Fritz Lang's Metropolis... Who else plans on getting it?

This reminds me of the scene from Men In Black: "Now I have to get the White Album again." :rommie:

Nevertheless, there's no way I'll pass this up. :bolian:

Glad to hear about the Huppertz score probably being included. It's good stuff.

As for the poor quality of the restored material, that's a shame, but at least it exists when it was believed to have been lost forever. Really, I never expected it to be recovered at all. So I won't be complaining.

I found the KINO trailer, which includes snippets of the newly found scenes and also answers the question whether it will contain the Huppertz score. (The answer is yes.)

I already have a DVD of this! Grrr

Not to single you out, but I don't get these complaints. The extra footage was only discovered two years ago (July 2008) and the completed version only premiered this past February. It's not like KINO intended to double dip when they originally released the film in 2005--at the time they thought that was all the material there was.

^Yeah: thanks - Don't think I would have thought of searching on YT for anything related to this edition myself!

A further note on the score: They did record at least some of the music for the missing passages (the complete score was around); and on the previous Kino DVD there is an example of an attempt to reconstruct a scene using fragmentary footage and some stills in addition to the music.

I just found out Metropolis will be playing here October 14th, and am almost shaking with excitement. I was content to wait for the disc to arrive, but to see this restored version of one of my favorite films for the first time on a massive screen. Magical.

The complaint is related to double dipping. Some of us hate doing that. Studios intention aside, it's annoying.

But still, you got to admit Metropolis is a special case, as this new version would have been impossible years ago. I don't get the complaints either.

Neither do I, it's not like this is raping my childhood by adding superfluous CGI effects to a classic -merely for financial gain.

:p

^^ That will be next. Right after they colorize it and dub in dialogue. :rommie:

100% agreed. As a lover of Silent Cinema, this is something I expect and generally have no problem with. Finding footage thought lost FOREVER and getting that back out to the masses is okay with me.

While I'm a little bummed that the footage doesn't match the rest of the film (and understand they did they best they could just to get it where it is) I'm still excited about getting a copy of this on DVD!

And pop music, you forgot pop music ;)

Modorer's Metropolis? Never happened. No sir.

Who the hell adds colour tinting to this film? Unlike many earlier silent German films (like Caligari and Nosferatu, for example), Metropolis was always intended to be in black and white!

And to have glorious, bombastic neo-Wagnerian scoring. But that goes without saying...

I wish it would play on the big screen here in Atlanta. Either way, I'll be picking up a copy. I can't wait.

http://www.kino.com/metropolis/playdates.html

It is playing in Atlanta, Oct. 1-7

It says more will be put on there. I know the Memphis screening scheduled for a week later (Oct. 14th) isn't on the Kino page yet.

I am pumped. Metropolis is fantastic. I'm watching the German version of the restoration on youtube now, and the new scenes are incredible, especially the new Yoshiwara footage.

The music is the original score, but it sounds different than the arrangement heard on the 2002 restoration. a newer recording I'm sure to account for the new footage and editing. It's much better.
