Fan Film Friday

Unfortunately, some financial problems soaked up all my time this week. We'll get back on schedule next week. Have a happy Independence Day!

Interesting. I looked at go animate when I first started thinking about doing my series. I liked how easy it looked to use, but the artstyle kinda turned me off. I like the work this fan has done though, very good use of go animates capabilities. I am impressed, good work.

Where might one view the film? All I see is an embedded trailer?

EDIT: Never mind -- found the link. My mistake.

EDIT #2: I've watched the film now and read your summary. The film itself is ok. It's a bit jarring seeing another actor trying to play David Tennant playing the Doctor, but the actor doing it has at least some skill as an actor, which goes a long way. If it had simply been some random guy trying to imitate Tennant, it would have been quite irritating.

My biggest complaint/critique would simply be that the film is much more leisurely paced and the score much more relaxed than the more frenetic and bombastic fare we get with the Davies/Moffat episodes. It would be interesting to find out whether that was an intentional choice by the filmmakers or just a by-product of being an amateur production.

As for your summary Randy, really my only question concerns the following paragraph:

On the other hand, some things are different in the universe constructed by Eldon Letkeman and Robert Westendorp than the continuity as first established by Russell T. Davies and continued by new head exec Steven Moffatt. (Don’t worry, it’s not much.)

What's the point of mentioning this if you don't elaborate on it? Whether abstractly or down to the nitty-gritty -- like noticing a superficial touch like mimicking Tennant's front cowlick -- that paragraph strikes me as rather pointless if you don't cite at least one thing to back your claim up.

Other than that, thanks for posting this ... I probably wouldn't have known about this fan film otherwise, and it was overall an enjoyable viewing.

Having watched a full season of Matt Smith's Doctor, I see that the professional TV folks are working hard to give Smith his own particular personality. I have to admit it's taking me much longer than usual to warm up to the new Doctor. Still, the stories have usually been imaginative and indeed pretty quickly paced. So far, so good.

But I do elaborate on it several paragraphs into the review:

>>With both the Doctor and Thoms alive and aware of the secret reason behind Victimsight, Smith reveals herself to be the Rani, one of the Doctor’s biggest enemies. (Yes, all the other Time Lords and Ladies are supposed to be dead as a result of the war between Gallifrey and the Daleks, but if the Master can figure a way out, then so could she.)<<

Glad you liked it. For the foreseeable future, I'm going to review at least one non-Trek fan effort per month. I've seen a Doctor Who fan episode that takes place right here (gulp) in the burbs of Baltimore, Maryland, and that group wants to be to Doctor Who what Phase II is to Star Trek. And I hear the first Firefly fan film with be out in the next month or so.

If anyone's got a favorite Trek or non-Trek fan film, let me know about it and send me a link. I'm at a bit of a disadvantage with other series since I know Trek so deeply. I saw something of a Lord of the Rings fan film, but I didn't know who was chasing who and why.

And I do try to review full stories if at all possible. If I'd posted a review so far on what I've seen of Exeter, I'd be hovering over the ending for years!

Better late than never, I guess. A computer glitch delayed the release of this week's Fan Film Friday. On the other hand, it's a two-fer with vignettes from Phase II and a team-up of the crews of the Intrepid and the Excelsior from Hidden Frontier.

Here's the link: http://scifipulse.net/?p=30071#more-30071

Enjoy and have a great weekend!

We made it to the end of the week yet again (thought sometimes I had my doubts). As a result, here's this week's Fan Film Friday, which for a change of pace pits the Dark Knight against the Clown Prince of Crime, and it looks like one of them doesn't make it out alive!

Here's the link to my review of Batman: "City of Scars:" http://scifipulse.net/?p=31246

Enjoy!

So you think you've seen everything possible done on an independent production? Then check out my review of Steam Trek: The Moving Picture, which shows what Trek might have been if it was produced in the 1920s, an era of black-and-white silent movies

Here's a link to my review: http://scifipulse.net/?p=31605. Enjoy and have a terrific weekend!

Well, life has gotten in the way of Trek again. Just as I started typing some things for FFF, I got the Blue Screen of Death, which rarely happens to me. So I got some things together to take to the county library and get some good use of all their magnificent computers.

Just as I touched the door knob, the phone rang. I know, I know. Don't answer it. Well, I did and it was someone whom I've done proofreading for 30 years. She asked if I wanted to work on the project she's doing.

"Does it pay?" I asked She replied: "Oh, yes."

I made it through the project, but way too late for me to yank something together for FFF. So I have an early start for next week's column instead.

Fan Film Friday: Star Trek: Encarta IV: ‘Dark Hope’ http://scifipulse.net/?p=32238

Thanks for the assist, Barb! Sometimes my schedule prevents me from putting up a post early in the day, and other times I don't have the link to the article the night before. But I try to do the "Upcoming" post first and then catch up with FFF later in the day.

Yes, this really is the (for now) final production by Star Trek: Encarta, with the interesting title of "Dark Hope." All the regular players are there, and if you liked the Voyager episode "Year of Hell," you'll be interested in this film, which keeps the changes and shows what happens after a mutiny on a Federation starship.

Well, we've made it through the summer, which unofficially ends on Labor Day Weekend. How about taking in a classic fan film that combines Star Wars and COPS to become a hilarious episode called TROOPS? If you're a fan of either series, you'll get a kick out of this oldie but goodie.

Just click here: http://scifipulse.net/?p=32608#more-32608

Enjoy! And have a great long weekend!

It's pretty nippy here in Maryland, so if you want to sit by the fire with something to enjoy, I recommend doing so with watching this week's offering: "The Wings of Icarus," the third episode by the crew of Star Trek: The Romulan wars, by clicking here: http://scifipulse.net/?p=33066#more-33066.

And as usual, enjoy!

Time for another round of Fan Film Friday. This week, we take a look at the new (and probably first) Firefly fan film. (I know, I know. Always avoid alliteration.) Some of the stars from Joss Whedon's beloved TV series and movie make cameo appearances so even if the production is new, it still contains old favorites.

Here's the link: http://scifipulse.net/?p=33374#more-33374

As always, enjoy!
