eBook Formats and Readers ?'s

Has anyone used a Kobo? I know it's not as high-functioning as a Kindle, but is it a good base reader?
As a base eReader the Kobo is great. It's very light weight and reasonably priced. One of the best things is the fact that it uses EPUB format. I get alot of my Star Trek ebooks directly from Simon and Schuster and the EPUB format is the only one they have.

I got myself one of the new Nooks today. I've only had it since about 1:00 this afternoon, and I already love it.

Not really anything bad. It responds quickly, the touch screen works well, and it's got a web browser, although it is a little slow to load more complex websites. I really like it, and I've already gotten more used out of it than the Ipod I got a few months back. I was torn between it and the Kindle, and I decided on it because I really like the fact that I can go to the stores for help and maintenance, instead of having to send it in to the Amazon people.

You might oughta check out your local library. If they have Overdrive you can borrow ebooks from your library for free. If not I believe it's the Philadelphia Public Library that accepts out of state membership for $15.00 a year. I've heard they have a real good selection of ebooks. One of the nice perks about owning a nook over a Kindle!

I'll have to look. Can you do it over the web or do you need to go to the physical library?

It's done on the web. If your library has a website they probably have an area for media downloads. You would need your library card number and a personal pin to download. Most libraries give two to three weeks on ebooks. You download them and use Adobe Digital Editions to open the file. Connect your nook and authorize your nook for ADE and the nook will show as a folder in ADE. You just drop and drag the ebook onto the nook. Then you unmount the nook and check for new content.

Cool. I checked the website after we talked and they do do it, but their selection sucks.

I'm waiting to see what Sony comes up with for their new readers before I decide if I want to upgrade or stick with what I have.

Has there been any news on what they are up to?

I would think the next piece of technology would be wireless and/or 3G since they'll need that to compete against Amazon & B&N in the upcoming holidays, unless they plan to stay out of the price war as they've previously suggested.

Rumor has it that the 6" model called the PRS-650 may have wifi and/or 3G. It will have a touch screen without a touch layer. It will have 2gig internal ram, a revised UI, will handle all the same formats, use the new Pearl screen, and have an attractive price. So if all this is true, I think it could be a winner.

^Certainly sounds like it, but there's nothing more than rumors floating around at this point. The next few months will certainly be interesting when it comes eBook Readers.

It should be announced early September and out by early October.

I have a second generation Kindle and am extremely happy with it as I can get just about everything Star Trek related.

Only the updated daily has any connectivity (still).

I just received the new kindle 3 in the mail. Wow. The contrast is amazing.

This is my first e-reader, but I've seen my dad's kindle 2 and my mom's nook. This is a huge improvement. The new page speed is great too. :techman:

That's good to hear as I really like my Kindle 2 but want to move to the new one.
