ITV are producing an adaptation of The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher

British actor Paddy Considine will star in a new Hat Trick Productions drama adaptation for UK terrestrial broadcaster ITV.

Considine (Dead Man's Shoes, Bourne Ultimatum, Red Riding Trilogy) will play 19th century police inspector Jonathan Whicher in The Suspicions of Mr Whicher (1x120'), based on a novel by Kate Summerscale.

Set in 1860 in a quiet English village and based on a true story, the story revolves around the murder of a three-year-old boy at the stately Rode Hill House. It's being shot on location around London in October, and BBC Worldwide is attached for international distribution.

Hat Trick's Mark Redhead is exec producing, with James Hawes (DCI Banks: Aftermath) directing. ITV's director of drama commissioning Laura Mackie and controller of drama commissioning Sally Haynes jointly ordered the feature.
I heard a lot of good things about the book, but didn't really get in to it when I tried reading it. So I guess I'll check this out.

Hmm, that's quite odd. I have read the book and it is quite interesting, but really not a lot actually happens, and Whicher never comes across as that interesting a detective (he basically assumes who is guilty then makes the facts fit the crime) I think it'll have to be very heavily reworked to work as a proper narrative.

It was a bit of a slog in places, but it really is more of a history book than an actual story.

I'm also in the group that started reading the book but never finished it. That's pretty rare for me, and I was in the middle of a phase where I read a lot of late 18th century true crimes as well.

I finished it. Interesting. Especially what happens to the family. But, meh, it didn't scream out ADAPT THIS. But, maybe.
