On a second viewing I love ds9

I fiRst watched ds9 as a kid in the uk wednesday nights on bbc2 and I found it boring.

Now I'm a lot older and I'm addicted, I watch 5 episodes a night!

It's become my favorite series, I love the continuing story unlike the more self contained styles of tng and vgr

I can see why a kid would find DS9 boring. You have to reach a certain level of consciousness before you can appreciate the complexities or even grasp what's going on.

Totally agree w/the hot Vorta. DS9 is more for adults who appreciate nuances of great acting + good FX+ nice space battles.

I didn't like DS9 right away, I saw a few episodes and wasn't fussed. I think I had caught some of the weaker episodes and it put me off. Plus a lot of the characters took a while to grow on me. After watching all of Voyager though I needed more Trek to watch so I gave DS9 another shot and loved it.

Eh, I was five when the show premiered and I rarely missed an episode its entire run. I didn't really grasp a lot of what was going on until the fifth season or so, though. At that point I began to feel for the characters a lot more, too, and when reruns would air, I was all over them like it was the first time.

I remember the first DS9 episode I watched was "In the hands of the Prophets" and I was like: WTF? :cardie: I didn't understand anything.

Later my friend started showing me best episodes, then I asked his for "Cardassian marathon", and now DS9 is equal to TNG for me: I love them both.

And "In the hands of the Prophets" is one of my favourite eps. But definitely not something I would choose as first experience with DS9, if introducing someone to DS9.

I am not English native speaking person. But I try to watch DS9 in English. English in DS9 is much easier then Original Series with James T. Kirk. I am fond of DS9. I am watch for 3-5 episodes per day. I was surprised how story could radicaly change. I am admire of ODO - cheif of security. I was worried about ODO when He have lost his shapeshifting abilities.

I am wondering how someone could think bad about DS9.

Well, Plantis, there's a phrase in English... 'different strokes for different folks.' As I believe you might not understand it, it means that people like separate things and that's just how it goes, you know?

Especially from the second season of DS9 onward, I love the show. The first season has some bumps and overly corny moments, but it still manages to remain steady and even has a few wonderful episodes. But I know that some people just don't like it for whatever reason. Oh well!

I knew what that was going to be before clicking it, which isn't surprising because I... well, because I live in Western society, that's why. But still, I laughed anyway and bobbed my head to it.

There's actually a song that illustrates this idea quite well:

Yeap, You were right. I didn't understand it. What should that video illustrate me?

Well, ya see, the world don't move... to the beat of just one drum.
What might be right for you, might not be right for some.

Your English is good- better than any of us could do in your language I bet!

Good to see some new fans in this thread. Especially fans outside the US, where the show did not enjoy nearly the exposure we had in the US during it's run, from what I have read.

Hope to see you all posting your thoughts in the forum as you make your way through the show. :)

And Plantis...I do not speak Ukrainian, but I do speak some Russian - lived in Moscow for a year back in the 90's. :) However, this board is English only...and even if it wasn't, I don't have the fonts or the ability to type in Russian! Still, good to see someone from Ukraine here! Glad to see DS9 is getting watched there!

My girlfriend and I have four more episodes of TNG to go before we get to the point where DS9 premiered and we commence watching that as well. I saw DS9 first-run when I was very young, but with few exceptions I haven't seen much of it since it ended.

I may decide to make my own personal thread dedicated to my experience, or I might post some musings here instead. I might do neither. I'm not sure!

We could *ahem* use another new viewer review thread. :)

One thing that makes me love DS9 so much is the fact that TNG came first and established the universe. DS9 then took that universe and twisted and turned it into something fascinating.

My favourite series is always the one I am watching at the moment (TNG) but DS9 is excellent. I have found that since having all the episodes of ST on DVD I appreciate the individual series much more than when I was restricted to one episode per week. You get a better feel for the series.

DS9 has some excellent storylines dealing serious issues such as religious problems and the futility of war to name a couple. It also has some brilliantly funny episodes.
