Return of the Jedi Deleted Scene...Luke building his lightsaber!

But it then begs the question of how could Luke complete his Jedi training without a lightsaber if he only built it just prior to rescuing Han? It's not like he could have borrowed Yoda's, since he lost his on Coruscant (and was too small for him anyway).

To me, it makes better sense if Luke had built his new lightsaber on Dagobah immediately after Episdoe V in order to continue his training with Yoda, and then went to Tatooine afterward to get Han from Jabba...

Or maybe he was just putting in two fresh C-size batteries in that scene.

Did Luke actually return to Dagobah between ESB and ROTJ though? He promises to return prior to leaving for Bespin and then there's the comment (iirc) in Jedi along the lines of having a promise to keep to and old friend as they leave Tatooine.

He didn't complete his training.

He just beat Vader on his second try.

Maybe Yoda had spares.
That just raises more questions. Why would Luke wait until he reached Tatooine to build his own if he had access to one on Dagobah? Couldn't he have simply built it there with a working model to compare it to?

Then it means that Luke completed his Jedi training on his own without Yoda--and apparently without a lightsaber as well with the deleted scene in place.

So Obi-Wan and Yoda were just being worry warts over him leaving Dagobah...

He already knew how to swing a lightsaber. His Jedi training on Dagobah as depicted in TESB didn't even utilize his lightsaber -- except for the "cave", and he was advised not to bring his weapons in there anyway.

Yeah, so his training was essentially complete when he left Dagobah after all.

His training might have been complete in terms of the actual training.. but Yoda knew he wasn't ready to apply what he had learned. He hadn't gotten over his impatience. That was, uh, the whole point of the story.

But when he returns to Yoda in ROTJ Yoda says "no more training do you require", which always implied to me that he was visiting him between the movies and learning more.

I always thought Luke spent a year or so on Dagobah to complete his training, while Lando and the others tried to evade the Empire and find Han and make up a plan to infiltrate his palace.
And, you know, you can practice sword fighting without a real blade.

I thought it interesting that Luke dressed entirely in black for the film...quite the different costume for a Jedi not to mention that Luke had primarily worn white in the previous two films.

Actually, he wore white in ANH, gray in TESB and black in ROTJ.

This (emphasis mine).

I always thought that Luke had received additional training between Episodes V and Episode VI as well and that rescuing Han from Jabba was a second break in his training. His reference to "keeping a promise to an old friend" was in regards to still completing his training with Yoda even after this.

Depending on what chronology you subscribe to, anywhere from six months to a year passed between Episodes V and Episode VI, IMO...

I always thought Luke had never returned to Dagobah, that facing Vader was his final challenge, and anything he needed to learn he would learn on his own on his personal journey of self discovery. Like Yoda had taught him all the mechanics of everything, and now he just needed experience.

This is why I don't like a lot of the EU that filled/fills in the gap between ESB and RotJ. My personal take at the time I saw RotJ, as that the heroes had been seperated for a while. Basically Luke went off to do whatever he needed to do while Leia and Lando and Co. tracked down Han and worked on a way to get to him. For some reason (mind you, I was 10 when I saw RotJ) I had the feeling that Luke hadn't hooked back up with the old gang till right before the movie.

Still, today, it seems to make sense to me. Luke gets his ass kicked in ESB, gets a bombshell dropped on him about Vader and his father, and basically sets out to "find himself" and learn as much as he can about the force and bulk up for round two with Vader.

As for his saber: I took from Vader's line that's building a their saber was sort of a big deal for a Jedi.

Granted this was before there really was such as thing as the EU.

I thought he might've, too, but the only real question is, why would he have waited to ask Yoda or Obi-Wan about Vader being his father until Yoda was on his deathbed?

Denial/afraid that it was true. Easier to pass it off as a lie if he doesn't here the truth.

Or he believed it and was trying to get his head around it and figure where to go from there, figure out who to trust. After all it wasn't just Vader revealing the truth, but the reveal that Obi-Wan and Yoda had lied to him and used to him.

Oh yeah I forgot about asking Yoda if Vader was his father. That does imply they didn't meet in between movies. That, or he kept asking over and over and Yoda kept dodging the question.

I never thought about it before, but it DOES seem a bit odd that never once does anyone actually teach Luke how to use a lightsaber. Especially considering it's, you know, the signature weapon of the Jedi and all.

Sure, there's that scene on the Falcon with the ball, but that had more to do with using the Force than any actual swordfighting techniques.

Speaking of costumes, I feel like an idiot for admitting this... but all this time I thought Leia was just wearing some generic white gown at the end of ESB (that she got on the hospital ship or something). I only JUST realized when watching the movie again last weekend that it's the same princess costume she wore in the first movie.

I guess without the buns on the side of her head, I never made the connection. lol

We just don't see it, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen. We've also never seen Luke taking instructions on how to fly the X-Wing or Snowspeeder. Nor did we see Obi-Wan teaching Luke how to use the force to move objects.
