Dinner For Schmucks

I went to see this last night with my girlfriend and have come to warn you: avoid it! A lot of critics have been praising this movie and for the life of me I can't understand why.

Paul Rudd is good as the lead, but I'd be interested to see what he could do with a real meaty dramatic script.

It's hard to see Ron Livingston as an evil exec after being so anti establishment in Office Space.

Steve Carell is making a career out of playing idiots from Brick to Michael Scott to this movie's Barry. The shtick was funny the first time in Anchorman, even into 40-Year Old Virgin. But I am amazed that he can continue to make a career playing characters that are one Big Mac short of a Happy Meal.

Speaking of shtick, how many more of these movies are we going to be subjected to, where the jokes are focused around reaching into a zebra's vagina as it's giving birth? Comedy can be done well, so can a movie like this, but unfortunately you will find neither here.

I'm going to see it next saturday (oddly, with my friend who's coming down to visit from Toronto, seeing your logo there! ;))

I love Steve Carrell and am not yet tired of that character (and the trailers pretty much warn/tell us what type of character he's playing, so...)

Plus Jemaine Clemente. No way I'm not seeing this.

I sort of want to see this, because Carell is good, but more importantly, because I loved the original french film it's based on, and have been wanted to see how terribly it'd be screwed up ever since I first heard about the american remake five years ago, back when Sasha Baron Cohen was slated for the Carell part.

Either way, though, I highly, highly recommend Le Dîner de Cons/The Dinner Game. "I don't have a sister."

I'm veeeeeeery curious about the rendition of that part. I laughed so hard that I almost passed out lacking air...

I thought it was funny, but no where nearly as funny as I love You Man or Forgetting Sarah Marshall and The Hangover beats all of them. It just seemed like they could have done more. The trailer gave away the movie too much. All in all i'd give it a C.
