Superhero casting that almost was.

Well Affleck kind of got to play Superman by portraying George Reeves in "Hollywoodland", right? Where's that picture of him in Superman garb from?

^
I found it on google by searching Ben Affleck as Superman or either it was Hollywoodland.

This project never seemed to go beyond wishful thinking but several years later Wolfgang Peterson was linked to another BvS project. While most young Hollywood actors seemed to be up for both roles, it was at one stage stated that Colin Farrell would be Batman and Jude Law Superman (Law had also been linked to the JJ Abrams abortive project).

As I recall, Christian Bale was rumored to be a top contender for Batman even back then. Meanwhile, Jude Law wouldn't do Superman because Warner Bros. wouldn't give him script approval on the sequels.

Originally on Daredevil, they were looking at Colin Farrell as Matt Murdock and Ben Affleck as Bullseye before going the other way around.

Annette Benning was going to be Catwoman in Batman Returns but she got pregnant.

Back in the 80s I remember rumors of Tom Cruise being cast as Peter Parker for a Cannon Films production of Spider-Man.

Actually I also remember that Entertainment Tonight ran a story in the early 90s (I think it was winter 92 or spring of 03) that Cruise had been signed for a James Cameron directed version of Spider-Man and that Arnold was in talks for Doc Ock. It didn't get made due to money issues.

I think Bale was a top contender along with Farrell. When a reporter confronted Bale about the rumor, he said at the time "It's Bateman, not Batman". Bale was also a contender for Superman, at least according to a semi-recently interview with Wolfgang Petersen about the now defunct film.

Annette Benning was going to be Catwoman in Batman Returns but she got pregnant.

Sean Young also famously vied for the role of Catwoman in Batman Returns. She even went as far as appearing on TV as Catwoman practically pleading for the role and allegedly stormed on the WB lot looking for Burton, who apparently hid under his desk until security removed Young from the premises.

Casting Nicholas Cage as Superman is the worst idea in the long, sad, history of bad ideas.

Poor Burton.

^It would also have added a whole new dynamic to the Batman/ Joker relationship, given Brokeback Mountain.

And then he'd have to kiss his sister in the sequel:eek:

Christian Bale auditioned for Robin in Forever but lost that role. Poor him.

The moment Bale saw the costume he probably would said "Fuck this!"

Didn't I hear Jack Black was initially asked to play Green Lantern?

When summoned by the guardians(who looked like muppets) Jack Black was apparently going to do a song and dance routine..

Additionally, Young was up for the part of Vicki Vale in the first film. She actually got the part, but due to an injury while horseback riding, they had to give the role to someone else.

What a strange career she's had. I only know her as the chick from "Blade Runner" and *SPOILER ALERT*....

The guy who got a sex change operation in "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective". :p

I heard Bill Murray was considered for the role of Batman. Even after seeing how well he could play a serious character in "Lost in Translation" and seeing a skinny actor Michael Keaton (previously best known for comedy) do a good job as Batman, I still think that would have been weird.

Yeah, I think Keaton was brilliant in the role. He didn't need to do a crazy angry voice. When he told that crook "I'm Batman", you can hear the threat crazed man underneath. As Wayne, I love how lost he looked in his own mansion in every scene. It wasn't really his money after all, it was his parents'.

Worth pointing out that Finkle didn't get a "sex-change operation" just breast implants. He still had the meat and two veg.

He also did the "silent batman" part real well

Batman: What do you want?
The Penguin: Ah, the direct approach. I admire that in a man with a mask.
[laughs, then turns serious]
The Penguin: You don't really think you'll win, do you?
Batman: Things change.
Alfred: Why are you still out? Are you concerned about that strange, heroic Penguin person?
Batman: I think he knows who his parents are. There's something else.

Compared to Keaton's bruce wayne who was bumbling/serious/

She actually started work on Batman and the horseback riding injury was incurred during filming. There was going to be a scene where Bruce Wayne and Vicki Vale go horseback riding on the grounds of Wayne Manor.

I'm sure this was mentioned before but I really wanted to say that the idea of Jack Black as Green Lantern would've been one of the all time disasters in the history of casting. I really love the Green Lantern concept and he would've ruined the chance for more people to be exposed to it if they had opted to go that way. It would've almost as bad as Nicholas Cage as Superman. Now cast Black as G'nort and that would work.
