SGA - Carson Beckett dead?

after watching all of sg1 it took some time to get used to atlantis, and to develope a liking, but starting with 1th season's home, the storm and the eye i have been hooked. just watched sunday from the third season, what a beautiful, well written and played, and melancholic episode.
carson beckett died. some main character is usually marked for death, but i would never have imagined it would hit my favourite. impatiently i looked up if he'll come back, and learned he is to be resurrected as clone in season 4. the outrage of the fans was to great. i join them somewhat delayed.
 
While that episode was indeed a great episode, it was a huge mistake to kill off Beckett, of all the people that needed to go, he was not it. They like to do this, thinking they needed to shake things up, but often they have been wrong with their decisions and are missing the point. Ford, eh, didn't really care, but Beckett, man, what a horrible move. If anyone, Weir needed to die IMO.
 
It's alway tricky - I'd have preferred it if his death episode hadn't been quite so obvious but I'm actually more of a fan of 'sudden' deaths like Tasha in TNG, or Janet in SG1.

I prefer the characters to have a journey, which isn't always possible in episodic tv. I certainly wanted Ford's story to have some kind of resolution. Carson's replacement grows on you after a bit though and had a nice plot arc.

P.S. I still think McGilion would make a better Scotty. Pegg's portrayal, much as I love the guy normally, was too much of a buffoon.

I don't think Pegg's portrayal was the problem, the character was written as a completely different character than Scotty in TOS.

Scotty in TOS was actually a very serious character who happened to have comedic moments. Trek XI presented the character entirely for comedy relief.

If they were doing a Scotty in the TOS mold for Trek XI, than McGillion would have been perfect. But seeing as how they gave us a completely different character who only shared the name and heritage of the original character, then another actor is fine.
 
Well Brent you didn't need to wait long for Weir to go after Carson

At the time I was like :eek: but the more I think about it I feel too many tv shows are too safe for the main cast only dying in season finales normally or you can clearly see it coming. He was a great character but It was a very Lost esq move by the writers who sadly buckled and brought him back in a way in season 4 & 5.

I hope SG-U in the future will cull cast members and really make that show feel unpredictable. Sometimes a non epic death is right (expect in Trip TATV death :rolleyes:) and it just doesn't bother me too much anymore that Carson went bye bye.
 
It wasn't a mistake to kill of Beckett, I don't think. "Sunday" handles his death brilliantly. Further episodes, alas, do not. There should be a gaping hole for the remainder of season three, but there isn't. Apparently, everyone got over their close friend and colleague dying in a jiffy. It doesn't help that his replacement is, for most of her run, rather unbelievably young for the role she's fulfilling (and, for much of season four, annoying).

And, when they bring him back and the principals treat the clone of Carson as if he's actually Carson...well, I'd be more angry if the character (in any iteration) wasn't so much fun.

Maybe it was a mistake to kill him off. Though, in a perfect world, he would have died (and stayed dead) and the writers would have handled the after effects in remaining episodes as well as they did in "Sunday." But SGA was never a show that pleased me for very long, so that doesn't come as a surprise.
 
Since they brought him back in Season 4, it seems like they would have been better served to kill off Weir in this episode.
 
Death has very little meaning in sci-fi television. They kill someone off and bring them back at the samp of their fingers. Yawn.
 
What bug me about Carson death was how everyone just moved on.
You have a Scientist Mckay, whose gone from working in labs to being surrounded by people dying on him like Gall ,Abrams,Peter and Carson yet he carries on like nothing is wrong.
 
What bugged me is that due to shoddy scheduling and fan whining, I found out Carson would be revived three weeks before they aired the episode where he died in the U.S.

I too knew Beckett was coming back before I saw him die. I thought the bit I read about him coming back and the way it would happen was stupid fan conjecture. Then it actually happened. It didn't bother me that much, but I've always liked Beckett more than Keller, though she did grow on me.

Tell that to poor old Doc Fraiser :(

I think the typical SCI FI way of bringing back dead characters came from the writers caving into fan demands to want to see there characters come back refusing to believe anything else other than there invincible characters who should never die. Some is just bad writing but man SCI FI fans are brutal when we lose major characters :lol:

Sunday does handle the emotional impact of it well. But really, exploding tumors? That's a waste of a perfectly good character death.

Everyone hated Carson's death because, well, he was killed by an exploding tumor. It would have been more dignified to have him eaten by a killer tomato.

People expect heroic protagonists to have heroic deaths. Janet had a heroic death. Carson's death was just stupid.
 
^Agreed. Should've been killed saving the city from a Wraith attack or something. I forget...where did the exploding tumors even come from?

Two scientist switched on a machine when they were exploring a lab on their own in the middle of the night, because everyone had forgotten what happened in hot zone.:lol:

Exploding tumors sound daft but think about the technology really and the ability to make your enemies turn into bombs to kill them and there own troops is utterly brilliant. Remidns me of Doctor Who and Davros creates a weapon to wipe out all life from The Universe and then calls it the Reality bomb :rolleyes:

bad names but brilliant OTT tech.
