Cumberbatch hints at 'Doctor Who' role

BTW B, that avatar is getting old. Can I make you a new one or something?

BTW: his mother, Wanda Ventham, was in three Who stories during the 60s-80s (Faceless Ones, Image of the Fendahl and Time & the Rani).

The more I see and hear about Cumberbatch the more I think he would be the safe choice/obvious choice for the 12 doctor.

The next Master perhaps?
I would really like to see Jekyll's James Nesbitt as the Moffat-era Master.

I'm not sure, but I think this could be the first time that the words "safe" and "obvious" were attached to "choice" when it comes to casting the Doctor! :)

Pertwee, Davison, and Tennant may have been the closest to safe -- all were well-established, and in Davison's case he was a "name" actor -- but no one was ever "obvious." There was nothing safe or obvious in casting Troughton; no one really knew if recasting the lead was going to work. Tom Baker was an unknown. Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy were certainly left-field choices. Paul McGann was, at the time, a bit of an odd choice, and Christopher Eccleston, despite his stature, was taking a huge risk on the series.

If Cumberbatch is both obvious and safe, that's perhaps the biggest reason not to cast him when Smith leaves.

It does occur to me that if Cumberbatch is hinting at something now -- and the role in mind is not the Master -- then it's possible that the rumors of Matt Smith leaving at the end of season six are true.

Let you make me one? No. Someone else, maybe. I've had Ocett for quite a while though; I imagine my legions of fans here would find a change hard to get used to.

Karen Gillan confirmed the other day that the rumours are nonsense. I'm presuming she'd know. Besides, replacing odd-looking, wonderful, convincingly alien Matt Smith with Cumberbatch would be a big step backwards in my view.

In my humble opinion, Smith is easily the best of the new series docs, and if he keeps going, probably the best since Tom. I hope he is around for a long time...

 Are you certain? I can think of a few perfect ones for you...

No, seriously, if you like that chick why don't you switch to the actual actress? I doubt she has that many scales in real life...

It's not about the actress, it's the character. I'm not sure I can remember the actress' name even, and nor would I recognise her.

As for James Nesbitt, whatever happened to him? He was flavour of the month once, back when he was doing those Yellow Pages adverts. Last I saw of him was in the paper a year ago about how he was going bald. Personally, I never really saw the fuss about him. He's a reasonable comic actor, but the Radio Timesish media set used to talk about him like he's the greatest thing ever. I can't imagine what he'd bring to role of the Master, beyond a camp pantomine that would make Eric Roberts look subtle.

Hmm, well he's in the Deep on BBC1 a week on Tuesday actually :)

As for Cumberbatch...after seeing Sherlock tonight (brilliant, Moffat's a fucking genius) I'd have to say he'd be way too obvious as the Doctor.

But also after watching Sherlock I'm going to suggest someone I never ever thought I would. Martin Freeman...

That's sad, dude. The woman is obviously hot behind that mask (or used to be).

And what is that character from? DS9?

Did you catch Moffat's Jekyll? He was incredible in it. LOVED him! He would make a decidedly sinister Master, if they so let him... :techman:

^ He looks the part there, I kept meaning to watch Jekyll. Some people want a more posh british uptight Master where I prefer the crazy Simm kind though prob tone him down a little bit if brought back but not too much.

Hey we could have Gene Hunt as The Master  now kids that would care you.

It's Gul Ocett from TNG episode The Chase. I just picked her because the Cardies are my favourite race, she's one of the best, and...well this is a Star Trek forum.

I didn't see it, though it'd have to be a terrific performance for me to take that bottom pic seriously. Wasn't that the show which shattered the Paterson Joseph myth?

For the role of the Doctor? No, no, no, no!!

I couldn't even accept him as Arthur Dent, I certainly can't contemplate (the slightest thought of the merest possibility..) of him as the Doctor.

A terrific performance. It was my first encounter with the actor, save a brief brush with some drama they were airing on A&E called "Cold Feet". I really dug him, his acting, and his performance. I think he would be a spectacular Master. :techman:

And yes, Patterson Joseph was a bit shit...

I've just watched Sherlock. Amazingly well-done and better in many ways than Doctor Who. Shortly after the show started, I found myself looking for a police box in the background. I never spotted one, but I'm now ready to submit my guess about Cumberbatch's role in the Doctor Who episodes ... he'll be playing Sherlock Holmes.

PJ was rubbish in it, mostly down to the American accent he was using (not sure if it was his decision or not) but I don't see how this shatters any myth? Patterson would have made a good Doctor Who, that he was miscast in one role doesn't change that.

And Jekyll was very good, frankly though I suspect you wouldn't like it...
