Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Teaser

Captain Jack Sparrow crosses paths with a woman from his past (Penelope Cruz), and he's not sure if it's love--or if she's a ruthless con artist who's using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne's Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn't know who to fear more: Blackbeard or the woman from his past.
—Disney's official press release

That's the official summary for those that are wondering.

I hope you bought 2 of each...1 to eat and the other to collect...secure in it's unopened package. ;)

I have an Eeyore & Garfield Pez I got like 8 years ago...unopened. :)

I'm really tempted to do that. The toys are nice.

How is this even a teaser? It's just Johnny as Captain Jack talking about the movie fourth wall directly to the audience at comic con. A teaser is something that might show something from the actual movie. Quite frankly they should have stopped making these films after the first movie. I enjoyed the first film and I enjoyed Depp's performance in it. The second was okay and I refuse to watch the third and have no interest in this fourth movie.

I'm just glad they're only doing one movie this time. I liked the two sequels, but they were hideously bloated, and didn't have a story worth stretching across two movies.

Something I've been thinking about.

We have POTC4 coming out next year, but where are the other pirate movies? It's been seven years since the first POTC, but there haven't been other big budget pirate movies that have been released with the exception of this franchise. Studios still don't want to take a chance with this genre. That's a shame.

Agreed.

Disagree.:techman:

The first Pirates film was amazing. A breath of fresh air and a total success against all odds. It was a wonderful film made all the better by Depp's charisma and talent.

The other two, without Depp, would be considered bloated, boring Bay-gasms. They're really terrible movies. When you can remove an entire act from a film without any effect on its plot, that's some seriously shitty filmmaking.

Re: Pirate of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Teaser

The book by Tim Powers was great. I hope some of it survives being turned into a PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN movie.

Agreed, I greatly enjoyed the novel. It'll be interesting to see how much McShane's Blackbeard is similar to the Blackbeard in the book.

Or to the real, historical Blackbeard, for that matter.

Sadly, they only bought the book *after* the script was done because they discovered it had enough similar concepts (as well a cool title) that it might look iffy if they didn't.

So... But who knows, they might have added some cool stuff in later drafts.

As for the teaser... Reminds me of the Dr Who season trailers Tom Baker did for a couple of his seasons, when he would be the character addressing the audience.

I'm trying to think of good fourth installments and none spring to mind.

Thunderball
Goblet Of Fire
The Voyage Home
Live Free Or Die Hard
Mothra Vs Godzilla isn't a bad entry in the series...

Mind you, I think Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is better than Last Crusade and probably better than Temple of Doom...

I'm more just hoping that it restores things by going back to the tone of the original surprise hit, than the sequels.

It's a bugbear of mine when studios have a surprise hit and say "oh, it was actually just the first part of a planned trilogy and we'll be doing two bloated sequels back to back" - rather than just calmly working out what worked about the original and keeping that fresh for another movie.

This is a common practice at Comic Con. If an actor or director can't be there in person, they often will address the audience via a taped greeting. The director Peter Jackson has done this many times, for example. For Depp to do so simply follows suit. And it is a teaser, one directed exclusively to the fans at Comic Con.

They do the same thing at the MTV Movie Awards. If a celebrity can't be there to accept the award in person, there's a videotaped segment from the set of their new movie . . . .

Who knows? Depp may have just been in costume, get ready for his next scene, when it came time to tape his greeting so he figured, what the hell, let's do it in characterl

"Hey, Johnny, got a minute? We need to do this thing for Comic-Con . . . ."

IT teases that there is a new movie, but it doesn't really tease the movie itself. As much as I didn't much care for the second and third PotC movies, I can't deny that Jack Sparrow is an enthralling character or that I am very interesting in seeing more.

This is about where I am as well.
Can't say I'll be there opening day/weekend but if the previews look good and I'm impressed with what I see along the way I may go. I do own all 3 but rarely watch the last 2. The series just fell apart structure wise as it advanced by breaking its own internal rules/codes as it went from CotBP.

Thunderball

Didn't like it.

Goblet Of Fire

Really over-the-top and over-acted. I mean, the series really evolved with Prisoner of Azkaban, with Cuaron escalating things nicely. The kids finally gave decent performances. Then things went downhill with Goblet of Fire. It certainly has its moments, but it's way too over-the-top for my tastes.

The Voyage Home

Already covered my thoughts on this movie, but, since it is seemingly liked by many -- and commonly considered a success -- I guess I'll give you this one... ;)

Live Free Or Die Hard

Not even as good as Die Hard With a Vengeance.

Mothra Vs Godzilla isn't a bad entry in the series...

Never saw it.

I happen to agree with T'Baio that the first entry in the Pirates series was great but the sequels were pretty bad. I think -- as he mentioned -- without the presence of Depp they would have really suffered. Depp's charisma, as bright and fun as it might be, could not carry the last two films in my mind and I don't think it'll be enough to carry this newest one, but we'll see.

I'm a Voyage Home fan as well...it was one of the first Star Trek movies I ever saw from the original series, I think I saw Wrath of Khan after that. I see JacksonArcher's point though those films with perhaps the except of Goblet of Fire and the Voyage Home didn't really have great box office intakes I believe. Unfortunately I think On Stranger Tides will have a decent outing.

Prisoner of Azkaban is my favorite Potter movie. It's the only movie from the series that I've rewatched more than once. I really wish that Cuaron had taken over as the director for the entire series!

Agreed. I was hoping he would direct Deathly Hallows but alas. John Williams also delivered the best score for the series too with that movie.
