MLB Talk - 2010 Season

Chip Caray gets excited every time a ball is hit in the outfield.

THAT BALL IS GOING GOING GOING... INTO Jeff Francoeur's glove to end the inning... :(

Okay, NOW I get the picture.

From what I hear about these guys and what I know of the Giants' broadcast crew (Miller, Flemming, Kruk, and Kuip), I think the Giants got it just right between objectivity and homerism. Though it chafes me when they deem the "Drive of the game" or the defensive highlight of the game to have come from the opponent (and a little superstition says that when they do, the Giants wont win the game), it's the right call in the case of a Giants loss.

Maybe it's a bit of Sox-tinted glasses on my part, and someone that follows another team can chime in, but I feel that the Red Sox crew (Jerry Remy and Don Orsillo) are a pretty strong team, and that they try to be not blatant homers. I mean, you're catering to your audience, but I don't think they go too overboard on that account. Know Orsillo has been hired by the TBS guys the past couple of seasons to call postseason games (not Sox games), and his calls there seem to be pretty similar to what we get during the season. Of course, listening to Don and Jerry when they're obviously bored with a game is pretty high comedy, but not really part of the discussion...
Oh my God, I love listening to Don and Jerry when the game's a blowout or just really, really slow. So frakking funny.

That reminds me of one of the Red Sox's former radio commentators, Jerry Trupiano. He used to freak out every time there was a flyball. "SWING AND A DRIVE! THERE IT GOES! WAY BACK! WAY BACK! ...And caught by the center fielder." :vulcan:

Define "homers" in this context, my inferred definition is foggy at best.

Blatant favoritism of the home team?

Yes, and I was under the impression that's what most people want to hear.

Right. Any team's fans will excuse even the most blatant homer-ism - as long as it's by their own broadcasters.... When we listen to the radio or watch TV, we want to hear a cheering section.

Lack of class on the part of the Royals' broadcast crew aside, be thankful that you had broadcast and television set with which to watch the ballgame.

Moving along, I cant believe the changes in the NL west since the early 2000's. those 4 or so years, when I avidly watched baseball, top of the heap were Arizona, Dodgers. and Giants; backwaters were Colorado and San Diego. Now, when picking it up again, Arizona has switched places with both of the backwater teams.

After listening to Suzyn "of all the dramatic things" Waldman, "an A-bomb from A-Rod", and the douchebag songs Sterling starts singing like "the Grandy-man can" after granderson hit a homerun to win a game? Or how UNFAIR it was when the bugs were on Joba in Cleveland in the playoffs, and how that was entirely the reason, even though the OTHER team had to pitch in the same conditions?

It's a Thrilla...from Godzilla! Robbie Cano...whadaya know! The Giambino!

Ugh.

It is high, it is far, it is....er, uh...caught in short left field.

What a windbag.

Arizona has also completly changed ownership and fired at least three managers, although I do have to give them credit for dumping Hinch. He should never have been hired in the first place. At least Gibson is showing that he has a clue about how to motivate and train his players.

^ I had to watch that whole fucking game with the Royals broadcasters. Have those people ever heard of being objective?

It's the Royals; they have to give the fans some hope.

I do like this one thing they said though. "Most teams rebuild...the Yankees reload." :techman:

You can't really say that you don't think a Top Ten Hated Red Sox poll on YES wouldn't be funny?

Actually, yes, I can. And, IMHO, it would not be funny.

Billy Wagner is giving me heart attacks more and more often when he comes in to close. He just blew another one. :klingon:

I hope he gets it more together before the playoffs, should the Braves make it.

Mets defense is right with it tonight! Now if only Jason Bay can stop getting his ass kicked by Dodger Stadium...poor guy faceplants into the wall, then on another play flips over into the left field stands...

Here's hoping they can also give Santana some RUN support, finally.

Speak for yourself.

Chip Caray's seven-year reign of terror in the Cubs' broadcast booth was sheer torture, and I (and many others) were so elated at his departure in 2004 that there was fornicating in the streets. Much like Joe Buck, talk about a guy who has a job solely because of who his sperm donor was.

There's a difference between being a raging homer, like Caray, Michael Kay (

) or Hawk Harrelson, all three of whom I absolutely cannot stand due to their utterly shameless fellating of their team and denigrating the opposition, and merely having a positive slant for the team, like the Cubs' Len Kasper, the Orioles' Gary Thorne, or Cincinnati's Marty Brennaman (his son can go suck a tailpipe, though).

I'm constantly waiting for Chip Caray to say one more idiotic thing so Joe Simpson can beat him to a pulp on air.

Billy Wagner is just tired. He's already pitched in 54 games. He needs a week off.

While Kay can be described as fellating the yankees ( I love that term) he rarely, if ever, denigrates the opponents. For example, when the Sox were in their slump in the beginning of the season, he flat out said that they weren't an under 500 team and that they will improve. That isn't exactly something a hater would say

^ Exactly. For all the cheering he does for the Yanks, I have *never* heard Michael Kay say one unkind word about the opposition.

I always liked Thorne when he called the Mets for some years. Not familiar with Kasper, does he have to work with Santo? That guy is the worst homer of all. Actually, he's just a screaming, raving, asshole.

No, Kasper calls the Cubs on television with Bob Brenly. Really, really great team.

Ron Santo's just lost it, though. It's a shame that he's dragging down Pat Hughes, who is one of the best play-by-play announcers in the game and instead spends his time babysitting Santo.

Marlins had to have a Diddy concert to try and fill the seats today. Something tells me they ended up losing money. Diddy throws out the first pitch with a hooker entourage, apparently.

Also, Nate McLouth is a piece of shit. He makes more money than our #3-5 pitchers and two top RBI producers... TOGETHER. Go figure. Then, add all of this salary + Kenshin Kawakami's to get that of Derek Lowe's. Ridiculous.

Brooks Conrad hit his 2nd pinch hit grand slam of the season today. He has 20 RBIs in 79 AB's. He doesn't get to play every day because of Chipper Jones. Not cool.
