Has anyone here tried to redesigned ENT-D

I have been noticing trend were users are frequently critiques Enterprise Galaxy class as ugly and most off them names their complains that the saucer is too heavy. Personally i agree in that apartment especially i feel the saucer is just too wide. Also many says that the nacelles are just too short rather critique the actual nacelles design itself.. So my question is has anyone talented user here tried to designed fan-art Enterprise D were those issues are fixed because overall the Galaxy class isent all bad but need some work ironing out the too heavy saucer and the short nacelles.

While the Sovvy has grown on me over the years there's just no way of beating the graceful lines of Andrew Probert's masterpiece.

Even after all these years seeing the Sovereign next to her still brings the words "trash compactor" to mind.

i like the Enterprise D design myself BUT im not oppsed to seeing a redesign to be set in Prime Trek or NuTrek :)

I remember when I first saw pictures of the new Enterprise, I was shocked. It looked very odd, very brightly coloured and with lots of glowing bits. After seeing it in action in the first few episodes however, it was like it had always been that way and was exactly right. I cant say for sure it's my favourite big E, the movie era 1701 is still an amazing looking model, but it's damn close.

I think Probert is still coming up with new ideas with his new app, but they remind me more of his ambassador class.

Over at www.federationreference.com , folks are trying to bring the earlier -D art to life:

Daks Allegiance class is a great mix of the -D and the Sovie.' (Bitter Homecoming)

indeed the Allegiance class is a good'n :) :techman:

The only update needed would be to install a third nacelle AGT style, that will instantly remedy the front heavyness and make for an interesting ship, the big cannon etc aren't needed.

you know you have me intrigued, I think I will take a shot at this. Mr. Probert please forgive me now if it is a total failure :)

The Galaxy class was a great design. Every part of it complimented each other. The nacelles were in proportion. The saucer was big yes. But thats to house the families. The drive section is equally big. The only thing i would change would be for warp engines internally in the saucer section for separating. The nebula class is a redesign of the Galaxy and looks even better in my opinion.

I really hate the third nacelle concept. I dont see that improving the Galaxy class design. Also for the record i hate the nebula class.
Really the galaxy class is a good design but my problem is the the saucer. It is so freaking big. Perhaps downsized the saucer by 10-15% would be ideal.

I've often wondered what Galaxy would look like if the disk was only as wide as the saucer's lower phaser strip. The neck would have to be modified just a bit perhaps.

I actually saw a beautiful redesign back in the day (around the time of season 1) that, basically, widened the drive section so that the total width, including the nacelles, was equal to the width of the saucer. The artist also extended the length of the nacelles, but couldn't decide whether he liked them better that way. I did. He also redesigned the deflector dish to make it more, well, TMPish. It was a gorgeous design.

He also did a design that extended the nacelles, but otherwise kept the drive section as it was. However, he changed the geometry of the saucer to make it long and narrow rather than short and fat. It looked great, too.

Wish I had copies.

I've never been a fan of the "Stretched Limo" look.

TBH, I never found anything wrong with the Ent-D, but then again I grew up on TNG, so I wasn't mentally locked into the TOS ship as THE blueprint for all other Trek designs.

The Ent-D looked imbalanced to some TOS purists, the NuEnt looks imbalanced to some TOS-TNG-DS9-VOY-ENT fans.

I guess someone could try to redesign the Ent-D,which would be interesting to see, but this thread is full of... adjustments.

^Not sure about that first one, but the second design you describe is about halfway down on this page:

http://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/lcars/starfleet-prototype.php

The U.S.S. Frontier on that page.

The Frontier would have been a nice E-E... I never really liked the movie one. Though I really liked the E-D, so I'm biased.

The Crusader there looks very much like one of the Next Class Starship designs in the TNG Tech manual.
