Deadliest Catch - Season 6

Well you're more generous than me, I haven't seen anything out of him during this whole season, and during After the Catch that didn't scream dickhead to me. Of course IMHO, Keith on Wizard isn't much better.

You know I'm sure the pressure of the job does bring out the worst in these guys. Certainly Sig is an asshole at times too, but somehow he still manages to be a likeable guy, and interesting to watch. Bill, and to a lesser extent Keith, are just assholes for the sake of being assholes as far as I can tell.

Deadliest Catch is fabulous show, I had watched their season 4, which is very nice. But I have not seen the season 5. Can it is possible to watch deadliest catch season 5. Plz tell me.

Of course IMHO, Keith on Wizard isn't much better.

A friend of mine who lives in Seattle went to a book signing for Deadliest Catch: Desperate Hours last year, at which a few of the captains (Sig Hansen, Phil Harris and the Hillstrands, as I recall) appeared, and when he got to Phil, he said to him, "I'll pay you a hundred bucks to punch Keith right in the face."

According to my friend, Phil just chuckled and said, "You wouldn't have to pay me."

By chance have you posted this story before? Because I remember reading this story before and I've actually been looking for the quote.

You see at times, Keith calms down and seems okay, so I think that yeah the boat brings out the worst in him. Like last night he goes down and chews out the guys because they were celebrating that they got one really good pot up. I'm like WTF? Chew them out over that? But then other times, he seems reasonable.

Bill on the other hand, I just don't see anything in him other than him just seeming like he always has a chip on his shoulder.

The only thing that was missing was a voice over from Phil at the end explaining how he had a good life.

Didn't watch the "after the catch" special for the week, I take it? Just a 1-hour biography piece on Phil, which ended with exactly that scene...

That was for last week's episode. I did watch this week's episode and special and it wasn't all that surprising that they went for the schmaltz in the Phil special.

Both are dicks, but Keith brings it when it comes to crabbing, he usually has huge numbers. Bill on the other hand looks to be a failure, plus he showed a complete disregard to the safety of his crew. That's another thing I will give to Keith, he at least gets emotional over the safety of his crew sometimes.

Yeah it was the comment about him not being worried if his crew members got hit by the swinging pot that kind of pushed me over the edge where I made my comment.

Keith is definitley different in that regard.

How did you feel about the actual episode this week (not the special)? I thought it was suprisingly subdued in showing the reactions to Phil's death but I know you and I had such different reactions to last week's episode that I was curious about your thoughts on this one.

Both are dicks, but Keith brings it when it comes to crabbing, he usually has huge numbers.

A large part of those "huge numbers" is due to the Wizard being, by far, the largest crabbing boat in those waters, as a World War II ship that was converted to a fishing boat (I believe it's 155 feet long, and its berths dwarf the other boats in the area). Since Alaskan crab fishing moved from the derby to the quota system several years ago, "bringing it" is relative, since each boat can only catch a pre-determined amount of crab.

Which makes it dumb that they keep showing who's "winning" during the season. They should show it as a % of their quota, rather than just pounds. Wizard could catch 3x as many as a small boat, but the small boat could have filled their quota and done great at that number, whereas the Wizard would be way behind...

The crab count is the only part of the show they can really get a sponsor for, so they just have to keep doing it I guess.

Nah, keep DOING it, but just show it as percentage of their quota rather than gross pounds of crab, and show the leaders by how they are doing against their individual quotas.

Wizard might have the most crab at 200k pounds, but out of 1 million pounds.
Time Bandit has 150k pounds out of 500k pound quota.

Time bandit would show up second on the current list, but is doing better, being 30% complete rather than Wizard at 20%.

Just dumb the way they do it now, as the small boats always look like shit on the list (behind by hundreds of thousands of pounds), but are just as 'full' as the big guys, or even better. Since the quotas are so different, the actual list and the places on it never really change, because most of them can't legally do any better, even if they were on the motherload of crab...

Well, really, it doesn't matter either way. Unless they actually can't catch their quota, the show never has made a big deal about their count.

but it made sense when they started doing it, and they just never changed it when the whole fishing structure (quotas) changed up there. Dumb to show it at all at this point. But if they're going to show it for sponsorship, or whatever, might as well update the number to be something meaningful...

Sig Hansen is one of the creators and executive producers of the show, and with only about two weeks left to go before filming begins, he's potentially in breach of contract. There has to be more to this story than just the Hillstrands flaking out on a spin-off program. (I'd also imagine that Discovery is losing its shit right now, considering that without Phil Harris, Sig Hansen and the Hillstrands, the only recognizable personality on the show is Keith Coburn, and he certainly isn't someone around whom to build a show.)
