Phase II "Origins" teaser up on YouTube

I think showing the Kobayashi Maru test is a great way to sum up the totally different approaches to young Kirk that Bad Robot and Cawley's crew have taken.

But...you wouldn't see an external shot of the ship during a simulation, would you? Unless it's Spock or Pike or whoever watching on a monitor screen outside? The CG was it's ususal awesomeness, btw.

I loved the use of the term "Klingon Warbirds" :) I'll be counting the STXI references thoughout "Origins"!

The "warbirds" thing is a bit on the tickytack side (and this is coming from someone who confronted Braga directly on this one). So the Klingons and the Romulans have terms for their ships that mean essentially the same thing as what we call fighter planes (assuming that the term "warbird" even comes from either race; for all we know, that's just a Starfleet designation, like how NATO was hanging names on Soviet fighters and bombers that probably bore no resemblence whatsoever to what the Soviets called them).

Whatever. It amounts to trashing the whole thing because they got a button the wrong color.

All in all good. I am a little bugged by the nod to Braga and JJ with the "Klingon Warbirds" line. Just doesn't fit for me...

Quite frankly, I didn't even notice the line. As Cooper said to Pete Campbell in Mad Men, "Who cares?"

I've watched the teaser several times now, and it's pretty good.

However, I feel that Phase II has gotten into a cold-open rut. The majority of the show's teasers end with a space battle as the hook — it's becoming routine and not as exciting.

Even though this is a simulation, it's still a battle. I thought it'd be much stronger if, the simulation stops and Pike strides onto the bridge in dramatic fashion — roll to credits. The exterior shot — beautifully done, btw — bounced me out of the simulation. Not only that, but it's a cheat as a hook considering we know this is the Kobayashi Maru simulation.

It's even more a cheat for those who don't know and come back after the commercial break. Gotcha, the Enterprise wasn't destroyed.

The guy playing Finnegan was fantastic. What a riot with his cavalier attitude!

My other critique is the series' tendency to shoot in medium two-shots full frontal instead of in three-quarter. It makes the shot composition a bit flat. For instance, the bit where McCoy castigates Kirk for not dealing with his emotions. That shot would've been more interesting if shot at an angle with Kirk in foreground and McCoy slightly behind him — kinda like the scene in "The Corbormite Maneuver" mentioned earlier. Or something like this.

The lighting on the bridge was pitch-perfect in the teaser. Velour uniforms! Is this supposed to take place earlier in TOS — perhaps first season? Or are you guys making the switch?

Also is that a new Sulu?

Awesome start. I'm sure it'll be even more awesome once it's all put together.

I watched it again and noticed something: They say the Klingon ships are firing disruptors, and then we see them firing photon torpedoes. Yes, I'm ashamed I noticed this. No, it doesn't matter in the slightest :)

At least Disruptor fire was not coming from the photon tube.

Well, they are only seen very brief - so they could fire disruptors (off screen) and then just when the camera shows them they decide to fire photon torpedos, because they just look so much cooler!

You´ll see plenty of disruptor fire in "Kitumba", believe me :klingon:

Besides, it's a cadet making the report. It's possible he's letting his nervousness get to him and he's misidentifying which weapons are being fired ("who cares what they're firing, THEY'RE FIRING AT US!!").

It's also a rough cut. Letting folks see rough cuts is a good way to pick out minor goofs like this, so that they can be fixed before the thing is actually released.

At least that seems like a healthy way to look at nitpicky posts like these. :D

Looks good to me. Not really crazy about the public grilling McCoy starts to give Kirk. But beyond that I'm looking forward to seeing the rest, which is precisely what a good teaser should do - make me want to see more. Well done!

I remember a similar heated exchange on the bridge in the "The Corbomite Maneuver:"

MCCOY: I intend to challenge your actions in my records. I'll state that I warned you about Bailey's condition. Now that's no bluff.

KIRK: Any time you can bluff me, Doctor!

There was also a similar exchange in "Obsession:"

McCOY: One man has a chance for survival. The other is dead. You can add that little price tag to your monster hunt.

KIRK: That's enough, Bones.

MCCOY: It's not enough! You didn't care as long as you could hang your trophy on the wall. Well, it's not on it, Captain, it's in it!

I remember. I suppose my concern is more with the fact that in both those examples, the ship and crew were locked in battle or fighting for their lives. From what's included in the teaser, they weren't in combat; this just seemed like a routine flight home. There's (seemingly) no real reason Bones couldn't have just pulled Kirk aside to have this conversation. Kirk being moody, and Bones calling him out in it in front of everyone just struck me as "off."

Totally agreed.

Still looking forward to it. And that Finnegan... Wow!
Talk about a time warp.

Is it just me or does Captain Kirk's uniform shirt look a little...golder than usual? (eagerly awaits another of GSchnitzer's epic posts)

We have, all along in our productions, used the kind of fabric that was used in the third season. But we recently had custom-made (at significant cost) a whole bunch of "robe velour" and then had it custom dyed to Bill Theiss' original specification. So we started to use the type of fabric that was used in the first and second season--mostly because James loves the look so much.

Our episode doesn't actually take place back in the first or second season; James just likes the look better than the third season fabric. (I disagree with my fearless leader and I tell him "he's such a geek. But I'll support him by marching off a cliff if necessary.)

And yes: the dye color for the first and second season was slightly golder than the more avocado color of the third season fabric.

For folks who are looking for some in-universe reason why the crew of our Enterprise began wearing their older-style uniforms again shortly before getting their new TMP style uniforms in the next year or two (especially since we are supposed to be "Phase II," I would humbly suggest that you--hmmmm, how did Mr. Shatner put it?--ah, yes: get a life. ;)

Greg you know we have no life and wait to see your props year after year...

(jeez I really have to get a life... I just picked up my recently repaired UT and that was the highlight of my weekend...)

Greg, stop being so secretive! These folks can handle the truth.

The reason is simple, albiet tragic. When the Romulan cloaking device was stolen they were in such a hurry they didn't use the bio filter on the transporters when they brought it aboard. Unfortunately, it came with a dusting of the dreaded polythistle virus spores on it. Despite the Federation's best efforts, the virus became a pandemic on the polyester farms and wiped out all but a few of the breeding stock. While they work on a cure for the virus and carefully preserve the few polyesters still alive, the velour breeding farms have ramped up the harvest of the velour coats and the quartermasters in Starfleet have had to go back to their old suppliers for uniforms.

Since "Blood and Fire" it's filmed in high-def. What "definition" you are viewing has to do with where you are viewing it.

OK, I really needed to read this today. Thank you.

Actually it's because by the 3rd season the uniforms were washed so many times that the colours started to fade so they got new ones to replace them by the 4th and 5th seasons.
