Re: TUC

I guess I just found it odd when you singled out TUC for complaints about logic problems, in the face of so many better candidates.
It’s not really a “complaint.” Like I said, I embrace the logic problems in TUC. If you want to hear me complain about logic problems, let’s talk Insurrection, which is derailed by them. TUC manages to rise above them.

I've always thought 6 held up better than most. For instance, I wouldn't suggest anyone attempt your proverbial logic-bomb drinking game with The Wrath of Khan, a movie of even greater reputation but whose virtually every scene and plot point depends on either astonishing stupidity or WTF physics. Anyone attempting the drinking game there would die long before Spock does!
TUC holds up better than TWOK? I find that a surprising perspective, but maybe I just haven’t scrutinized TWOK the way I have TUC.

I agree that it would be better not to derail this thread with that discussion. Perhaps I’ll start another thread if I feel like cataloging these things.

Re: TUC

The Wrath of Khan still stands as my favorite of all of the films. Just to me everything came together perfectly. The uniforms, the general over all theme and the wow the music was just fantastic.

Since I'm tired of answering this question (and yet apparently suffer from serious impulse posting issues) I'm going to go off the board with Galaxy Quest.

If we’re going off board, I’m going with This Ain’t Star Trek XXX.

KIRK: Plot a parabolic course to avoid entering the Neutral Zone.
SULU: A straight line would also work.
KIRK: Parabolic, Mr. Sulu.
SULU: Yes sir.
KIRK: No, wait — elliptical.

I voted for TMP. There is a sense of mystery and of the unknown in that movie that I wish was more prevalent in the other movies and episodes. I'm also probably one of only a few who love the cloud flythrough and Vgar flyover sequences. The music during those sequences is awesome; very creepy and mysterious.

After allowing for cooling time between the latest movie and then comparison with all of the previous Trek movies, my favorite Star Trek movie, that I consider to be the best, is Star Trek (2009).

watched TMP again today, and I think it's the best, most "timeless" of the films.

The first 35 minutes are almost perfect, after that it's still very good. With a more likeable Decker, less penises and a completed Memory Wall scene, this would be a 10/10 movie.

The Undiscovered Country is "the" movie for me. I enjoy all of them, even Final Frontier.

I do wince at some of the stuff in Insurrection, though. Especially that boobs line.

Why does this surprise you?

TMP was made by someone who actually knew how to make a film.

1. The costuming makes your eyes bleed.
2. The film has poor use of time.
3. The concept isn't fully delivered on.
4. It ages very badly with time. It makes TOS look un-dated.

Sure the concept is good, but it isn't delivered in the right manner. In contrast, VI has allegorical value, manages its time well, ages well, has an equally good concept, an excellent antagonist, and doesn't make my eyes bleed.

I rank TMP level with III. Thats above Nemesis, V, and the new thing. In that order.

Would it be wrong to dredge up an old topic and suggest...

Forbidden Planet...? :guffaw:

You may! It might not be Star Trek, but it's still flippin' awesome.

I have to disagree. Despite the fact that it was made in the wake of Star Wars' popularity, TMP was a true love letter to the purest elements of Star Trek. It was far truer to the ideals of Trek than the rough, militaristic TWoK (and in most cases the films following.)

TMP may be far from perfect, but it's much more Star Trek than most Star Trek has dared to be. I'm pleasantly surprised it's ranking so high in this poll!

It was a tough one between FC and TWOK for me, but FC just edged it purely because when I've been looking for a couple of hours to kill, I've gone to First Contact more often.

To be honest, I wasn't keen on last year's film, so it registers somewhere in the bottom three for me alongside TFF and TMP. Not that I hate TMP, it's a beautifully made film. It's just brought down by a lack of pace for me.

:) I'm tired of the bad rep that Final Frontier has. I personally find it the most stylish, witty and enjoyable of the original casts ventures. Shatner's direction is great!
