Inferno - Another highly regarded story from season 7. For me it suffers from being a bit overlong, but it's still a great story. Probably 4 out of 5.

I like the alternate universe stuff. It's got that standard "It's too late for our universe but maybe you can still save yours stuff" that happens in a lot of these parallel universe stories on different series. (Stargate SG-1's "There but for the Grace of God" springs immediately to mind.)

Still, you're right. It's way too long. Thus, they needed to pad it with a bunch of random monster attacks. Plus, I think it would have been more effective if they hadn't kept crosscutting back to the regular universe while the Doctor was stranded in the parallel one. It diminished the sense of the Doctor being trapped.

BTW,
When I first heard in "The Hungry Earth" that they were drilling into the Earth, I was expecting a call back to the world ending magma flows of "Inferno," not a return of the Silurians.

Horror of Fang Rock - Fairly good, but it drags a little bit. 3, maybe 3.5

It's a nice little claustrophobic horror story. But for me, I don't like that all of the guest stars die. It makes the whole thing feel like a failure, even though the Doctor successfully repels the Rutan invasion. If even just one or two of the less odious guest stars had survived, I think it would be a lot more satisfying. I also like that the Rutans are the villains here. AFAIK, this is the only time we've ever seen the Sontarans' long-time rivals.

Revelation of the Daleks - My favourite story from my favourite Doctor, and my favourite Dalek story. There's some genuine gruesomeness in there too. Not far behind Andronzani and The Silurians in my esteem, and probably the most underated DW story in my view.

This one just doesn't work for me. While it introduces a lot of interesting guest characters, none of them are as well developed as I'd like. It's also very gruesome and sometimes very confusing. (Although, if you listen to the Colin Baker Big Finish audio "Davros," you can see some of the lead up to where Davros is in this story.)

Remembrance of the Daleks - Probably my second favourite Dalek story. Very entertaining (if fanwanky), it's another genuine classic and perhaps McCoy's best story.

This is one of my favorites too. It's the 1st Sylvester McCoy story I ever saw and still one of the best. His relationship with Ace is a lot of fun here.
"Remember those explosives I told you not to bring?"
"Yeah?"
"Give them to me."

I also love an early exchange between Group Captain Gilmore (so similar to the Brigadier that even the Doctor forgets the difference) & the Doctor:
"Nothing remotely human could have possibly survived that."
"That's the point, Group Captain. The Daleks aren't even remotely human."
(I love the way McCoy rolls his "r" on "remotely.")

Carol Ann Ford fascinated me. She wasn't a particularly good actress, but she still pulled off an otherworldly mystique. A bit awkward and not especially beautiful, something about the way she carried herself really lent to the idea she wasn't human.

I think she's very beautiful, albeit in a very unusual way. But then, she reminds me a lot of a girl I know IRL. http://www.lesliewall.com/headshots.html (Kinda like a young Susan but with a narrower face, I think. I want to make a Susan fanfilm with her.)

Just bought The War Games and The Deadly Assassin on DVD. I am not too familiar with classic Who, sadly. I was born in 82, and very little Who was shown in reruns when I was a wee bairn. But I remember a few old serials from my childhood. Recently, after watching and loving the Matt Smith season, I watched a few old Who clips on Youtube, and was very impressed. I'm one of those kids born after 1980 who actually has an attention span, you see. I started The War Games the other night. I have never seen it before. I'm up to episode four. It's very good stuff so far.

i've watched Planet of the Daleks (good), Terror of the Autons (great) and Invasion of the Dinosaurs (pretty good)

Just started rewatching Trials of a Time Lord. Haven't watched it for years.

I was surprised by how good the opening effects of the pan around and the Tardis being captured was.

6 and Peri are a much better match than 5 and Peri

I just finished The Horror Of Fang Rock and it's still a good story. I'd still like to see a modern take on the Sontaran/Rutan war I think modern visual effects would make it look awesome.

I love the notion of the Rutans in actual combat with the Sontarans because their nature as shapeshifters mean they could be anything! Daleks, dinosaurs, Sontarans...er that must be a confusing war!

Well I'm not they're all able to change their shape, I was under the impression that "Reuben" was trained to do that to be able to be used as a spy.

Just watched Vengeance on Varos from beginning to end for the first time since the 1980's. Easily the Colin episode with the most to say. And I was thankful there was no "rubbish monster", either. Overall, The Doctor didn't do much bu show up, free the Connery rebel, and then try and avoid dying the rest of the episode. He finally just tells the President that his minerals are worth more than Sil is paying, Sil's forces find another source of the stuff at the same time, and the government collapses. I mean, "changes its ways". Whatever.

Nabil did an excellent job as Sil, and I would love to see him reprise the role in a cameo in Torchwood or something. Also liked the President. I originally thought the actor was wooden in his performance. But, age has revealed he is playing him low-key on purpose. Not only to portray the President and tired but, deep down, honorable. But, also because Colin and Nabil play it so LOUD. LOL!

Think it would be cool to find out what the repercussions of The Doctor's interference in the balance of things turned out to be for Varos. Akin to 'The Long Game'/'Bad Wolf', I would love to see an exploration into a society so completely changed by The Doctor. Was there a rebellion when the Death Shows ended? How did they survive the new economy? What sort of government controls them now?

Good stuff. 3/5 as far as Who goes. 5/5 for Colin's era. :techman:

I'm currently in the process of watching "The Krotons", my first experience with the 2nd Doctor, not to mention Zoe (nice legs!) and Jamie. :)

^ I hope that doesn't make a bad first impression: it's not regarded as one of the 2nd doctor's better stories.

^Agreed, it's my favourite Colin story and I keep meaning to rewatch it but, and I know this'll sound a bit daft, the 45 minute episode run time puts me off a bit, finding 25 minutes free is ok, but 45?!:guffaw:

The only real weakness in the whole thing is Jason Connery's incredibly wooden performance. Sil is a wonderful villain, I'd love to see him on NuWho. A great story because it isn't just about reality TV, but also about politics. Face it in many ways Varos is the ultimate democracy because the populace get to vote on practically everything! The trouble is the president can't put in place short term hardships to make the longer term brighter. Just brilliant!

Anyway, I'm currently half way through Fenric so will report back once completed :techman:

Yeah, he certainly didn't get any of his dad's skills, did he? I wonder what he decided to do with the rest of his life?

As for Sil, I'd love to see him either way. But, I was thinking an encounter with Captain Jack and Torchwood would help not re-introduce him in a campy way, like Who would have to do. Because he's so physically slimy, I feel like his level of decadence and lack of ethics could be FULLY explored in Torchwood.

But, again, I'd love to see him again, either way... :techman:
