New competition for SyFy? The Syzygy Network

If enough of us Like it that'll give it the boot to get going; then we can see. We can always abandon ship if the band isn't on our tune.

The fact that they aren't even trying to get any original programming for the first few years is going to kill them before it even gets started. Unless they can throw up at least a couple hours a week of programming to actually draw me to their channel I will have no reason to ever bother seeking them out. There are just too many channels out there to base a new one on reruns and old movies.

The Syzygy Network is a new cable network coming in 2012. This network will be entirely dedicated to Science Fiction and Fantasy fans.

We will diligently hunt down the most obscure scifi from around the globe and bring it to the network, as well as airing well-known titles. We'll bring you new programming as funding allows, including our own productions and those of other companies.

We're already working on partnerships with other producers, production companies, artists, writers, and organizations to make this all a reality.
I wish them the best of luck and hope that it actually happens. I do think there's a market for another science-fiction/fantasy channel. Lord knows there are a ton of shows that I wish SYFY were running today...

But that's how most cable channels, including The SciFi Channel (as it was originally known), got their start. They were mostly reruns of old shows with little or no original programming. Of course, that was before Netflix, so maybe there was more of a market for rerun-driven TV than there is now.

Getting carriage on a cable network isn't as easy as it used to be either. I am going to have to spend some time on their site, but do they mention where they will be carried?

If the Comcast purchase of NBC/U goes through, they may not be receptive to putting a competitor for one of their new networks on their system. They probably will, to show they are not being biased, but there are plenty of ways they can screw with a competitor.

And I fear if they start putting old series on their network, they'll have to cut them severely for commercials, or short change themselves the necessary revenue to operate a network.

These days, old shows tend to be aired nearly in their entirety but digitally accelerated to make room for more commercials. I've noticed that with Mission: Impossible reruns on the American Life Network; I had been assuming that a lot was cut out, but when I saw the same episodes on DVD, I realized they were virtually uncut but sped up, and that the distorted quality of the music was an artifact of the digital acceleration. I also noticed that the Greatest American Hero episodes Syfy ran in a marathon on Sunday were sped up.

Fingers crossed that they have heard the complaints about Skiffy.

There are complaints about everything. And if you change in response to those complaints, you just get complaints from other people about what you're doing instead. Basing your decisions solely on audience complaints is a sucker's game. The way to succeed is to have a clear vision of your own, not just react out of fear of others' disapproval.

There are many shows on their lists that are not readily available anywhere (even illegally) so having a channel with them is appealing.

Right now Sygyzy has about 5 original shows ready to go. They are working on funding currently.

While true, I was referring to (wrestling) and other off-topic aspects of Skiffy. You can design a channel at least in part by taking into account the mistakes you competitors have made....

So, it's all X Files all the time?

(like, that episode being the only place that the name is familiar from to most viewers!)

Syzygy was better back when it was called Sci-Zigi.

Well someone had to make that lame joke eventually. :p

Anyway, I wouldn't get my hopes up anytime soon. This is a long way from the television screen, and not likely ever to make it that far.

I'll check back in when they have a) original content that is b) either on a station I get or offered thru Netflix.

Got synopses of them?
