Wonder Woman's new look: At long last, pants!

Eh, I find her to be applying a fashion double standard. She's blasting the new costume on the grounds that it's out of fashion, but gives the old costume a pass because it "brands" Wonder Woman (which is an icky verb, even more so when it refers to a person, even a fictional one) and because she "kinda likes it". I mean, she doesn't give any sort of fashion critique of the old costume, because if she did it would not hold up well. The argument about showing skin meaning being powerful holds a little weight, but when the rest of the skin is wrapped in a one-piece swimsuit made of an American flag, well, let's say that's a bit distracting from the whole 'I'm really powerful, can't you tell by my bare legs?'

Not that I'm disagreeing with her summing up of the fashion sense of comic book artists, which is abysmal as a general rule. But several people in this thread managed to say that much more efficiently by pointing out that this new design is very 90s.

You know what's even funnier than the idea of feminists who don't read Wonder Woman writing critiques of Wonder Woman? Men who don't know anything about feminists writing critiques of feminist critiques of Wonder Woman.

As to that article you posted - it's ridiculous. Firstly, most feminists don't think about Wonder Woman at all - they're concerned with actual women and the real world. Secondly, Wonder Woman isn't celibate because feminists would throw a fit if she got laid, she's celibate because a group of geeky guys (and the occasional geeky woman) conceived her as, for a while, an innocent from an isolated society in the modern world, and later, as a pure warrior. Just like the period in the 70s where it said in Batman's writer's bible that he was celibate because it was part of the character. Quit blaming the evil feminist conspiracy for things you don't like in fiction.

I'm not wild about the new costume but I never liked the original either. Dressing up in the Flag seemed a trifle on the nose - that's all well and good for Captain America, but what's that got to do with the Amazonian warrior woman?

Nerys - Well, that's a start I suppose.

I just think she's too burdened by being this iconic figure she's supposed to be. JMS' change helps that a lot but still the complaints about the costume come.

A start? That the short version of nearly 70 years of the character's history! Not sure what this iconic "burden" is.

Well my complaints are based on the fact it's not a very good design for a superhero. Though,for a night club hopping, it could work.

Turning Wonder Woman into what JMS thinks a "street fighter" should look like misses the whole point of Wonder Woman.

They should have left well enough alone. Fox News poll say 82% prefer the old style. What I find a little irritating is that the pants revamp wasn't done to be more feminist or less skimpy, but the redesign eliminated all the Americana. What's next, Captain America dresses in green and becomes Mr. Earth? Some things are fine the way they are, be it for their classic appeal, longevity, or nostalgia. Some things can't or should not be modernized.

As far as I'm considered, WW is still in the perpetual forties fighting Nazis. These comics came out as good versus evil and pro American because they were needed at the time, and because they had cause and inspiration beyond dollars they were dang good. What is with this recent stretch to make old comics ridiculously updated? Aren't there enough modern dark and gritty comics already that we don't have to wreck new ones?

What kind of adults actively speculate on the sex lives of superheroes? And how dumb does a company have to be to have a policy in place regarding one of their characters celibacy? (Why take such a question seriously) Does JK Rowling have an official policy on the sexual actvity (or lack there of) of the students at Hogwarts? Do people debate which Hardy Boy might have had sex with Nancy Drew?

So you must be an American and/or wear the American flag to protect the United States? I get that the character might have a bit of an immigrant angle (just like Superman is from outer space but he's American!); but that doesn't necessitate the big garish flag costume.
