rewatching again, from eccleston, tennant, to smith

it's interesting to compare the three now that smith's had a full series for us to base observations off of. One thing that strikes me is how human, or human-like, tennant's doctor comes off as compared to smith's. Smith is just weird, and not weird as in bipolar -- something that eccleston seemed like sometimes, unstable a better word? -- but foreign and foreign-looking.

You mean...alien? :shifty:

As much as I enjoyed Tennent, he's the least "real" to me. I've known people not to far from 9 and 11, but Tennent reeked too much of "shtick" and his clown act got old real fast. He was better low key, than all bombastic and hyper manic. I think his moment is passing and I don't think his run will be as well regarded down the road as it is today. Not that it'll be at the Colin Baker \ Sylvester McCoy level tho.

Smith's Doctor is far closer to the Doctors of old than his immediate predeccesors. I like that they sort of powered him down, so to speak. Less omnscient, more absent minded.

I agree: Smith is dangerously close to knocking Eccleston of the favourite spot (out of the new docs) for me...

...and for those very reasons.

I third this notion. All in favor to like Matt Smith over Tennant for the exact reasons listed above?

Aye!

Motion carried. :techman:

The new Doctors (plus McGann) are the only ones I have to compare to Smith, but in just one season Smith may have already overcome Tennant to become my favorite Doctor. :techman:

Oh, Aye Aye Aye!! I don't even miss my beloved ninth Doctor any more, and Tennant never came any where near my top spot. Sorry Tennant fans, but aside from goofy, the man can't act (yes, that's IMO).

I can see how Tennant could have grated on people, but personally I never got tired of him. I always loved that joyous, bombastic spirit of his, and found it incredibly endearing.

True, he never felt truly alien, but he was so damn likeable I almost didn't mind.

I haven't seen his full run but Smith has yet to equal the simple "No."

He still seems Troughton-esque, a bit derivative. But as I like Troughton that is not such a bad thing.

Hmmm....I actually don't find him "Troughton-esque" at all, really. I mean, except for the bow tie. In fact, he's far more Davison and Tom and Colin Baker, to me...

Oh.. definitely like Tennant more than Smith. Without a doubt. Eccelston was decent too. Baker is, and always will be, the best.

1- Tom Baker
2- Tennant

These two stand out among the rest by far. Smith has a chance to be in that category but will have to stand up over multiple seasons to do so even if I think he's quite good so far.

I love Tennant, and I'm coming to love Smith (though I think he'll need about another season to fully grow into the role). But Eccleston remains transcendent, the standard by which all other Doctors are measured to my mind.

I only hope the next Doctor gets to have a non-RP accent again. :bolian:
