How many commands has Riker been offered?

.... Although nothing realistically explains how Worf kept showing up.

He was still part of the E-D crew durin' GEN.

He was in command of the Defiant (as seen durin' DS9, he could do that from time to time) durin' FC.

The novelization (and ya can almost hear him say it in the movie) established that Worf was helpin' to set up a defense perimeter against the Dominion in INS (yeah, that was weak).

And of course he'd be at the weddin' for Riker & Troi in NEM! Wesley even left the higher plain to be there, for cryin' out loud!

I always felt sorry for the episode directors' post Best of Both Worlds.

"Okay Frakes. Stand to the right of Stewart and look real constipated.", which was essentially all that was left of the character from that point on.

Too bad they didn't write him in to take the Melbourne. I'd love to see a Best of Both Worlds version with Data in command of the D and Riker struggling to keep himself and his crew alive at Wolf 359.

^Shelby would have been in command of the Enterprise

You want the most EFFICIENT and no-nonsense crew in all of Starfleet? Here's your list...

- Admiral Nechayev

- Captain Jellico

- Commander Shelby

- Commander Data

Oh, what a smooth-running ship that would be...

So much "By The Book" going on that the bridge would smell like a library, they'd probably remove Holodecks (too much of a distraction) and replicators (replacing it with Starfleet Rations, Water and Bularian Canapés)

Will simply lacked the balls to handle his own command, and only accepted one at the last minute, and only after fifteen years of being at Commander rank.

I think it made him a more complex character though. Riker's main trait was his confidence and laid-back/self-assured attitude. He may have been sure of himself, but not fully enough to command his own vessel.

His performance during the mission to capture Locutus and stop the Borg Cube at Earth should have been all the evidence he needed that he was a more than capable Captain. He just grew too comfortable where he was, as Admiral Hanson pointed out.

I always just thought that Riker stayed on board the Enterprise because he assumed that when Picard got promoted he would be handed the keys based on his performance with the Borg. It was the Enterprise that he wanted.

I never bought the excuses that he was too comfortable, or that he didn't have enough confidence to be command his own ship.

Again, the TPTB could have come up with something early in season three that would have knocked his confidence or given a legitimate excuse as to why Riker, despite being completely focused on his career, was turning down all those offers. Anything would have done, heck, I would have even accepted wanting to get back together with Troi as an excuse.

It did bug me, and re-watching the episodes it still does.

He turned down the TNZ job on this website. Does that count?

But, seriously, I think, once the Dominion War started, his 'choice' of not taking a command until Picard left the NCC-1701E should have been taken away. I can't believe that for the four years that war waged on DS9, or three years whatever, that Riker didn't get his own command. But, no, he's still being breast-fed by Picard in Insurrection.

I just rewatched The Icarus Factor, and I can't really discern why Riker didn't take the Ares command. Everything we knew about the character up to that point said that his one goal in life was to become a starship captain. Now it's his on a platter and he says no?

The reason he gives, "this is where it's best for me to be right now," is ridiculous. It's not like he's a college junior choosing between an internship and a study abroad program. This is his chance to grab the reins! His own captain pretty much told him, "Take the job, you schmuck!" And still he said no.

I can think of two reasons why he did:

1. He realizes that he doesn't have to compete with his father any more, and he doesn't need to impress him. He finally realizes that he likes being a second-in-command, and that the Enterprise is a pretty good gig. He doesn't need to be an explorer or a diplomat in his own right--he'll just assist Picard.

2. He decided that Deanna Troi was the love of his life, and that a life apart from her, no matter how great it might be, just wasn't worth living. Of course he never told her this, and she didn't figure it out for another ten years, but it's possible.

So they didn't explain why he turned down the first command, let alone the second or third.

After a while, maybe they just started him offering commands as a practical joke.

or..some of that Picard/Riker slash has some merit to it after all.

And, like sex, you want to make sure your first one is with one you WANT, not one that just happens to be available.

Unless you're Kirk.

Which means what exactly? You're starting to sound like a troll who hasn't even watched Star Trek.

It was a joke for gods sake. Kirk is (suposedly) known for jumping any woman that moves, especially in the latest movie. So, a joke about the one that's available.
