The best decade of film

I'd say, it comes in waves. For instance, the 30's were good to film, the 80's extremely good, and I'm sure there will be another golden age soon.

Undoubtedly the 2000s for me. No illusions that that's anything other than a reflection of the peak (to date) of my engagement with the medium. Regardless of how willing one may be to explore the products of the past, the present offers infinitely greater opportunities for exposure to niche and second/third-tier productions and consequently offers a richer and more nuanced spectrum of experience.

'70s was good. Godfather, Taxi Driver, Star Wars, The French Connection, the Omen, the Exorcist, Alien, Rocky, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Life of Brian, Logan's Run, Blazing Saddles, Halloween, Willy Wonka, Jaws, Close Encounters, Superman, Cuckoo's Nest, The Odessa File, etc etc etc. So many of my favorites are from that decade.

The 2000's have been cool because more opportunities have opened up for independent filmmakers. You get alot of crap as a result, but also a bunch of gems that wouldn't have seen the light of day in any other decade.

The 80s and last decade were awful for the most part.

I often hear this, but all of my favourite comedies come from this time. It was a fun era, probably the most imaginative and fun of any that I can think of. But I admit, I'm not a film historian or anything close to that, so I'm wondering why most people think this?

Or is this why, since things were lighter in tone and not as serious? I'm not even sure if that's a generalization or not.

The '80s were great, too. Indiana Jones, Empire Strikes Back, Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Nightmare on Elm Street, Die Hard, Terminator, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Goonies, Lost Boys, Raising Arizona, Fish Called Wanda, The Road Warrior, Spinal Tap, Beverly Hills Cop, Naked Gun, Poltergeist, ET, Aliens, Superman 2, Star Treks 2-4, Scarface, Breakfast Club, the Shining, Beetlejuice, Batman, Witches of Eastwick, Monster Squad, Hellraiser, Excalibur...

Late 70s, all of the 80s and early 90s. Since Matrix and 9/11 virtually everything in film and television has become quite shite.

I overreacted there. There were a lot of great, fun movies that decade. But when you look at it from a best picture category, it was awful.

I agree with the statement that TV is better than ever. In many ways, the true potential of TV is being realized.

I agree, it was a great time for comedies, my favorite genre.

In the United States, the 1970s is easily my favorite decade of Hollywood film production (technically something like 1967-1980). There was far less censorship, the studios were funding much more inventive and challenging fare, and the generation of young filmmakers that emerged in that decade put the influence of the French New Wave and other foreign film movements to good use. Worldwide, though, I don't have an answer.

The 1970s pushed the limits of film-making and introduced the modern blockbuster.

The 1980s was a great time for fun comedies and action/adventure movies.

The 1990s began pushing the boundaries of what was possible with special effects in movies like T2, Jurassic Park and Titanic.

The 00s took the ball and ran with it, creating some amazing projects and some stinkers. It was the decade of comic book movies, a lot of them, and of LOTR and Harry Potter. Independent film took off. The Internet.

2010's

Furry Vengeance
Grown Ups
Marmaduke
:rommie:

Right now is the best time for film - new releases, and a historically unmatched access to the past via dvd and blu-ray. Does it really matter what the single best decade was? Do those decades have to start and end in a year finishing with the number 0? Can't we all just eat ice cream, pet puppies and watch Casablanca in hi-def if nothing as good as Iron Man 2 is playing at the multiplex? :p
