Stupid Things People Say

Of course, all Macintosh computers have used a four-digit year code from the beginning. So if you used a Mac -- no problem!

Macs actually have (had? not sure) a similar issue, it just wouldn't kick in until 2036 or some odd time like that.

That's the Unix Epoch or what ever they call it.

While there was some hardware issues with Y2K (clocks using the 2 digits for the data), it was just as much software so even if your hardware platform had a four digit year, you could still of been screwed because you software only used 2 digits (in some instances it was lazy programming, in others it was writing code when you only had limited memory available to run in so every byte saved in the executable was a good thing).

Yeah, the problem is they never really had the foresight to change things, so it's why so much money was spent recoding and reprogramming things at the last minute to make sure computers wouldn't have a problem. Some people knew of the problem as far back as the 60's, but they didn't think it was much a problem. They didn't expect that some programs would still be in use decades from then.

Two instances from the same person, who really believed he was using the right words...

1. "I resemble that remark!"

2. "What are you incinerating?"

it has nothing to do with religion.

Whether or not there is a god also has nothing to do with religion.

Religion is a man-made bureaucracy that exists between man and god and exists regardless of whether there is a god or not
Oh man, you see? That didn't get very far.
Discussing deities is religion.

You are missing my point. Even if you (generic you) believe in God (which is itself akin to believing in something without proper evidence simply because it is comforting) saying "God did it" makes you sounds stupid (the point of this thread) because there are naturalistic explanations for pretty much everything. And those few things that there isn't a satisfactory explanation for are mysteries, and it is not a good idea to make up the solution to a mystery just because the answer isn't forthcoming.

I always heard it as resent. I'm not even sure what it means with "resemble" in there....

Basically another way of saying "Yeah, so what?"

"You're fat!"
"Hey, I resemble that remark!" :p

Her: "Does this dress make me look fat?"
Him:"No; its the fat that makes you look fat"

It's only that first sentence that's stupid. Because whenever anyone says that, they *know* they look fat, and they will not be satisfied by ANY possible answer to that question. The second sentence is brute realism, yeah, but not stupid.

A couple from the last couple days:

Said to me, in line, at the grocery store by a woman: "You don't know me? I used to fuck your father."

Apparently she was one of dad's ex-girlfriends from back before he met my mother. Classy, eh?

Today, in town, cops pull someone over for a traffic stop in front of the Wal-Mart. Small crowd of onlookers. Someone shouts: "Hey pig, why don't you beat his ass!?"

Holy shit, that first one's nuts!

"God did it."

"I believe in ghosts."
----- Flying Spaghetti Monster

Don't turn this into one of your "shit on people's beliefs" threads, because you really don't have a leg to stand on and this is supposed to be fun, or at least not so serious.

Now, how about some dumb headlines?

A couple of points.
First.. my quote might not be accurate and if it is it is taken out of context. I offered a qualifier that I believe in the possibility of ghosts, because, hey, I've seen some weird shit. And I will say that the possibility of ghosts is more likely than the possibility of God, they are not mutually exclusive concepts. I do agree that ghosts are unlikely, and so is God. Put it this way, I am not saying that no God exist, but I am saying that all claims of God that others have put forth have failed to meet their burden of proof sufficient for me to believe. Same with my claim of ghosts, but I was just contemplating the possibility that they do, but I wasn't claiming with certainty that they do. Is it just me, but I think there is a big difference between considering the possibility of ghosts, some remnant of life we might not understand, and claiming that an all power, all knowing God that exists outside of time and space who created a universe billions of light years in size would come down bodily to a tiny desert and expect to convince people that he exists because he is human for three decades are two different concepts entirely? I think there is a big difference. And I'm not making the claim that ghosts exists, not trying to back it up with any kind of dogma. I'm not trying to convince anyone. Religions do try to convince me that God exists.

But here is the point.. getting back to the thread topic.. my argument is that even if you believe in God (despite lack of evidence to back up up any such claim) saying "God did it" is stupid. It just is. It shows a lack a lack of essential critical thinking skills.

Does the fact that you made a stupid point give you pause?

I'm not aware of what stupid point I made, but if making stupid points gave one pause you'd be a fucking still life.

If you want to go on a God rant, start your own topic instead of derailing this one. It was one thing to make the initial comment, but then you built on it and built on it until it started becoming all about you and your BIG ISSUE.
