I, personally, wanted to watch a Star Trek movie, not thinly veiled Star Wars remake. But, once again, that's just me. Apparently eveybody else is perfectly alright with it.

I've seen each ST movie 10-15 times and each SW movie about three times. JJ's ST film does not remind me about SW at all. It does, however, remind me of TOS, TNG, ENT and the TOS movies.

Hmmm. Now that I think about it, she really does hate the Shat. And she won't watch TOS with me. So, maybe that's not such a bad idea after all. Maybe I'll give it a try.

Woooo. I've watched a the Star Wars trilogies a LOT more than you have. I lost count of how many times I've watched the Star Trek movies and I've watched the first 3 SW movies at least a dozen times each and I've watched the last 3 at least 5 or 6 times each. I love SW. But not as much as ST. And my problem with all the SW stuff generously slathered all over this new ST movie is that they are two different styles of storytelling. Trek and Wars are like water and oil. They don't mix well. And it is totally personal preference on my part, but I would rather not have any Wars in my Trek. A little easter egg like R2 floating around here and there is fine. But what JJA did was just way too much for my taste. But again, that's me.

I could list the intentional similarities myself. I listened to the BR commentary. The writers grew up on those films as we have. Both franchises cannot help but influence each other.
Obi Wan's reaction to the death of the inhabitants of Alderaan is a direct lift frim TOS' "The Immunity Syndrome."
Sound effects from and inspired by TOS wound up in Star Wars. Ben Burtt is a huge trekkie.

ILM did the SFX work for an awful lot of Star Trek over the last couple of decades...

There's going to be a lot of crossover and that's to be expected when you have so many people working in the genre. I am not bothered by easter eggs and homages.

Nick Meyer wasn't a Star Trek fan and directed arguably the best film of the entire series.

Nemesis was written by a self proclaimed Trekkie and that movie stunk up the theatre like an exploding colostomy bag.

I don't think the SW homages hurt this film. The writers did a bunch of research into Star Trek lore that more than make up for these little things..

They nailed Spock's childhood!! They nailed Kirk and McCoy's friendship..

They did Kirk differently because they could. His destiny changed the moment the lightning storm in space appeared, and that idea was a direct lift from Yesterday's Enterprise. It also doesn't preclude the possibility of him being a stack of books with legs. After all he made it through the program in three years and was portrayed as a rebel genius.

I don't have a problem with his "Luke Skywalker" moment of seeing the ship for the first time. I am sure the TOS universe Kirk would have looked upon the construction of the 1701 with the same amount of awe and wonder.

Anyone who has read about quantum mechanics would understand the concept of the timeline trying to heal itself, justfiying the "coincidences" in the film that lead our crew to be together by the end. The film is supposed to be about how this crew gets together.

Putting this universe in an alternate reality gives the creative team the license to have them on that bridge 8-9 years earlier than TOS. It's not SUPPOSED to be TOS. It is a reboot that still honors the existance of TOS.

Frankly I'm glad they did this because I am SICK of someone trying to write in some kind of back story and hearing the vocal minority hyperventilating that someone had the nerve to change something that they read in some fan novel or getting their knickers in a twist because they redesigned the ship. I had to listen to this childish drivel when ENT was on the air. Get over it. You're not in charge. If you don't like it, then don't watch, but your dissatisfaction shouldn't preclude my enjoyment or the enjoyment of the others who like this film and the revival of these characters. No one is coming to take your novels and DVD's away. Give. It. A. Rest.

Some themes are common to good (and poor) storytelling: a protagonist hero; an antagonist for him/her; obstacles to overcome; the hero's true destiny, etc.

Since the special effects were done by Industrial Light and Magic which is owned by the creator of Star Wars, some 'Easter eggs' are expected. In fact, it has become a trademark of ILM to place SW references in almost all their productions.

I can live with those. Some of them are really interesting. If you make such an itemized list, I would watch it. It would be for very different reasons than you, but I would watch it.

Althought I mostly agree with 3D Master's observations, I can say that I may possibly be a bit more civilized and use fewer "colorful metaphors" in my commentary.

That, I don't have a problem with. There's no way to watch a movie that doesn't borrow some sort of "theme" from another movie/TV show/Novel/Play, etc. Truely "new" ideas are few and far between these days. Using a common theme is not the same as placing multiple, deliberate, and obvious references to a completely different movie franchise into a movie in which they have no place.

I don't have a problem with that either. I rather enjoy the occasional easter egg. Like the Falcon showing up during the Borg battle in FC. Or the Firefly in the original NuBSG miniseries. Stuff like that, "true" easter eggs, that you have to actually "look for" don't bother me in the least. In fact it is a treat to actually find one. But multiple, obvious references placed throughout the movie do bother me.
