A short and early blog entry today as I’m heading off to the first stop in Robert C. Cooper’s farewell victory tour. ”What’s that?” you say. You didn’t know hew was leaving? Well, yes. Sad but true. His appearance at this year’s Comic Con panel will mark his final Stargate-related contribution, so if you happen to be in the San Diego area in late July, make sure to say goodbye and thank him for fourteen years and countless hours of gate-tastic entertainment. But, please – no tears. If you start crying it’ll only be a matter of time before he starts crying as well (the ole softy) and that’ll just embarrass him.

I really loved his stories so I hope he's got some other work lined up.

I'm not surprised by this, since I've heard elsewhere that he wanted to do something else after spending so much time on Stargate and MGM probably kept him around for SGU's first season to ease the transition into the new show.

If only Mallozzi and Mullie would leave instead.

I can understand why Robert C. Cooper is leaving, though. He's been with the franchise as long as anyone except for Brad Wright--almost a decade and a half. He's already used it as a platform to launch a directing career, and he'll earn residuals from co-creating SGU and SGA now.

Some are saying on Gateworld that he has left because MGM/SciFi arent happy with the ratings for SGU so are suggesting changes to the show which maybe he's not happy about. SGU was his show and idea so why leave after 1 series?

I have mixed feelings on this. Cooper wrote some of the best episodes of SG-1 and Atlantis. Even his early SG-1 like The First Commandment, while average compared to what the series later gave us, shines when compared to the other first season episodes. And he kept the quality up as recent as his last Atlantis episode, Vegas.

Unfotunately, his SGU work, like much with that series, left much to be desired. I know it's one of the more popular episodes for some reason, but I was not a fan of the episode Time. And he also directed the episode Life which I found artsy and pretentious. But alas, not much on SGU is working out for me anyway, and this is not the thread to criticize SGU.

Still, as one of the Stargate franchise's best writers and equally as great directors he will be missed and I wish him luck in future endeavors.

Well he'll still be there til the end of the season.

“I’m not leaving completely, actually — just stepping back to more of a consulting role for the end of this season,” Cooper told GateWorld. “However, my credit will remain Executive Producer. We’ve already developed most of Season Two and I feel very confident leaving the show in good hands.”

Cooper’s final contribution to the stalwart franchise will be a stage panel appearance at San Diego Comic-Con, promoting the second season of Stargate Universe (now in production). He also tells GateWorld that he’ll be writing one more episode for late Season Two.

That's it for me, folks! Mallozzi will be running the show and I've no interest in the man's work. From his blog:

Paul and I will continue our show running duties alongside Brad for the show’s third year.

Any idea what they are? And do you have a link?

What has Mallozzi done that has everyone so pissed? (curious)

He's an awful, one note writer. He drove Atlantis into the ground when he became showrunner and wrote some of its worst episodes. His SGU episodes were also lacking, especially the three part finale.

Changing up the writers on SGU can only improve things. I'm no fan of Mallozi, I wish he was leaving too, but any change is good.

The MGM financial situation will no doubt play a major role in all this.

That's kind of huge... I almost dread the show has in store in the long term, assuming it even gets a S3.

Mallozzi is becoming showrunner? Fuck. When he was in charge of Atlantis, the show was at its worst. His work on this series has not been impressive, either.

Mallozi wrote Subversion? That's just weird, because I thought that was one of the best episodes of the whole season. That said, he needs to be let go ASAP and replaced with someone competent.
