World Cup 2010 - South Africa Thread

Kewell would have to have been the Venus de Milo to avoid stopping that shot. "Deliberate" handball? Ridiculous. Still, it's done and we now need even more of a miracle to progress. At least we had a bit more of a go this time.

This World Cup is pretty much anyone's game if the first round is anything to go by so far.

Unless you're Dutch. :bolian:

Or support Cameroon. :(

The Slovenian player went far beyond what is usually tolerated
That really isn't true. Just look at English Premiership. You wouldn't believe how much shit the players get away with there...

BTW...

The ref obviously isn't signaling offside there.

I think ESPN is to blame for why many people thought they signaled off sides. Look by the scores when the play is blown dead. It says USA: Off sides. While the guy clearly is not offsides, I never saw any other call either, so I was willing to believe it could be that.

Yeah, the ESPN folks are obviously not very adept when it comes to football. The referee's proper offside signal is one hand lifted straight up, and in this case he obviously called foul.

But to conclude this discussion, I too agree that this call was over the top, and that the goal should have been allowed, but the ref was not "absolutely" wrong, because football is not an exact science and there aren't many absolutes in it. Much is left for refs to interpret, and they often screw up, even the best of them. Take Roberto Rosetti, one of the best refs in the world right now (if not #1), he was total shite yesterday.

Slovakia - Paraguay is just starting... Are those empty stands I'm seeing? So sad...

BTW, is anyone else sharing my fascination with the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban? It's absolutely frakking beautiful! :adore:

Watching Paraguay right now. Hoping for a draw obviously, but I don't think Slovakia can do that. Still, finger crossed.

Italy vs. New Zealand in a couple of hours. Oh boy. Should be easy, but in football you never know. I'm betting 1:0 for Italy. Let's see how much I'm wrong this time.

Edit: ITALIA! ITALIA! ITALIA! :techman:

It's great to see ESPN's Sports Reporters, where to describe to disallowed goal, they are using words like "horrendous" and "hosed."

Great objective reporting.

Eh, Smeltz may have been offside (depending on which team's player headed the free kick ball), but Cannavaro may have also handballed off his thigh.

In any case: game on! :D

From where it stands right now, things are looking very good in Group F from my point of view. :D

I'm following most matches online, and when I loaded up the page and saw the current score, I really had to do a double check.

Looks like neither tournament outsider, neither New Zealand or North Korea, is taking that description lying down.

ETA: And Italy equalise. Wasn't completely unexpected, but can they do any better?

New Zealand on the back foot against a rampant Italy for much of the first half, certainly after their goal, but holding so far. A fascinating tie so far.

If we still have a team
Apparently, Evra had a fight with someone of the staff and one of the director of the team quit the FFF.
Right know they're saying that the players are on strike (or sort of) against the decision to fire Anelka.

And I thought that this couldn't be worse than the 1993 crisis

Oh dear. The French team are now apparently refusing to train.
I'm perplexed... Raymond Domenech almost single handedly destroyed the French national squad. This is France, one of the greatest football countries in the world, with an amazing tradition, and superb individual quality in the national team.

Why did French football federation (The FFF) allow this? Wasn't Euro 2008 alarming enough? Didn't they care enough to intervene in time? I mean, okay, Domenech will be replaced by Blanc after the WC, but did the FFF consciously sacrifice their entire World Cup campaign?

I mean, it was so obvious that this isn't working out. Domenech literally pissed on the French footbal tradition and the sentiments of fans by making a complete mockary of that whole Euro thing by proposing to his girlfriend (or whatever the hell he did, I can't remember) moments after his embarrassing failure. I mean, that kind of behavior is almost unheard of in football. For crying out loud, he was payed big money to manage the team, and he made a complete joke out of it. Why the hell was he not sacked right then, after that press conference?

What can I say, I'm a fan of French football, and it frustrates me to see France become the laughing stock of Europe, just because it's football federation failed to react in time and allowed a dilettante to fuck everything up.

To fire Domenech in 2008 was apparently too expensive for the FFF.
So basically, the team's performance at the World Cup (a once-in-every-4-years event) was less important to them than some cash...

How much did they pay him anyway? Is the FFF poor or something? :wtf:
