World Cup 2010 - South Africa Thread

Woeful, just woeful, and the people calling for Heskey to be dropped...WTF? Seriously if anyone needs dropping it's Rooney. He's constantly off the pace, never seems to get close to the ball....and it isn't Heskey's fault!

They should both be dropped IMO. Play Defoe and Crouch instead. Not a bad idea considering that they play together at Tottenham and have played together at Pompey as well. They should at least have an understanding.

And I do understand that keepers get lambasted for mistakes and have to be more reliable than outfield players, but would people have been calling for Terry to be dropped for that fucking awful backpass if James hadn't been quick enough and confident enough to rush out and get the ball?
Probably. Personally I wouldn't play both Terry AND Carragher anyway. Way too immobile a partnership. WE should play either Upson or Dawson.

James did alright but none of the others were without some fault at least. Lampard, if they ever need to replace Waldo in those Where's Waldo books, they can use him as he's almost completely anonymous in most England games. Gerrard, again, can't get the best out of him. Barry started ok but eventually everyone else's ineptitude infected his play. Lennon, one decent cross, not much else.

Personally I still fail to see how our most talented midfielder can't even get into the first XI when clearly we're lacking his skills.

Should have taken Adam Johnson and Walcott. Walcott's not great but he offers more than both SWP and Lennon IMO. I just find it amazing that we continue to play wingers who clearly can't cross a decent ball consistently. Even stranger when you have both Joe Cole and James Milner who can cross balls in for fun.

I get the impression that Capello will persist with a few players that really need to be dropped. It's no more obvious now than it was at the end of the US game, but Capello's almost at a point now where he'll continue to pick them just to prove a point.

I don't think that Heskey had a great game, but to shoulder the blame onto any one person would be wrong, as IMO, James aside I thought we were thoroughly wretched throughout.

Where's the team that qualified with ease, banging in goals for fun? They seem to have been replaced by a bunch of strangers who make Turnip Taylor's team of failures look like Brazil.

Anyway, not over yet but don't like the notion that the groupwinner/second could be drawn by lots if it came down to it!
To be honest, based on the two performances so far I don't think we deserve to go through. Both Slovenia and the US have shown far more desire in their two games. Our lot look like they're going through the motions.

This must be the first time where we could actually go out of the World Cup and it wouldn't bother me. They've bored me into ambivalence.

Oh and re that Rooney comment...way to win the fans Wayne, no matter how frustrated you are turning on the fans is the last thing you ever do, you'll never win.
Could be the final nail that. Key that we have the fans behind the team for the Slovenia game. As it was the fans would have made their feelings known tonight and then it would be business as usual come the Slovenia game. Now, I'm not so sure. I'm sure it was very frustrating for Wayne to hear the boos, but let's be fair Wayne, they're thoroughly deserved. Unlike you, they've had to pay their way to get over there and follow the team. I think they're perfectly entitled to air their grievance.

For me, there were worrying signs tonight. There's something not right with the players. You can see it in the body language and attitude. Personally, I didn't think that our performance against Algeria was any better than France's against Mexico.

Yeah there is something clearly wrong, and its hard to put your finger on what it is. Maybe its the formation but this is the same way we played during the qualification so it isnt like Capello has radically changed things.

It is hard to understand why Milner and Cole can't get to play. Frankly if Capello is wedded to 442 that's fine, but he needs to drop Lampard and move Gerrard across. Actually a midfield of Cole Gerrard Barry Milner would be a lot better than what we got last night. And yeah Crouch and Defoe would be an option. Trouble is would Capello have the guts to do it?

I've said for years that England won't do anything until we stop this notion that the best players have to play, fitting square pegs into round holes just to accomodate all of them.

Yes they're over paid primadonnas, but so are most players at the WC, yes they've had a hard season in the prem but so have many other players here, yes there's a lot of expectation but there is on other teams. I just don't get what our problem is. You have to worry about any team where your most attacking player is pretty much your right full back though.

As for Rooney. I've never been a huge fan of booing, I think on the whole it's counter productive, but after a game like that it was deserved, and as you say these were fans who've spent their hard earned money/time to travel and watch their team. Frankly I'm amazed Rooney hasn't come out and apologised, if he's not careful he'll find himself booed everywhere he goes in the PRem next season if he's not careful.

Got to drop...

Rooney, Lampard, Heskey for the next game and play...

Gerrard in middle, J.Cole on the left with Crouch/Defoe partnership.

Won't England go insane if Rooney is taken out of the line-up?

After that performance where Rooney could not do basic 101 footballing skills ie CONTROL THE BALL he would be well in his right to drop him. Capello earns £6 million per year to make the hard calls so Fabio make it.

I just heard the David James interview on 606 show for BBC Radio 5 Live last night after the game and its clear that not only does James not like Capello he very much dislikes his tactics especially the whole naming your team 5 minutes before the coach leaves.

David James oooozed sarcasm especially when told Fabio said it was pressure getting to the players and James said "he did" and you could tell he really wanted to say something else like maybe its you and your tactics.

Capello for me is losing the dressing room.

Roy Hodgson for manager :techman:

The Socceroos must have pissed off the refs before the World Cup...two harsh red cards in as many games. Good to see them stand up despite playing 2/3s with 10 men and keeping it to a draw and for most of it looking more like the side who would take out the win. In a reserve of last week the media will be praising Timmy and slamming Deans.

So, the qualifiers... Croatia - England 1:4 (autumn 2008), Theo Walcott hat-trick, the "mighty" Croats humiliated. Year after, Wembley, England - Croatia 5:1, the mighty Croats humiliated even harder. Then the Ukrainians "defeated" the mighty England and everyone assumes the English threw that game to kick Croatia out (which seemed kinda obvious at the time, because the Ukrainians sucked).

Then came the pre-World cup friendlies, and the Japanese kicked England's ass... Though they eventually ended up kicking their own asses by scoring two auto-goals thus blowing the 1-0 lead they held for the full 75 minutes or so...

So, the only logical conclusion would be that the English suck really bad... So how bad must we (the Croats) suck then?

BTW, I can't believe that Ghana failed to destroy the Aussies...

(I'm assuming it's a photoshop)
Yep. The first one is the original, I believe.

@Jono - I've just spoken to a friend of mine who is an experienced football referee, and he claims that the Kewell send off was completely justified.

Is that sarcasm? If you watch the play in motion, he's trying to pull the guy's arm off him, not hold it there.

Is that why the play was blown dead? Not an offsides?

Doesn't really matter, he's not allowed to do that either (though it's being done all the time). If the Slovenian player was indeed holding him (as it appears), then he should have dived, like every other experienced player would. He probably would have been awarded a penalty (or the yellow card ).

Hm, that was clearly not offside...

I know that, but most of the announcers originally assumed that was the reason. The thing is nobody could tell why there was a call.

And to say he should have dived is ridiculous. What if that wasn't called? Then he would have taken himself out of the play. It's the ref's job to monitor the play and call even those who aren't acting. Besides, there's always some pushing and shoving in the box. If it was called dead because he was trying to free himself from a hold, that's absolute bullshit. The Slovenian player went far beyond what is usually tolerated and the guy who did what everyone else does gets called for it?

That really isn't true. Just look at English Premiership. You wouldn't believe how much shit the players get away with there...

BTW...

The ref obviously isn't signaling offside there.

Still laughing? ;)

And two things regarding US vs Slovenia:
- I don't think the call was offside, because a) referees don't usually call offside because they don't have a good enough view on the action and b) the linesman usually waves his flag very energetically when he thinks it's offside (one of the few things they are actually good for sometimes)
- that photo doesn't prove anything. Contrary to popular opinion, photos can lie, especially when it's a snapshot taken from a dynamic scene

I'm not sure the Slovenian defenders commited a foul, but I certainly didn't see any Americans do anything illegal.
