World Cup 2010 - South Africa Thread

A very weak performance by France overall. No fight, little movement and hardly any dangerous shots. Mexico played well and deserve to advance to the next round but I don't think they'll get very far, given their weakness in front of the goal.

Very disappointing tournament for the French. Their ineptitude here makes me feel even worse for the Irish team and their fans.

On a related I hope we ban any fucker who tries to start the Vuzu crazy in any stadium here..

Some idiot brought one of those things to Yankee Stadium last not and got kicked out after he began tooting it.

I believe they're banned league-wide in the NHL, as well. Or, at the least, Scotiabank Place does here in Ottawa.

Great game by Mexico, incidentally. I'd love to see them go far, and I think I'll be cheering for them from here on out, but I agree that their defence could definitely hurt them in the long run.

I meant their offense, actually. There weren't that many dangerous shots on France's goal even in this game, and only one goal was a field goal. They didn't score against South Africa, at all. Usually, you don't get that many opportunities to score in the knock-out stage.

Apparently everyone here takes their World Cup viewing for granted:

Complete AP story here

JOHANNESBURG — Police say a South African man who wanted to watch a World Cup match instead of a religious program was beaten to death by his family in the northeastern part of the country.

David Makoeya, a 61-year-old man from the small village of Makweya, Limpopo province, fought with his wife and two children for the remote control on Sunday because he wanted to watch Germany play Australia in the World Cup. The others, however, wanted to watch a gospel show.

.....

Malefo said Makoeya got up to change the channel by hand after being refused the remote control and was attacked by his 68-year-old wife Francina and two children, 36-year-old son Collin and 23-year-old daughter Lebogang.

.....

^ Heh, yeah, that makes sense, too. I was thinking more along the lines of the number of corners and free kicks they handed to France. They were lucky that France never figured out how to do set pieces.

I didn't think they were too bad on the attack, myself, but I don't watch soccer as much as other sports, so I may not be the best judge.

I take suggestions for a good team to support now I'm free from every national engagement

Wow, that's a tragic story, Aragorn. To kill your own husband/father over the TV program. :(

They're not bad, but they'll face the best teams in the world and in the knock-out stage, everyone will try to be extra-tight in their defense. So, there won't be that many opportunities and Mexico seems to lack a goalgetter.

Now imagine how the Irish must feel right now...

They weren't ALLOWED to qualify, because FIFA didn't want a World Cup without one of the big ones (Brazil, Italy, Germany, Argentina, England, Spain and France)...

Such injustice...

Last time I used this av, I got a few inquiries whether I was her. :D

Fcuk me, that's almost enough to make me want to wish Germany well!

I think that's just about the greatest photo ever taken!

Great game for Mexico. Not so good for Les Bleus. France didn't deserve to be at these finals.

I'm glad they failed. Mexico and Uruguay both deserve to get through to the next round. They're both good teams, and the only French player I liked prior to this World Cup was Henry, which has changed a bit now.

This is kind of a repeat failure for France as in 2002. Well it will be if their South Africa match has them ending up goalless.

I suspect that Uruguay will top Group A now, which makes them a likely opponent for England in the quarters. That is, if we don't screw up our games against Algeria and Slovenia, and get past Ghana in the second round, as I think they could well come second in Group D.

Great win for Mexico. Don't think France is going to repeat runner up again this year. I had a coworker who was extremely happy when that first goal was scored, and then on the penalty Kick, the game was pretty much over.

Personally I'm gutted about France.

I saw them as a nice meal ticket into the SFs.

Now we might actually have to play a decent game against either Uruguay or Mexico instead......!

On a serious note I hope Fabio gets the formation/tactics right tonight.

1. Drop Green
2. Don't play Carragher AND Terry (too immobile)
3. Don't push Gerrard out to the left
4. Play Joe Cole on the left
5. Play Gerrard just behind Rooney, dropping Heskey

Why is it that I think that none of these will come to pass by kick off?

To be honest I hope he does drop Green now, if only because if he was going to support him and say he was retaining him he should have done it already. James or Hart though? I'd be tempted to go Hart, cos you just know James will play well for 89 minutes then flap at a corner or something...

I think we'll win quite comfortably tonight, poor results for Brazil, Italy, Spain, France etc have probably taken a bit of pressure off us. Am assuming the best result for us is a slovenia USA draw this afternoon

The result we least want is a USA win, because then we're not in control of who comes top, and it will be decided on goal difference. (I'm assuming that everyone will beat Algeria by a comfortable margin)

A Slovenia win + an England win tonight would mean that we'd have to beat Slovenia by any result to come top, but a draw would leave us facing Germany next round and a loss could see us out altogether, if USA annihilate Algeria by enough.

Yes, a draw would be best, because then it means going into the final round, the scores would be:

England 4
Slovenia 4
USA 2
Algeria 0

And likely to end up as:

England 7
USA 5
Slovenia 4
Algeria 0

No easy games for most part at this WC but England should win though we won't keep a clean sheet IMO. 2-1 or 3-1 with Rooney hopefully playing somewhat a role of a FLAMING FORWARD/STRIKER  With France all but out it makes the run in to the semi finals very do-able as long as we win our group.

I'd play Hart in goal, although to be fair, I can't remember the last cockup that James made for England now, certainly none to the magnitude of Robinson's, Carson's or Green's.

Best result for us from the US vs Slovenia game is a draw, but failing that I'd be happy enough should Slovenia win. That coupled with us beating Algeria would all but qualify us tonight.

I really don't mind if we end up playing Germany sooner rather than later. I think we'd do them to be honest, besides you have to play the better sides sooner or later.

Wonder if Germany will repeat Argentina's experience of 4 years ago, start off by thrashing someone, coasting through your group and then falling at your first tough game.
