Did anyone else notice this? Vader in STXI

At least I'm not the only one. My wife and I both listened to it several times. And it sounded like "Vader" to both of us. Of course, we could be wrong. There was a lot of background noise that could have obscured the pronunciation. But I'll stick to what I heard.

I just naturally assumed it was another of the many Star Wars references JJA saw fit to sprinkle all over his new Star Trek movie.

Simply because, in my opinion, there is waaaay too much Star Wars in this movie. If I wanted to watch Star Wars, I would pop a Star Wars DVD into the player and watch it. I don't care for that much Star Wars in my Star Trek. It ruins the flavor.

Let's see what I can remember. Now this goes deeper than just an occasional "easter egg" or "in-joke". And don't get me wrong, I enjoy a little in-joke every now and again just as much as the next guy. I particularly liked the Firefly in the BSG mini-series. However, there's a difference between an occasional in-joke and scattering the stuff all over the movie. If the "Vader" reference had been one of only two SW references in STXI, I would have no problem with it. But STXI has SW all-frakkin-over it. From "Vader", to Delta Hoth and that "there's always a bigger fish" scene, to the hyperdrive/warp effect, to Keesner/Jar-Jar, to the Death Star/Spacedock, to the Falcon dropping out of hyperdrive at Alderaan scene with the Abramsprise and the debris field, to Naboo blaster sound effects for Kirk and Spock's phasers on the Narada, to R2D2 floating by in the debris field, to the obvious Star Wars-like sound effects for the shuttles and Jellyfish, and I can go on and on and on. Just a little in-joke would have been fine. But JJA literally made STXI his version of Star Wars. I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't care for too much Star Wars in my Star Trek. It ruins the flavor.

I'm sorry, but all that stuff you listed is completely subjective (except for R2D2, obviously). I for one didn't think of Star Wars with any of those examples you posted. For example, by your logic, Rura Penthe in The Undiscovered Country was a ripoff of Hoth (which it wasn't), for the simple fact that it was an ice planet. And when the Enterprise-D dropped out of warp into the Wolf 359 debris field in "BoBW," was that a Star Wars reference too?

I thought it was "Bader," perhaps a nod to the late Hilary J. Bader who was a writer on TNG (and did some excellent work on The New Batman/Superman Adventures). Although Chakoteya's transcript site renders it "Vader."

It sounds to me like “Bader.”

No. At the time of TUC, the movie's director didn't frequently tell the media that he was a Star Wars fan and didn't like Star Trek (I'll find the quote later). So there was no reason to even consider Rura Penthe as analogous to Hoth.

Also, if they had given the planet a different name, the comparison to Hoth probably wouldn't have ever come up. Had the "there's always a bigger fish" scene not happened, maybe the comparison wouldn't have come up either. Two SW references in the same scene is a bit much.

And when the Enterprise-D dropped out of warp into the Wolf 359 debris field in "BoBW," was that a Star Wars reference too?

Ummm. No. They knew there was a debris field there. The Enterprise-D actually had sensors that worked.

In the case of Vulcan/Alderaan, they had no idea they were going to drop out of warp in a debris field, as Han had no idea he was dropping out of hyperspace into and asteroid field.

IIRC Abrams said he was more of a SW than a ST fan. He NEVER said he didn't like Star Trek. And since ILM did a significant amount of SFX for much of Star Trek over the last couple of decades, I don't really see the big deal, but then I am not trying to make a big deal out of virtually nothing like some people who seem content to post just to annoy fans of the movie.

I'm not seeing a lot of those supposed Star Wars references. "I hope you know what you're doing" and "punch it" strike me as much more direct quotes to Lucas' film.

If the sound effects strike you as similar to Star Wars, for example, it's probably due to two reasons: (1) Lucas' film borrowing from the original television show or (2) Ben Burtt doing sound work on both projects.

ST:TMP saluted both Darth Vader and Miss Piggy in images of V'ger architecture.

In ST III, McCoy visits the "Star Wars Bar" in San Francisco. IIRC, they made a sign for it too, but it wasn't shown in the movie.
