How is there no Red Dead Redemption thread here???

Man I don't know why I'm struggling with this duel thing. I finally did the mission over in Mexico that forces you into a duel and after a couple tries, I thought I had the mechanics down. But as soon as I went back to the random encounters, I started getting nailed left and right.

I love this game, but this dueling is just not my thing I guess. It's the only part of the game that I really strugle with. (Not saying I'm good, just saying most stuff I've been able to catch on to pretty quickly and usually can do ok.)

Yeah, I've lost my random encounters as well. I got real good with the duels from cheating at poker, shooting guns out of their hands and such, but when a guy called me out on the street, he blew me away. I did everything the same way, got my shots off first, but he still killed me, and I don't understand why.

most of the time I come across assholes that like to player kill for no reason.

Worst of all, there's no lasso! :(
If the griefing is widespread now (and, granted, it can get pretty hilarious; one day, we came across a group of guys trying to do the minecart mission, and we kept killing them and pushing the minecart back to the beginning), imagine how bad it would be if some goon could lasso you, hogtie you up and leave you to die?
Obviously the hogtie should be right out for playable characters, but using the lasso to cause someone to trip, or dragging them behind your horse for a couple of seconds, would be okay. The lasso would be useful when doing the hunting challenges, especially since they force you to kill some of the animals with a knife. I spent two minutes chasing a bear whereas in single player I could just whip out the lasso to make it stop.

Still, the fundamental problem remains that there's not enough to do in free roam and that leads to people killing one another. I was showing the game to someone yesterday and I opted to go online because my single player save had a huge spoiler, and I warned him that the first person I'd meet would kill me. Turns out I was wrong, the first guy I met merely shot at me but I got away, it was the second guy that killed me.

. . . but he still killed me, and I don't understand why.

That's me exactly, I just can't seem to grasp the mechanics of what I'm supposed to do to beat the random encounter challenges.

Oh well, I'm not a "completist" anyway, I NEVER strive to get 100% of a game just because I won't waste time on stuff that I don't enjoy. Guess this is going to be one of those things. Plenty of other stuff to do.

Rockstar has greatly improved on the GTA manner of playing and I hope the next game in that series will follow this game more in style and game design. This is easly one of the best "sandbox" games I've played in a long time, if not ever. (Of course I'm predisposed to like Westerns so I'm biased.)

I still will argue with you guys however, about the value and enjoyment of starting a mission and having to ride for a long distance before you actually get to do anything. Last night I had a mission and there was no dialogue, no enemies, nothing, just a long pointless ride to get from the mission start cutscene to the actual mission start. I know several of you said you like this feature, but I seriously don't get it. It's not like you don't have ample opportunity to ride around and explore the countryside.

100% completion has nothing to do with the random shootouts.

You can skip the cut scenes by pressing "A" on the XBox 360.

I don't want to skip cut scenes, because they contain vital information. However, the LONG rides with AIs and the inane conversations I can do without.

There are 2 or 3 that can be skipped as nothing is said, they are pretty easy to spot because the conversation ends pretty quickly.

That's good to know but I still doubt that I get 100%. Good info to know nevertheless. Thanks.

It's not the cutscenes I'm talking about. See below.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. Funny that Kail described it exactly as I did, i.e. "long rides and inane conversations." The only time you can skip them is when you're riding shotgun on a wagon. Otherwise you're forced to endure it. And in the example I gave, there wasn't even any conversation, it was just a long ride through the desert. And I simply don't understand why Rockstar forces us to do that. They do the same thing in GTA. I just don't get it.

EDIT TO ADD: To make it even more strange IMHO, they DO allow you to skip the cutscenes which as Kail says have "vital" information. So you can skip actually story points, but you can't skip non-important "inane" conversations. I just find it :wtf::confused:

To be more clear as I did say "skip the cut scenes", you can in fact skip the non-conversation wagon rides to a location, Just hit "A".
John just says he is going to take a nap and to wake him up when you're there.

Here is a guide for getting everything for the 100% completion.

It's really not that hard, by the time I completed the game I had 4-5 various wanted posters to collect on and a few pieces of the outfits to get.

I'm hoping this comes out for the PC. Usually I prefer the PC versions of open games like this, primarily for the control scheme, but also because Rockstar usually leaves easily editable configuration files for users to toy with. Sounds interesting, but I guess I'll have to keep waiting.

Finally opened up the north part of this map last night. Spent all night in Tall Trees hunting bears, elk, and bighorn. I've discovered bears aren't too bad if you equip the buffalo rifle and aim right between they eyes (thank God for deadeye). Now killing the bear with a knife, yeah that was a barrel of fun. NOT! Finally did it though.

I also discovered it's not a good idea to shoot a beaver with a buffalo rifle.

When do I get to the Tall trees and Blackwater? I'm guessing I must finish in Mexico first?

Yes, that's correct. And opens up bear hunting, which is whole new ballgame. Once you get up there, I have these words of advice for you. Equip the buffalo rifle.

I think I"ve been playing this game too much. I was driving down the road today and saw a clump of wildflowers along the road, and I found myself wanting to pull over and pick it so I could take it and sell it.

I had a similar reaction to seeing birds flying around and wanting to shoot them and collect feathers. The sad part is I'm not kidding in any way, shape or form. :wtf:

I saw a white horse while driving today and thought it was a rare Hungarian half-breed and I should try to break it. It freaked me out a little, it just stood there at the wall staring into space. I may have imagined it. I hope my uncle doesn't kill me tonight. :scream:

I just finished the storyline. One word to sum up this game: Awesome!

Agreed! I finished this week also. Am now hunting for the elusive '100% unlocked' trophy. All I have to do is:

Finish the Hunting challenges.
Finish the Bounty Hunting challenges.

and I am home free!
