Was Picard the reason troi wore the stupid bunny suits?

:techman:

Skirt uniform and regular uniform were much better than these other suits. I'm sure I will be lynched now, but a variation to the skirt uniform would have been to add pants (since it's not really a skirt anyway, it's just a long top). Somehow that would have looked closer to the TWOK uniforms, and it makes more sense not to beam down to some strange planet with bare legs.

I'm sorry, but when she wears something like that and stands next to another woman who's wearing a professional outfit, it just makes her look like a bimbo.

So dresses make women look like bimbos????????

If she was wearing a dress she wouldn't look like a bimbo. However, that isn't a dress. It's a cheerleader outfit being worn by someone who's supposed to be a mental health professional.

If I ever went in to see a shrink and she was dressed like that, I simply couldn't take her seriously.

In the 20th/21st century, perhaps.

Remember, miniskirts worn by female officers wasn't exactly a new thing.

Uhura, anyone? Did anyone on the Enterprise question her professionalism merely because of what she wore?

No-one's mentioned how uncomfortable Troi looked sitting in her chair at Picard's left during "Farpoint".

Legs...tightly...together!

I don't question the character's professionalism, and I don't question Troi's professionalism as a character. But I think it was a great disservice to the women of TOS to put them in those mini-skirts.

It was done simply to make them sexy. IMHO, women don't need mini-skirts or catsuits in order to be sexy.

So what universe are we going with?

The real-world explanation which is yours and which I don't deny is that they were there to make her look sexy. Yep, that's right.

However, the thread deals with the situation as if what we see is the reality by asking if it's Picard who put her in the sexy uniforms.

Therefore, I was approaching it with the same frame of mind. IN-TREK, obviously nobody has a problem with the sexuality of the female officers. Which means I find it highly unlikely Picard put her in the 'bunny suit'.

But to bring in real-world explanations: Jellico's line is likely a response to people who had become dogged detractors of her sexier outfits. Which in my opinion was ridiculous. Stick with your guns.

I so agree-- it was a disservice, however... in 1966, wearing a miniskirt made you modern. It indicated not just sexiness, but liberation.

My favorite moment in all of TNG: Captain Jellico telling Deanna Troi to put on a uniform. WHAT A RELIEF.

Indeed it was. People forget about that sometimes. Also, they call miniskirts sexist and at the same time forget about the point that is was black woman in an important position in the command center of the ship in a TV show from the 1960s.

From an IN-TREK perspective, I guess it does make sense that Picard told her to wear whatever made her comfortable. But, I still don't see how that would make her patients comfortable, which should have been foremost in her mind.

Ah, but who are we to say what's sexy/not sexy to 24th century humanity? Maybe her dress was entirely modest!

^ I suppose that's possible.

However, from the real-world perspective, I still think she's looks much sexier in the regular uniform. ;)

^Wow, everything's got a Wikipedia page nowadays

Can anyone else picture Data reciting that verbaitim to an oblivious Picard, Riker or Troi?
