Anyone else think Brent Spiner is annoying?

otherjr

Lieutenant Junior Grade
Ive seen a bunch of interviews and stuff on youtube, and he just seems like a bit of a tool to me. Then I remember hearing that it was him who pushed for Data's emotion chip so he could do more acting, and it was him who co-wrote Nemesis (the one with a ton of Data in), and it all sort of seems pretty likely.

Anyone else thing that about Brent Spiner.

He's funny, and I'm glad he got to be a bit more versatile than just the emotionless Data. I particularly like him as Arik Soong on Enterprise.

I can't say I'm a huge fan of Spiner's.

He reminds me of that kid in drama class who always had to be hamming it up and all of his "Zap!" interuptions involved potty or sex humor. I had one of those in my class. Douche.

He did good with Data, okay with Lore and he was good as Soong but there's other times where he gets to "expand" where it's just like... "Really, Brent? Really?!" most notably in "Masks" and possibly in "Fistfull of Datas" as well.

And the bullshit in "Generations" was just so far past the line that if it had dialed it back to simply being "absurd" it'd be a vast improvement and then there's NEM. Sigh. :shakes head:

He acted good as Data, I'll give him that. He certainly has moments in FC (maybe Frakes was able to stand some ground or coach him in the right direction) but whenever he's let off his leash he goes so far out into left field he pretty much ends up on the moon.

There's times I've just yelled at my TV at Brent "DIAL IT DOWN!"

Good as Data, anyother time, for the most part, "meh."

Spiner unleashed? Kick me in the head.

I never had any issue with him as Data & Worf were my two fav TNG characters anyways.

Sure at times some of the things he'd do as Data would give you a head shake, but every character eventually ended up giving you those moments over one thing or another.

^ You mean the class clown?

I was one of them, but that mostly had to due with the school I was in sucking all holy hell and everybody else made life crap.... so I'd make the best of the situation even if it pissed the rest of the class off..... why would I care anyways?

But it could have been worse.... you could have been stuck with Jim Carry playing Data.... now there's a head scratcher. :P

Then you'd have to say the same for Patrick Stewart. Another guy who really needed to be told to dial it down on the action hero/rewriting stuff for himself bent.

I've never met the man, so I find him about as annoying as he finds me. Not at all.

As far as his on-screen work goes, there were episodes where he hammed it up a bit too much for my taste, but he had a pretty tough job--playing an android. When he had to--The Most Toys, Brothers (sequence where he steals the ship), Conundrum--he really stepped it up. In a good way. The ENT Arik Soong episodes, great too, although Spiner in the old man makeup with the Mark Twain accent in TNG was, IMHO, not good.

And I loved his performance as the cruise director in Lost at Sea. Funny stuff.

I've seen a few clips of him during conventions (or something like that) and he does seem rather annoying. He seems to have that super extroverted personality that's always joking or trying to get a laugh out of people. There's nothing wrong with that, but I do find it kinda grating on my nerves. I'd love to have a small chat with the man, but let's just say I wouldn't want to get stuck in an elevator with him.

he comes across as a genuinely funny guy, and probably would have made a good stand up comedian if acting didn't turn out well

From watching a lot of the conventions on Youtube, with the TNG cast in it, most seem like funny people. Dorn, Frakes, Sir Patrick Stewart, Sirtis, McFadden, Burton, you name it.

he also is one of the better actors in TNG. He played Data, Lore and Soong well in Brothers, and all had distinct personalities and characteristics.

^^ that's great!
I remember watching Night Court every Thursday even before TNG started and it was after the first season was done that I somehow realized that Data and Bob Wheeler were both Brent Spiner. Blew my mind!

I also loved both shows, but I never made the connection. I can be thick like that. :alienblush: It wasn't until someone on LiveJournal linked to this video about a year ago that I finally made the connection. Duh!

I can understand how he can rub some people up the wrong way, but more often than not, I find his comments to be quite witty and intelligent.
