Complete score released

Does iTunes usually carry Varese's Soundtrack Collector's line of CDs? I thought these things generally were limited to the number pressed, and that was it.

Either way, I prefer physical media, so I've ordered this. I need to pick up the TWOK deluxe edition at some point, too, but it's not a limited release so I can wait.

This will not be on iTunes, only the 5000 physical CDs.

This is always the case with the Soundtrack Club limited releases.

I always prefer the tangible (another word for physical) mediums. If I lose my music on my computer's library and my devices don't have the songs, I'm screwed. With my CD collection, it's a genuine backup. Two sources available at the same time.

As long as you keep your computer and iPod synced at all times, that's no big deal. If your HD gets wiped and you have to sync everything back to it, iTunes will even do that for you (at least for store-purchased songs). And for those songs that you ripped, there's plenty of utilities to get songs off an iPod and back into the computer.

Mildly disappointed that the expanded soundtrack isn't on iTunes but that's the risk I ran for going to iTunes-only.

Where's the "risk?" For those albums (like this one) that are released in physical form only, you can still order them and rip them into iTunes. Then, if you're completely going to stay "iTunes only," throw the discs out (;)) and keep syncing up with your iPod. And yeah, the programs to get tunes off my iPod have been helpful in the past, but there's really no substitute for having all my original CDs handy.

I was underwhelmed by this score. The composer overuses his "main theme" in virtually the same orchestration. This gives the film little depth or texture musically.

That's Giacchino's style: a thousand variations on a handful of themes (James Horner's music is like that too). Take the score he did for the Medal of Honor games, for example; the same four themes reflected in about three dozen tracks on three different productions.

Mr. Laser Beam, as has been explained, the album is readily available, again, from reputable and trustworthy vendors. There is absolutely no logical reason you can't get this album. If you choose to go "iTunes-only" for your music collection, that's great. But it means you won't get this album because it's not available through that venue.

That said, I just ordered my copy as the listing on Varese Sarabande's website indicates fewer than 2500 copies of this album are left for sale.

Gotta love that Trekkie nerd completism!

where's Awasoruk Jam?

Someone put a link here to a downloadable file about a year ago. It's very short. And it's spelled "Awadoruk Jam" by Cyrano Jones (aka JJ Abrams himself) in some places.

It's "Kurosawa" backwards - and a tribute to the Japanese director that greatly influenced George Lucas for "Star Wars" Episode 4.

In retrospect, I'm sure this new release has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that Giacchino just happened to also win the Oscar for Best Motion Picture Score this year. Nope, not a thing to do with it at all.

If that was the case, don't you think Up would have had a CD release? That one is download only.

Neil

I'll take Varese at their word when they say that they decided to put it out after realizing there's a market for it.

Now this is good news. I just looked at the running time for each track on the original soundtrack and compared them to the running time of the same tracks presented on this soundtrack, and there are notable differences.

- Star Trek (Original release was 1:01 vs 2:26 on the new one)
- Enterprising Young Men (2:40 vs 3:05)

There are some with just a few seconds in difference, but these running time comparisons may indicate that we’ll be getting these said tracks as they were heard directly from the film instead, which would be great especially for the “Nero Fiddles, Narada Burns” track.

Sweet. Thanks for actually looking into that. I'm glad it's not just the same tracks ported over. It makes the price a little more palatable.

Actually, I think they simply appended some unreleased short form cues in some areas.

For instance, Enterprising Young Men is longer than the OST, and the next cues are Flying Into a Trphlthdl and Nero Sighted, which are the cues for Kirk running through the ship to find uhura, Doctor in tow to confirm that the ship was Romulan, then the cue after they navigated the wreckage above Vulcan and were shot at by the Narada respectively.

In the movie, there was a brief cue as the Enterprise jumps to Warp after the External Inertial Dampeners were disengaged, and Kirk and McCoy enter Sickbay. This is about right for the extra length.

So, the question is, should I hold onto the original soundtrack or not once this comes in the mail?

I'd say hold onto it, and based on the contents of the DE, pass it on if the DE contains all the music from the OST.

I suspect the OST won't be played much once the DE arrives, but I'm keeping the OST due to the fact that it was signed by Michael Giacchino.

So the score is supposed to be shipping this week...I've not had a chance to order it but am going to try and pick one up tomorrow if possible. I think it's awesome the tracks are all in chronological order of the film.
