Guillermo del Toro exits "The Hobbit"

Gee maybe if they weren't making a money grab for two films (oh I'm sorry, it's all for the integrity of the story in the ROTK appendices    ) it wouldn't take so long to make them.

Fraser's quite a good actor, actually. See "The Quiet American", "Extraordinary Measures", etc.

Jackson is too busy to direct. His agent gave these comments.

"Peter has and has had obligations and commitments to other films that would make it impossible for him to direct The Hobbit at this time, even if it was offered, which it hasn't been," Kamins told me. "I've been quietly working on setting up a film for him to direct while Guillermo would have been directing The Hobbit. What you saw in their respective statements must be taken at face value. All of that said, Peter and Fran's commitment to The Hobbit is total and they will do everything necessary to protect the franchise and the investment made by New Line, Warners and MGM."

MGM has delayed Bond 23 and probably the Hobbit now. What a mess.

It's unfortunate for fans of the source material who wanted to see del Toro's take on it. But honestly, del Toro has a long list of potential projects floating around the internet and almost all of them interest me a lot more than The Hobbit, which sounds like it would have (and kind of already has) eaten up a whole lot of the director's time. So from my perspective, I'm just interested in seeing what it is he moves on to next.

Same. As a del Toro fan, I'm more excited by this news than disappointed by it. Having him work three years on these films is one thing, but six years would have been too much.

This is going to sound crazy -- and will likely never happen -- but I'd love for Chris Bouchard to direct it. He directed the 30 minute fanfilm The Hunt for Gollum, and before you guys roll your eyes at me, I would highly suggest you check out the film before you pass judgment, since it was a hugely terrific film even by fanfilm standards.

It was definitely the most professional and story and character-driven fanfilm I have seen to date.

Well, fuck. This is seriously disappointing. The only reason I didn't have a problem with Jackson not directing was the decision to hire del Toro, who, as others have already stated, felt like a perfect match.

And as long as we're making ridiculous replacement suggestions, might I throw Terry Gilliam's name into the hat?

Sylvester Stallone as director?

Bilbo -- Jet Li
Gandalf -- Chuck Norris
Thorin -- Steven Seagal
Smaug -- Arnold Schwarzenegger (voice)
Elrond -- Bruce Willis
Gollum -- Jackie Chan
Beorn -- Jason Statham
Bard -- Dolph Lundgren

Being 'flabbergasted' (first time I ever used this word) over the choices of directors, I actually thought of someone who might be able to handle the fantasy aspects....especially as--IMO--he has had a good track record with films, including 'Stardust' and 'Kick-Ass'....

That person is: Matthew Vaughn....;)
