Missed Oppertunities in TOS

What didn't they do during TOS that they should have? What do you regret never seeing in the orginal series?

Me first:

We never learnt much about the crew
TOS was always about the mission, but it would have been nice to learn a little about the people on it along the way. Why did Kirk, Scotty, Uhura and Sulu join Starfleet? What about McCoy's divorce? Why is a guy who dislikes technology on a spaceship anyway?
Some of these were answered in Star Trek XI, and the rest in older novels and comics, but it would have been neat to see what the original showrunners would have come up with.
It would have been cool (in "Obsession" and others) to see a flashback or two to the TOS crew's younger days too.

Other Federation ships
During TOS we only saw Consitution-class ships. Franz Joseph later came up with some neat kitbash designs that would have been easy to make using old Enterprise model parts. If an AMT model could pass for the USS Constellation, one could have been rearranged for a cameo.

I agree, it would've been cool to delve into the lives and history of the characters a bit more. It would definitely have been nice to see some other ship designs as well. It is unfortunate that they had such a limited budget for effects and the like.

I also would have liked to have seen some more backstory, in general. More details and explanations about the Federation, it's inner workings, and perhaps more about the major member races. Some more details about history of their universe could have proved interesting and perhaps made it easier for later shows and ventures to be a bit more manageable. It would also have proved interesting if we got see a few episodes about earth of that era.

Yep. I'd like to have seen that.

I'd like to have seen the secondary characters featured a bit more. And, yes, some different Starfleet designs. Also some more of the Enterprise interior.

My favourite Trek novel. I still would have liked to see him pen a TOS episode.

It would have been nice to see more of the Federation, and not just from Starfleet's POV. Of course, that can be said of ALL Treks.
The inner workings of another ship would have been interesting. Perhaps Sulu or Chekov got transferred, and following them to their new assignment.
In some ways we did get that with O'Brien and Worf.

Also, as has been mentioned before, I'd have loved to have seen McCoy's daughter, and really explored that dynamic of him as a father, and what would have happened when she met Kirk. I know it was planned to some degree at one point. They really dropped the ball there.

Was there any network drama doing character development shows back then? ST was action with whatever cerebrality TPTB could throw in.

There's so much I could ask for, I don't know where to start. More secondary characters with a bit more to do, the Riley, M'Benga types. And keep the serious tone of pre-Coon S1.

The biggest missed opportunity I can think of is the lack of a fourth season. But I blame NBC for that, not the writers.

I always wanted to see other classes of Starfleet ships, I LOVED the Miranda the first time I saw it in Star Trek II. A few more crews as well as a little more insight into Sulu, Uhuru and Chekov.

Joanna McCoy would've been nice to see as well. I also wanted as a kid to see the Gorn appear again, to sort of let us know how the negotiations went after the Cestus III incident.

The Romulans needed to be given more development to gain their own unique identity, like the Vulcans, Klingons and Cardassians eventually got.

youre right about the klingons, they have been in 5 or 6 at least, but I only like Kor, Kang, and Koloth anyway so I guess I only counted them

Be interesting to watch old episodes and see the Gorns as the semi-regular villains of the week.

It's been mentioned in other threads before and I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet. Saucer separation of a starship from its secondary hull. It didn't necessarily have to be the Enterprise, nor during its era. It could have been shown to occur during Capt. Pike's era. A rescue mission episode where the Enterprise tries to rescue a starship crew that has been stranded on a planet for a few years.

I would have also liked to have seen more episodes with the established aliens, the Gorn, Andorians, Tellarites, Klingons, and Romulans.

As has already been mentioned, I would have liked to have seen other types of starships (Scout, Destroyer, Tug, Light Cruiser, Heavy Cruiser, Dreadnought) for each of the races (Federation, Klingon, Romulan, etc) such as the ones Franz Joseph (Schnaubelt) created and Star Fleet Battles board game created.

I'd loved to have seen some other ship classes, not just the Connies. I'd have loved a TOS era Miranda class, for example.

I'd like to see Gorns once or twice, and see how Kirk's sparing the one helped develop relations. I THINK they're Fed allies in the Destiny trilogy of novels.

Both Genes in charge of season 3. I mean, do "And the Children Shall Lead", "This Way to Eden", and "Spock;s Brain" turn out so bad if they are there? Do they even get made?
