Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

Now THAT was an interesting countdown.

Counting down to zero sure was interesting. It feels to me like it is really over, and that there will be no movie.

I am also somewhat dissapointed that the killing spree didn't continue. Killing Suvarov and Logan at the same time would have been better.

But the final conversation definitely was beutiful.

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

A few more thoughts about the finale that I didn't put down in my earlier post....

I really thought Cherry Jones did a great job as Taylor last night, coming back to her roots. But perhaps my favorite scene last night was when she went total dark side on President Hassan. I was expecting her eyes to turn orange-yellow. I also liked when Logan told Jason he did well. I was hoping he would pause and add, "My young apprentice" or something to that effect.

We've seen Jack hunted before, but I think that scenario is appropriate. Jack is a hero who does monstrous things. He can't really be embraced publicly, and I don't think he wants to be. He's a tool in a sense, and he understands that once his usefulness is over, he becomes a liability. That's sort of how I see it. I also think the hunting Jack scenario helps set up any potential movie, plus we still aren't sure about Logan's ultimate fate or Suvarov.

I also enjoyed the final Jack-Chloe scene. I didn't need a big closure moment for the show. Just as long as its two most enduring characters shared a moment, I was good with that.

Earlier in the season 24 just felt so tired to me, I was ready for it to go, but now that its been canceled, and the era is over I realize I will miss it. I'm still not too hype about a movie though. The show covered so much territory, there's not much more I think they can tell. I guess making it all about Jack and the hunt for him is perhaps the best way they can come up with something for a movie. However, I think the 24 movie should've came years ago, when the show was at its height. I wonder how much interest a movie can gin up now.

About the series itself....

My favorite President was David Palmer. Followed by Logan and Taylor.

Worst President was Wayne Palmer. Sure, Keeler was a cipher and there wasn't much done with Daniels, but I thought they wrote Wayne Palmer as way too indecisive. If he was supposed to be a Bobby Kennedy that doesn't work. I wish that Regina King, Palmer's sister, had been President instead.

My favorite villains were Logan and Sherry Palmer. Both were arch manipulators and I loved every scene they were in. Other villains I liked: Henderson (Peter Weller is awesome). That Chinese official was good. The Drazen guys weren't bad either. I also liked Marwan. Juma and Dubaku were alright.

Worst villains: Bauer family (by that I mean the dad and brother), Peter Kingsley didn't work for me for some reason. I also didn't care for Julian Sands in Season Five. The Mexican drug runners weren't high on my list either.

Jack's best lady: I liked Aubrey best. They were a nice contrast. I don't think we got enough of Terri and Jack actually together to get a real sense of their relationship. I was liking Jack and Nina, but we all know how that turned out.

Best death: Perhaps because they were so tragic, the deaths of Terri, Rene, Michelle, Edgar, and President Palmer. The killing of Ryan Chappelle was totally unexpected. I really thought Jack was going to find a way to get out of that. I also liked George Mason's sacrifice. He went from ass hole to hero.

Best killing: I liked the killing spree at the end of Season 8. I also liked how Jack executed Nina Myers. It was completely cold. And Jack's killing spree at the beginning of Season 5 was pretty good too.

Worst death: Sherry Palmer. It was an awkward way to end her storyline. I would rather she went to prison so they could bring her back Hannibal Lecter-style if need be.

Worst killing: Curtis. Totally unnecessary, and just done to be 'shocking'. Jack could've wounded the man in the shoulder, leg, or something.

Jack's Best Partner: Chloe. Followed by Renee and Curtis. Would've loved to see more with Rick Schroeder though. He had potential. The guy who cut his hand off ultimately won me over. Freddie Prinze, Jr. wasn't all that bad either.

Best Mole: Nina Myers.

Best CTU director: Buchanan.

Worst CTU director: Hastings, or Samwise. I can't forgive Samwise for losing his ID card.

Ass Hole that got away from Jack's justice: C. Thomas Howell, Kim's bitchy boyfriend, in Season 6 I think. And Presidents Suvarov and Logan, but I think Logan's 'end' was appropriate, and Jack just couldn't ice the Russian President like that. He pulled back, putting the nation first, which is totally in keeping with Jack's character.

Wasted characters: Naked Mandy. Wish more had been done with her. I was hoping she would be in the van that was escorting Jack at the end or that she would be waiting for them. Regina King's character. There were a lot of character's that didn't go anywhere. Aisha Tyler was another one.

Characters that should've came back: The Arab female agent from Season 6 (?). She was too hot to leave for just one season. Also, Rick Schroeder.

Jack's most improbable feat: There were many, but I still can't get over him beating heroin in one day.

The show's most improbable feat (s): Detonating two nukes on U.S. soil.

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

Small note: Logan is not dead. He is presumed to have suffered some brain damage, but you know how things have gone with this series.........

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

So maybe Logan can be in the same long-term care facility as President Wayne Palmer.

Two vegetable Presidents...

I was going to do one of these lists, but Darkush, you list really nailed it all. I thought they pretty much jumped the shark with Jack's brother/father. In fact, I didn't even watch the last four episodes of that season because it was just so badly written. I will see them with in the week because we are starting season six tomorrow...

I just wish Tony would have showed up, and give his life while saving Jack. But I am really glad Tony will show up in the movie version. My son and I see Tony to Jack as Batman is to Superman.

Anyway, great list..and I totally endorse this list...

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

I haven't watched "24" for long but even I know Hastings was wasted.

He's useless in the beginning then when he's useful he has to leave.

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

It's all been a dream?

Didn't JR supposedly shoot himself, but really like his coke exploded in his fridge or something?

JR was goaded into, we are led to believe, shooting himself in the head after a drunken night alone at Southfork, by an apparition initially seeming to be an angel but who later is revealed to be the devil. Just as Bobby comes home, he hears a gunshot ring out. He races upstairs and bursts in to JR's room, horrified at what he sees. The last line of the series was Bobby's: "Oh my God!"

It wasn't till five years later when JR returned that Bobby revealed that the last time he saw JR, he'd been drunk one night, having shot the mirror and babbling something about life being better if he'd never been born.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I thought it was.

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

Who's "Aubrey." Jack's never met anyone named Aubrey.

He was in a relationship with someone named Audrey once, but...

;)

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

Hmmm...who was Jack Bauer's hottest babe??? Terry..Kate...Audrey...Renee, maybe someone else I am forgetting? Nina Meyers (I almost threw-up listing her!!!)

Someone told me that the actresses who played Nina and Terry (who was Kira's mom, right?) once had a lesbian scene in a movie. I have never explored that rumor, is it true?

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

Great poll..I went with Season One as the best. My family and I started rewatching 24 about a month and half ago, and are in season 6.

What I liked about Season one was the slow way the plot was rolled out, and the Nina twist at the end. Seasons two-three-Four were emotional roller coasters..

I think the toughest scene to watch? When Jack is forced to kill Ryan Chappell. And Chappell was a jackass, as you all recall. But having to watch Jack do that to Ryan was very tough to watch...

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

There's one big idiosyncrasy in last night's finale.

JACK BAUER DIDN'T KILL A DAMN THING

There were some expecting the finale to be Bauergeddon ... but I think that fan-service was delivered last week with the Darth Vader shoot-em-up in the tunnel and the unseen rampage in Novakovich's apartment.

I still expected one gratuitous kill -- for the road.

maybe he'll get that ant that crossed his path

Peter Kingsley started that trend of random white dude that has never been alluded to is the real villain, which was laughably repeated with the whole "Alan Wilson" is the bad guy behind EVERYTHING.

Arnold Vosloo is a good actor and did the best with what he had, but Marwan was basically just Rube Goldberg with all his convoluted plans upon plans upon plans and he kept escaping perimeter after perimeter. His endgame to fire one single nuke into LA was also a joke considering his secondary diversion plan with the remote controlled nuclear power plants would've done more damage throughout the United States.

I was glad Edgar died. Nothing tragic about that. Never should've been brought back as a regular to begin with. It was funny how they were watching CTU employees dying left and right, but only Edgar's death elicited a reaction from them.

Jack executing Chappelle was emotional, but completely undone by how contrived it was to get that moment. Somehow the bad guys discover that Chappelle is chasing a paper trail that might lead them to Saunders' daughter... so they demand that he be killed (and Palmer gives the okay?) because somehow that ensures that no one else can or will continue Chappelle's work?

Worst CTU director: Hastings, or Samwise. I can't forgive Samwise for losing his ID card.

Erin Driscoll. Has a psycho daughter who is CTU Medical's only patient and somehow she manages to kill herself without anyone seeing it.

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

Personally, I thought Hastings was one of the better directors of CTU. Yeah, he started out badly, but he learned quickly. AND he did have that nice, withering stare for Dana and Cole when they got back from their encounter with Dana's ex.

As I posted at 3 am, I think that was on purpose.

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

Right now... the world and nation is a better and safer place... Well, sorta. There mas a multi-national conspiracy to cover up the murder of the leader if a Middle-Eastern Nation that involved the heads of two major world powers and the former head of a world power who was already disgraced for dicking around in international security. WTF, politicians? What. The. Fuck? I choked-holded my one and only friend... I think she kind of liked it. Truth be told, I liked it too. Yeah, baby, let me hand-cuff you give me that angsty pout, yeah... Ahem. Anyway I'm on the run again. This time I've got a bullet wound to my shoulder, two different stab-wounds to my gut, one was hastedly sewn together by a politican. I'm on the run to get out of the country as soon as I can before a shit-storm hits me which means my only choice is Canada. Wait... what is it Fox news told me yesterday afternoon about Canada's healthcare.... Oh shit, I'm Jack Bauer and I'm going to have to wait six weeks to get a saline drip, some stiches and a full course of antibotics.

The previous took place between 12:00 AM on the day of the 2000 California Primary and 4:00PM fifteen years later.

Events occured by having fifteeen years pass over the course of nine years and, yes, America hasn't had a President get elected and then finish their term for almost that same amount of time.

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

I thought this was pretty great. I love Jack. Hate to see him go, but he went out well. I was seriously rooting for Suvarov to eat a bullet, followed by Logan, but triggering WWIII just wasn't Jack's style.

Still, with what did happen, the world just became a very dangerous place: the US is humiliated, vulnerable and uncertain, the IRK is unstable and isolated and the Russians just leap-frogged over Al Qaeda/the Taliban, North Korea and the Chinese (24-verse) as the world's biggest assholes. Cold War II just started.

Of note, a first for me on this show, I found myself not only sympathizing with the IRK's shitty situation, but supporting them against the US. I was totally ready for Season 9 with Jack hiding out in the IRK while they try to get out from under the bootheel of the increasingly insane Taylor Empire of Peace at Any Cost.

I think a 24 movie would be best served as a personal piece about Jack, on his own, or with limited aid from the handful of surviving regulars. He doesn't need to save the world anymore. Something in the vein of Redemption would be great.

(And Renee was the hottest and best match for Jack. Audrey was alright, but too whiny. I kind of like the idea of Jack getting sniped instead of Renee and her going all-out Badass Bauer for the last 8 episodes, culminating in the assassination of Logan and Suvarov. Hmmm....Alt-24-verse?)

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

Jack may be able to get asylum in the IRK from Dalia Hassan considering all he did to protect her and her family and the lengths he went to prove the cover-up that Russians were involved with the death of her husband... I'm sure him taking out most of the Russian diplomatic party, and killing almost single-handed everyone in NYC who was involved in the assassination of her husband are extra brownie points.

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

If anyone needs a Carlos Bernard fix, he'll be playing a detective on ABC's summer series Scoundrels, which like all the other non-Canadian-made shows that premiere on American network TV during the summer will most likely be one and done:
