Car insurance is just totally mad.

My car insurance was due. My present insurers, Churchill, who admittedly gave me a good deal last year (but I'm still waiting for my nodding dog :() doubled the premium ~ due to 'economic reasons' :wtf:
So I thought it would be easy to go on-line... Well, my friends it's not:klingon:

I went to all the comparison sites, I went to the ones with the lively ads, and I roamed around willy nilly ~ and ended up banging my head on the table. Was I a cook (licensed), a waitress ~ that put the premium up £30:eek:)
Finally I admitted defeat (I hate doing that :klingon:) and got Man to look for me.

Apparently it is cheaper for me to insure my very invaluable car, fully comprehensive and pay monthly than to buy a third party only insurance in one go. Why? How? It does not compute.
We were in fits of laughter when 'for a laugh' we'd change the cover from third party to fully comp with breakdown cover and it was cheaper. (We are easily amused)
I swear if I'd asked for George Clooney to come and carry me from the car in event of accident it would be even cheaper!

I seriously don't understand how it works. But after 2 hours of screaming at the sites, I've ended up paying less than last year :D

So how long do you hunt for bargains, and how much do you pay for car insurance?
I've got mine for £10.11 a month ~ I think that's a deal ;)

That's about $12.48 American, ccording to xe.com.

A month.

I believe mine is $55.00 a month, if I am paying every six months -- I forget if that's six months or yearly. Anyway, auto insurance is higher here in my state, even when you've got a good driving record.

I get my insurance (car and homeowners) through USAA. I've been very satisfied with it.

Prices are good - I pay about $560 a year for my car insurance.

When I lived in New Hampshire, it was about $400 a year. Now I'm back in Connecticut and it's like $500 a year. Could be less but I carry more under/uninsured coverage than is required. Working for a PI attorney made me paranoid.

I've been with GEICO for a couple years now. Used to go through AAA and it was something absurd like $1200 a year. I have a (very) used car that isn't even worth $1k. Madness. I'll probably stick with GEICO until I get a new car, then I'll shop around online. I love online comparison shopping because there is no talking to people involved... my parents still go through an agency though and let that guy comparison shop for them.

California state law requires that I pay car insurance and am fully insured in order to operate a motor vehicle here.

In Los Angeles, driving a 10-year-old car and being a single, 30-year-old male I have to pay upwards of $100 or so per month to Geico for car insurance.

What you pay a month is pretty meaningless unless we know your age and the kind of car you drive.

I get discounts by having all my insurance bundled, but it works out to about $55/month for the Mazda 3, $75/Month for the Pathfinder and $75/month as well for the 350Z because it's only on the road 7 months a year. So I pay about $2500 a year for car insurance for me and my wife.

If we didn't have a house with the same company it would be about 12% higher. I'm in my mid 30s.

I had to drop comprehensive after my car was totaled. My new, liability-only rate is a little less than $200 a year, so that's a little less than $16.67 a month.

Before that it was just under $220 every six months so $440 a year and $36.67 a month.

I pay something like $35 a month through AAA. My car is about fifteen years old and it's on the road a lot less now that I work from home.

My new car quote dropped through the door yesterday, now i did have a small bump last year, my fault trying to squeeze into a parking space that was slightly to small, so with that in mind i ripped open the new letter and bingo.....£1450...this was from my previous £280 a year...My car is 10 years old and although still in good working shape i would be lucky if its worth £500 now to be honest, i have been driving since 1993 never had accident and never claimed, and when i have one minor bump with somebody else my insurance company seems to think i have won the lottery.......so checked the Internet for a quote and what do you know, found one for £400 fully comp which was about just what i thought it would be after having to claim last year.

£1450....i thought the letter sounded funny when i heard it dropped through the door and hit the floor, but i had no idea just how funny it was going to be.

HA! You guys are all amateurs compared to NJ car insurance...its the most expensive in the USA. I don't have comprehensive insurance and it still costs me about $1250 for 2 cars for 6 months. The cars aren't new and my wife and I are both over 39.

Yeah, don't remind me. I pay $1600 a year for liability-only insurance and an 18-year-old car. Fucking New Jersey.

I can't even believe the OP was worried about spending $12.50 a month on it. That's like from another planet!

Who are you with that you get it so "cheap," anyway?

Damn, I'm with Geico, too. I have a great driving record, but I'm also 28. Maybe that's why they charge me so much. :(

Wow! No wonder Joe Biden took the train for all those years.

Car insurance is one of the biggest scams perpetrated in America...no one cares about safety, its all about how local and state governments require it, and then they co-operate with companies to scam people by over-charging for the least rationale possible through "official" channels. In NJ, they charge huge surcharges for infractions on top of high rates. That's how the insurance agents and government bureaucrats wind up driving around in their huge Hummers and brand new cars.

Edit: Mind you..I have NO points on my license although I have had in the past..

The issue of comprehensive v third party only relates to your own car. If your car is worth £500.00 and you have a £400.00 excess, your insurers will only ever have to pay out £100.00 if you write off your own car. Consequently, for cheaper cars there is often no practical difference between the policies.

Damage to other people is what costs - the repairs, personal injuries, hire charges, and lost earnings and that applies regardless of what kind of insurance cover you have.

Third party insurance might be more expensive because they assume that people driving in cars that are too cheap to insure comprehensively are more likely to cause accidents!

I know what you mean K.

I have a seven year old Golf, no points, 13 year no claims, live in an ok area and it costs me mid three hundreds a year. (Last year though Direct Line decided they wanted to double what they charged me so a quick change in insurer was the way to go).
