What do you think about the episode?

^No worries. It seemed like a fucking petty argument to be making in those terms. It was obvious what the intent of the scene was and seemed fairly obvious to me that she said biting, so I thought I'd double check.

More than any other petty argument I've seen on this site, I'm glad this one is over. It was always biting and I'm amazed this argument has sprouted up now, 6 weeks later. Was there the usual 'overbearingly loud' music in this scene?

But that's another thing that bothers me about Amy - she acts like she knows so much about him. "You never let anyone call you Sir" - how would she know that??

I caught that too. I honestly believe that was just a slight flaw in the dialogue from Moffat, as he might have written that story for Number Ten (which was The Doctor that didn't like to be called 'Sir'). Either that, or he was trying to point out the difference between 10 and 11 in that moment, and just let it slide with the omniscience of the audience, versus the characters.

Other than that? Maybe there are a ton of adventures between the episodes, and she got to know that about him?

It was biting, it was intended for humor, and it doesn't matter. "I kept fighting them" isn't a punchline and that line was most definitely the punchline of that conversation. If you really think it is the line though, feel free to go on believing.

Pffft. She kept fighting them. Perfectly obvious on my B&W Zenith with rabbit ears.

Um, it wasn't meant as a joke. It was meant to establish that she's mistrustful of authority as a result of the Doctor's disappearance.

I also heard biting. Watch her lips, they definitely look like they're making a "b".

The thing is, the lip and mouth movements a person makes when speaking are a function of accent, in addition to the language they're speaking. For example, if a Canadian from Ontario says "later" their tongue touches the ridge behind his teeth twice, one for the "l" and one for the "t" (which may sound more like a "d"). When Karen Gillan pronounces the word "later" using the accent she uses on Doctor Who (which I presume is her native Scottish accent) it sounds like her tongue touches the ridge behind her teeth only once (for the "l"), but then she replaces the "t" with a glottal stop (essentially the throat closes) resulting in a pronunciation closer to "lay'er" (where the apostrophe represents the glottal stop---think of the pause represented by the hyphen in the word "uh-oh!").

In certain accents, the "b" and "f" sound very similar (in fact, in some languages the sounds are indistinguishable) and the mouth movements to pronounce the letters are likewise similar. I'm not too familiar with Scottish English, but if "b" and "f" sound similar with a Scottish accent, it would explain why it looks like Amy is saying "biting" when she really means "fighting", or vice versa. I think a native Scot, or a person familiar with speaking to Scottish people, could tell with more certainty.

If anyone is wondering, I would not be crushed if it turns out she really did say "biting". Actually, it didn't even occur to me that she could possibly be saying anything other than "fighting" until I looked at the discussion on this board. But considering so many people think she said "biting", maybe that's really what she said. As Sci noted, only the script could tell us for sure.

Glad its not just me who has problems sometimes with the overloud music in Dr Who. It can make hearing the dialogue difficult.

Uhm, it was. Mostly for the audience, as written by the writers. As opposed to Amy saying it to the Doctor.

Sorry dude, but you're completely and utterly wrong. She said 'biting.'

Again, show me a script (or a statement from Moffat or Gillan) and I'll buy it. Until then, as Slugboy noted, the most reasonable thing anyone can say is that she could have meant either one. The line certainly functions either way.

With skullcandy headphones that cancel virtually all external sound, I'm gonna have to say biting, too.

This is one of the first episodes in a long-time that has made me laugh out loud. The bit where Rory says (about the Doctor); "He's Mr. Cool" and then it cuts to the Doctor stumbling awkwardly down the street has had me chuckling since Saturday...

This is getting quite hilarious now. It is so obviously biting, and biting makes much more sense.

And of course it was a joke, or if not a joke as someone said a punchline. As I recall the scene goes something like this...

"I had to see four psychiatrists..." pause while she looks all shifty. ‘I kept biting them.'

As opposed to...

"I had to see four psychiatrists..." pause while she looks all shifty. ‘I kept fighting them.'

Seriously which one of those two is less serious and more in tone with a romp for all the family? Which is more amusing (and the scene was supposed to be light hearted)

Hey Sci, remember when I made the point a few months back that you never ever admitted when you were wrong and you (of course) disagreed with me? ;)
