Star Trek one year on

It made over $400 million at the box office, so clearly it is.

JJ's film, by comparison, only made $257,730,019, according to boxofficemojo.com.

Does that mean Transformers 2 is a better film?

Star Trek - $385,494,555

Transformers 2 - $836,297,228

Actually Transformers 2 is at least twice as good as Star Trek based on the worldwide totals!

By the way... I found Transformers 2 the dumbest fucking movie I've ever had the privilege of paying for twice! Took my wife on opening night. Then was forced to sleep through it a second time when my son begged me to take him the following day.

Even after one year this is still my favorite Star Trek movie! I am a long time fan and began watching TOS as a boy of 10 in 1973 on reruns. I love all the Trek movies to some degree actually but this new movie really captured the sense of wonder and adventure that made me love the series all those years ago.

I have now watched the movie, on Blu-ray, 88 times. I still highly enjoy it, and I still wait anxiously for the next movie. It definitely does not feel like it has been a year.

It's still a mediocre, hollow shell of a movie that's fun on a big screen but leaves you feeling empty every time you watch it. And the story still sucks.

Not really. And who are you referring to when you say "You?" Perhaps you should say "me," as in yourself.
Dude, it was a total given that it was his opinion and was a genuine answer to the OP.

I guess we can should start putting IMO at the end of everything we say just in case it upsets you.
Eh, let's not - it would be silly. I think most people are quite capable of recognizing an opinion when they see one, and besides, there are far too many things already which come with mandatory labels attached, announcing the bleeding obvious.

It's one of my two favorite Star Trek movies, and the only one that really captures what was entertaining about the characters in the original tv episodes. The previous TOS-based films took themselves too seriously to be enjoyable in that respect.

I just re-watched my DVD for the first time since I got it for Xmas. First time I'm re-watching the movie since I saw it a year ago.

1. It's definitely my favorite Star Trek movie.

2. It's amazing how perfectly they did everything needed to resurrect Trek, from Nimoy's cameo, to recasting almost all the characters well, to the kick-ass action and visuals, to starting a new cosmos that wouldn't have the foregone-conclusion problem of the old, to the little fun nods to fandom - the redshirt buys it, the Vulcan nerve pinch, Sulu's fencing, Vasquez Rocks, etc.

3. They pack an astonishing amount of stuff into the movie. It just zips along at a dizzying pace, but is never confusing, or not terribly confusing.

4. I was so dazzled by Quinto's performance that I failed to adequately appreciate Chris Pine. No, he's nothing like Shatner's Kirk, really. But he's a fascinating character in his own right, immensely charismatic, and if I'd never seen one frame of TOS, I'd still be very interested in seeing more from that guy.

5. Nero is still a rather uninteresting villain and I'm still disappointed that the movie did nothing to add to our understanding of the Romulans, who after decades still remain largely cypher-like compared with Vulcans, Klingons and Cardassians. They haven't been given their own identity. Maybe the next movie can fix this, but I suspect it would have to wait for TV, however long that takes.

6. Karl Urban did a good job not turning McCoy's accent to cornpone but it's a bit too generic for my tastes. He should pump up the Georgia lilt for the next movie. Maybe a voice coach could help.

7. Uhura needs to be developed so that she isn't so serious and humorless. I know they wanted to re-imagine her as a more serious and competent Starfleet officer, but I don't want to see her end up as the only main character who's just no fun. Let's have some of Uhura's warmth and charm back in the mix, too.

8. What Kirk is missing (and can be added in the next movie): a sense of why he's in Starfleet. So far, he's a punk who's started to grow up by being in Starfleet, but he seems to be just in it for the adventure. TOS Kirk had a reason for being in Starfleet - he believed in Federation ideals and often struggled with them in his decision-making, made corny speeches that expressed this struggle, etc. (And a willingness to be corny is another aspect that needs to be returned to Kirk - Pine's Kirk is just a bit too cool.) This could be in the back of Kirk's mind as portrayed by Pine - there was hardly any time for that element to come to the forefront (except perhaps in his willingness to show mercy to Nero) - but without it, Kirk really isn't Kirk.

9. My favorite WTF moment: Pike decides to enlist Kirk in a vital mission because "you're not supposed to be here anyway." :rommie: Yes, it can be rationalized, Pike saw potential in Kirk yadda yadda. But why tell the guy, in effect, "I hope you don't come back, you waste of life support resources."

10. 2012 is TOO DAMN LONG TO HAVE TO WAIT! :klingon::klingon::klingon:

Yep.

What are your thoughts here's mine Happy Birthday Star Trek you are still my favourite film a year one so thanks JJ Abrams and the brilliant cast and crew.
Here's to hoping the next outing is better than the last! When I saw the first trailer I thought NOW THIS, IS GOING TO BE COOL! Then I got to the theater and the floor fell out from under me. (All in all, Star Trek has always had a history of coming up to speed slowly.) So here's to the next film, may she be a good one!

So a year later, the DVD-Bluray legacy is that it made another $150+ million in sales!! Raking in almost $550 MILLION in viewing grosses alone (not counting rights to FX Network--another $150 MILLION or merchandising...including a best seller novel version). Quite a staggering total!! ST09 was possibly the first single ST entity to gross a billion dollars on its own, and in one year.

RAMA
