You know what? This whole decision is pretty sloppy. I thought NBC was going to try avoiding this shit after the Conan debaucle?

I'm talking about the way Heroes ended... since it was said since the beginning that the whole of the series was mapped out, there is the sense that some sort of conclusion was either on paper or in Kring's mind or something.

The idea that a conclusion won't be produced is fairly short sighted, if you ask me. If there were a way to make a 1 or 2 hour wrap up that might have a semblance of wrapping things up... it's the least they can do for the fans who tuned in painfully for the past 3 years (no, not 4 because the 1st season wasn't painful to tune in to).

No. It's too damn sloppy, this decision. They have to tie this up with a special and I'll bet that NBC will do it.

I will miss Heroes they need to produce a special or movie to tie up all the loose ends and please air it over in the UK so that us UK Heroes fans can see it.

Didn't like the start of season 1 but stick with it due to other people's praise. Season 2 wasn't good. Season 3 wasn't that great either and started to get stupid but near the end it was getting better with Bryan Fuller doing things but he left and Season 4 was more of the same ole shit with the patheic attempt to attract viewers with lesiban storylines. If crack whore T'pol didn't work, why would this.

Heroes had it. It was the in thing, it was hip and cool. Not great but it has caught a good audience and tossed it all away.

This is nothing like the Conan thing, and I don't really know what you mean by "sloppy".

Heroes was not the ratings success like it once was. Clearly, NBC felt that the show was not pulling enough of a profit for the expense it was on the network. Therefore, they canceled the show.

Many networks have canned shows that were in the middle of their story. This is no different. They are not going to keep a show around just for the handful of viewers who still watch it. They might - might - produce a wrap up TV movie given the show's one-time extreme popularity, but even that would be a risky move by the network.

I think Kring said in an interview in the middle of season one that that he was intrigued by LOST and wanted to tackle a highly serialized drama and spent two years developing season one, the characters, the premise, mythology. He didn't have seasons passed that mapped out in detail but had a general idea how he wanted the series to evolve--1)namely rotating casts 2)a build towards the Disaster in Isaac's paintings and 3) by season 5 the 5 Year Gone world.

That would never work. When a show takes a three month break in the middle of the season (Lost, V, Flashforward) half the audience forgets the show exists when it comes back.

Which is why you need to make it an event, not just another season of TV

Heroes makes me wonder if the basic model behind American TV is broken. What they probably should do is follow a format closer to movies. Focus all their energy into making a season. Once that season is done take a break. Plan out the next season. If that means taking a year or two to develop this new season then so be it.

Here's the problem - that would cost more money than the current system. With the financial model for network TV (ad-supported) collapsing, they need to find ways to cut costs, not increase them.

SF/F genre shows on network TV is untenable as an ongoing thing. There are plenty of sf/f shows in the pilot season, but they are mainly "accessible" sf/f - with family and law enforcement elements - that mirror the mainstream trends towards family comedies and cop dramas. Nothing freaky like aliens, spaceships or zombies. The interesting stuff is far more likely to emerge on cable. On network TV, sf/f will become ever more bland, in a forelorn hope of hanging onto the mainstream audience.

What about the comics! Why won't anyone think of the comics!
Of the 172 comics released online, only 80 have been collected in hardcover volumes. Now that Heroes is cancelled will we ever see the publication of Heroes Vol. 3?

I'll bet they keep up with the comics. Very low production costs, I'm sure they can maintain themselves on even a fraction of the viewership. But that's not much of an attraction to me - once the writing went to shit, the sole attraction of Heroes was the actors.

What I mean is that NBC pissed off a lot of Conan fans. Heroes was pulling in 5 million viewers last season. It just surprises me, that's all. They got so much bad press over Conan I'm surprised they'd cut out something with a following of that size.

Personally I thought the show had finally come to a interesting place where the Heroes were "out of the closet" and generally known about to the general public. I liked that Claire had started to generate a reputation for herself as a mutant of sorts when she checked into Lesbian Collage.

That's a good question... Here's another: how many viewers who watched Heroes will watch "The Cape", a replacement that by it's own title suggests the same serialized superhero fiction?

I have a feeling that The Cape will get a modest try out and then a sharp drop-off. I don't think it will be much like Heroes. At best, it can be like Chuck, but the central dynamic is not a young nerdy guy who is trying to get the hot girl but a father trying to reconnect with his family.

Uh. Allow me to be cynical and suggest that the hot girl part is more of a ratings draw for the likely audience. Add that to the fact that Chuck lucked out with Zach Levi, who is a very compelling and watchable lead actor, and that the show has never been close to a hit - it's a wonder it's survived this long - and that doesn't bode well for imitiators.

Meanwhile, I kind of want to rewatch Season 1 of Heroes, but I feel like doing so would just make me angry.

I'm going to watch S3 instead. And not just to feel good that it's dead - there have been elements throughout the show's run that have been fun and worth watching. And now that I know which parts suck, I can use the fast forward button to good effect.
