@ Wamrue while I agree with you that Rory seems to be a rehash of Mickey and that he has the same relationship with the Doctor as Mickey did...but I disagree that he's not grown since we first met him. I thought this episode and "Vampires of Venice" were great Rory growth episodes. He's not afraid to stand up to the Doctor or voice his concerns about his relationship with Amy. Mickey kind of moaned and groaned but never called the Doctor out or confronted him. He sort of just took it and understood that Rose and him had started to drift apart. Rory KNOWS that Amy is in love with him and that the Doctor is kind of an un-full filled fantasy for her..."Amy's Choice" was basically all about this.

I think this might be my favorite episode of the season so far. However, was there a Star Trek or Farscape episode which kinda dealt with "everyone dreaming the same dream?" It did seem like I had seen this kind of thing before, even though it was a different take on it.

I really loved it for the character building it did. Rory is still continuing to shine, but I really liked Amy here. Still not convinced she is my favorite companion of the 4, but so far she Gillian is doing a great job and this was her episode to shine. Also, the idea of the Dream lord was an interesting one. Also, just so I keep up with the crack story, did we see it first thing when the viewscreen panned over to the planet? I'm talking about the star design. If anyone has a screencap, that looked like the shape of the crack to me.

Also, they don't distrust each other in this episode.

Which in a sense the acknowledges, and I liked that VERY much: "Are we disagreeing or competing?!" The former implies a form of distrust.

Yeah, I love Mickey and Ten to death, but I can't picture them bringing up that point.

Wow I might wel have to watch it again because my initial thoughs were that it was terrible, seriously I felt like Fear Her and finally been overtaken!

It had some nice ideas, but the script and direction...I dunno it just felt really, really flat.

Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood?
I was really looking forward to this episode. Unfortunately I agree with you.

One line from Amy ruined this entire episode for me. Her reply to the Doctor when Rory died and he said he couldn't save everyone: "Then what's the point of you?" You could see how much that hurt him. I mean, WTF?! Who does she think she is? If she thinks so little of him, maybe she should just go back to her dull life on Earth and marry Rory. I've been trying to like Amy, she hasn't exactly been growing on me, but this killed it. I hope he dumps them both home.

So... your finance dies in front of you, quite pointlessly, with the man you've grown to expect to try his best to save lives right there the whole time, and you don't expect her to lash out randomly?! She's not a robot. :borg:

Loved the episode, myself. Great exploration of the Doctor's dark side, and Smith was brilliant, IMO.

Yeah, I was going to make that point myself. If you'd just seen the person you love die and you're not hurt, and think it's weird to lash out at someone over it?

This was a great character episode, and does remind me of "Edge of Distruction" as was mentioned upthread. I especially liked mentioning the Doctor's inability to apologize, which put in mind the Doctor's rather non-apology to Barbara in "Edge..." Very fun character piece.

Is it me or are the references to Hartnel's years in the last couple of episodes; what with the library card, which seemed to read 76 Totter's Lane but I couldn't make it out for certain and the 1963 build date for the TARDIS, there seems a desire to really ground this season with elements of the first years.

I don't think it's an inability to apologize. I mean, hell, "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry" was practically the Doctor's catchphrase for the last few years.

It's an unwillingness to apologize to Amy for always being the one to leave her alone in the dark that the Dream Lord was commenting upon.

the doctor and Amy together might have destroyed the universe (or something equally bad.)and someone had to go back and stop it... The dream lord could be old Rory?

The Dream Lord was the Doctor but using Rory's fantasy and Amy's fantasy against them in order to make them admit things about themselves they haven't wanted to prior to now.

Oh, I know what they told me, and I know that they lie to me, and themselves (was the word Valeyard used once?) and I know that they misunderstand what is happening to themselves too. Just because the doctor had an answer to explain every thing that happened, it doesn't mean that it was the right answer...

You know that misdirection is a huge part of the storytelling in this program, so we're ninnies if we take what they offer us at face value.

Hard to give an accurate review yet as my enjoyment of the episode was directly impacted by my frustration at it only being available on iPlayer in HD, which meant it was out of sync for me most of the time and kept pausing. I'm hoping the regular version has popped up on iPlayer by now so i can actually watch it without swearing at my laptop.

Yeah, I had that problem. It was sorted out by 11pm, which is when I watched it. The downside being I was nearly dropping off.

So this Dream Lord character was the result of some wacky seeds The Doctor then chucked out the door? Or was that my own dream filling in the blanks?

I loved this episode and it's probably my favorite so far this season (which is saying something considering how much I loved "The Time of Angels"/"Flesh and Stone"). It was the right combination of thriller and character study complete with a dynamic villain. Amy and Rory's relationship is wonderful and I hope Rory sticks around as a companion for the rest of the season just like how I wish Mickey had stuck around even if he wasn't really involved with Rose anymore. Rory isn't quite as cool as Mickey but I think he's up to the challenge.

MUCH better than last week's thrown together "What's kewl with the kids these days? Oh I know.....VAMPIRES!!!!1" episode.

I was seriously worried because of some stinkers this series but this ep changed my mind.

More like THIS please!!!

lets hope this episode has some good writing, as I think its going to a cheap one, CGI wise, dont even know if its going to have any proper aliens.

Give me plenty more like this, rather than the pathetic vampires one, ANY day.

You DO know that a good story can be something mind-bending, rather than new "rubber head of the week" thing, right?

How old are you any way?!?

I really enjoyed this episode loved the character of the dream lord and think who ever the actor was who portrayed him did a good job. thought it was greatly paced and it kept me on my toes trying to guess which reality was real and which one was not also i didn't see it coming at the end were they both would be a dream land.

part of me was wondering by the end when the doctor said the dream lord is everything about me that is negative etc, that this maybe a reference to the Valyard who was a potential incarnation of the doctor who was angry and negative etc. I wonder if Moffat has plans in the future to use this character more i hope so or even the doctor to beginning to show a bit more of a darker edge to his character.
