Yeah remaster the acting & sets and get rid of Wesley Crusher. The affects of the Enterprise is not that bad still.

Since I'm not going to get a 3D set anytime soon, no hurry.

Now Hoshi dropping out of the air duct, topless and in 3D, that's a different story.

Total waste. The effects aren't that dated at all.

I'm no fan of 3D, but if it'll help convince them to remaster TNG from scratch, I'm all for it.

The effects of early TNG weren't bad per se, but they are let down by terribly lo-res video compositing.

Tosk nails it on the head. Most of the FX were very good, they just don't work well with new HD formats.

We're currently rewatching the series on DVD, and there's a lot of FX shots that have the potential to look good, but as noted the lo-res video compositing is what has done them a disservice. If they occasionally look a bit dodgy on DVD then the HD formats will definitely show any problems even worse.

Do we really watch for the special effects? I can't imagine how 3D would make an episode like "The Inner Light" any better.

I'd rather see them take the money and use it to tell some new stories, in whatever medium and in whichever timeline/universe they want to.

Only for the special effects? No. But they are part of the equation...and just as important as any of the other parts.

Is it wrong to want all aspects of the show to be equally good?

I agree...It annoyed me when I watched it BEFORE HD...you could sometimes see the low res lines through certain spaceships, and other fx. Has nothing to do with creativity..just tech.

Look, the 3D in Avatar was awesome but it was filmed in 3D there's no way they can convert TNG into 3D and make it look good on the budget they're going to have for a 20-year-old TV series getting a DVD-only release.

I'd much rather them invest in re-editing/cutting the episodes and redoing the SFX for a high-quality BD disc release.

Mind if I just chime in and say that this is a really retarded idea?

It will have to happen eventually.

As repeated repeatedly on this thread and others, TNG's special effects in space were done on video... and even at DVD quality look dodgy. On Blu-ray they would be certainly ratty and dogeared.

It's just an age/quality thing. The battle scenes from DS9's Way of the Warrior however look fantastic, and unbelievably they were done with actual models and not CG.

More than that, because the effects were done on video the episodes were edited on video. Whichmeans if any "HD" or higher-quality versions are ever to be made the entire episodes would have to be re-edited and cut together from the filmstock.

WOW! That's a lot of work. I can't imagine Paramount throwing that stuff away, though. It's got to exist somewhere.

If the bean counters can figure it will = equal profit than it will be done, you can count on it.

It'd be a lot of work and I suspect it could be done for a bit of profit but obviously not as much as they'd get if they didn't have to do it.

The quality of the film is something else entirely and depends on how well it's been stored and kept over the last 20 years or so. If it's beat-up to much even more work would have to be done to restore it.

Any "3D" however would just look shitty. It "can" be done but since it wasn't originally filmed in 3D there's a thick line between "looking good" and "looking like shit."

James Cameron wants to do Titanic and Terminator 2 in 3D and will likely sink a lot of money into pulling it off well, I've got faith in him for that.

But for a 20 year old TV series on a limited budget for a DVD release? It's going to look like someone playing colorforms on the lenses of your 3D glasses.

I'd be up for 3D Trek... if 3D TV didn't involve glasses.

How many years away is that?
