Fury Stupidity

As far as Tattoo, here's a solution from someone who is part Native American: How about we don't explore Chakotay's heritage at all? That way, they won't be any offences or mistakes. Besides, they never explored the culture of Sulu or Uhura or Riker or Bashir..... Why suddenly did those in charge feel the need to explore Native American culture when they never bothered with any other Earth based culture before?

Because we're *exotic*. :p

In other words, still easily exploited.

I can't understand why anyone would try to explain or defend that insulting, flawed piece of s**t that is "Fury".

Is any of your anger over this episode directed at Jennifer Lien? After all she agreed to take the part and it is said that she had input into the story.

A good question.

To be honest, I think that she should have refused to take part in that crap. She did let her fans down by participating in that horrible episodes and she lost a lot of points on my ratings list then.

On the other hand, she did persuade the nice and benevolent people in charge not to kill off the character, which was their original plan so she deserves some credit for that too.

Jennifer's input and the writing credit she got was for that change of the end of the story.

While this maybe harsh to say but if that's the case, then the fans need to learn to think beyond themselves.

Jen Lien was at a transitional period in her life at this point. She was attending school looking to go in a new direction with her career and looking to start a family. The money she earned from writing and starring in "Fury" was too her benefit as well as her new family & career. If her fans loved her, then they should be happy for her that something good came from an ep. they don't like IMO. It's not like Jen Lien became Lindsey Lohan.

Lien is no more at fault for being in "Fury" than Robert Beltran is for doing "Tattoo".

He's right.

Robert Beltran should be held at fault for all that is wrong with the Chakotay character because... well, just because.

Lien came back to a character she really liked and tried to do something with her that she thought her fans would appreciate. We should at least give her credit for trying to expand her characters boundaries and doing a fine acting job despite an extremely questionable script.

Exactly.

Or it could also be said that Lien is no more at fault for being in "Fury" than Ryan was for taking the role of Seven.

Well said.

However on the flipside, we also have to be realistic and concider that these actors don't always do things for our benefit. Not everything is about us. Acting is still a job and like any job, sometimes you tale work just to get a leg up on the bills. Getting to be back on TV for an actress that had been out of work for 2 or 3 years was big money for her.

No question about that. I'm pretty sure she was chomping at the bit for some income by that point.

I just give her props that she at least managed to have some creative input while bringing home some badly needed money.

I think what also cements this is that Jen Lien endures anxiety attacks because she's terrified of crowds just to do Cons. This should also tells us, she's doing it for allot more than just the fans.

You know, I always thought that was odd. I just assumed most all actors were attention crazy hams. So, to think that any of them would have anxiety attacks at having to be in front of live crowd has always thrown me.

Most of the actors I know prefer to blend into crowds, not stand out.

They're comfortable on stage when they're playing other people. When they have to be themselves, they're profoundly uncomfortable.

I've heard performs like Beyonce and Lucy Laweless say they've created a stage character that they pull out when they're in public to ease that discomfort.

I was going to mention Meryll Streep for the same reasons.

Hence the reason I thought it was odd Jennifer had those issues.

If it's common place to create a stage character, why didn't she do that? (Assuming she's not a ham like The Shatner ;) )

Maybe she's just not that good an actress?

I'll give her credit for three wonderful years of portraying the character Kes.

I also give her credit for persuading the benevolent, nice and caring people in charge not to kill off the character, as they were planning to do as a nice final gift to the fans of the character.

But I won't give her any credit for participating in that crappy episode in the first place.

Well, at least she didn't have to dress in "special clothes" to get attention.

As a matter of fact, she did prove her skills for three years of acting in Voyager and don't forget "American History X".

Ah, yes. When in doubt, dis Jeri. :guffaw:

Funny, though, the point is often made that people preferred Jeri in uniform, not in the "special clothes."

So it looks like she didn't *have* to dress in a catsuit to get attention.

Well, at least she didn't have to dress in "special clothes" to get attention.
Ummm, what are you talking about?

Kes' "pixie" outfits were custom made just for the character and then they put her in a custom made velvet catsuit when she got older. All that was done to make Kes' unique against the other cast members that just wore Starfleet uniforms. So Kes was made to look that way to get just as much attention.

Besides, it's not like it was Ryan's choice to what Seven wore.
Once again, you're blaming the actor for what the studio does.

The blue velvet outfit comes to mind for this.

..but this just means you yourself find Lien a questionable actress due to the scripts she chooses.

So I'm sure why you get upset when others say the same thing?
