Voyager ship design

Since Star Trek ship designs are an important part of how the series/movies are perceived. Do you think the series would have been better recieved had the suits gone with Berman's original model for the Voyager, in stead of the Lexus like version we got.

I may be missing something here, but why would this have made such a difference? I know next to nothing about ship specs and can only work out that the rejected model looked sleeker.

Edit: I prefer the ship used in the series and agree with Udat that the rejected model looks awkward.

I was also tickled that something actually moved on the ship. I get that it isn't really practical, but it was cool ;)

Consider that magnetic fields produce alternating currents of electricity when the field lines cross. The same could be true of the warp field as well, enablying these small engines to propell the intrepid to more than 3x faster than the Galaxy.

Intrepid also has field enhancers along the forward part of the Saucer (top and Bottom) and the sleek saucer itself is streamlined against temporal turbulence yet not so pointed that it weakens the forward bow field lines that protect the majority of the ship at warp.

Thanks for posting the pictures Saquist, being at work I was going to have to wait till I got home to do any posting. I was actually thinking of the model, as it kind of makes me think of something more navy-ish, kind of like a frigate or destroyer of present day navies. (I had not seen the sketches though, so thanks again!)

Comparatively, I prefer the version they wound up using. With respect to Mr. Sternbach, the original design seems, I don't know, too delicate, like it would be easy to snap in half.

It's also too long. There's a lot of detail, but not a lot of balance for my taste.

I really wished they had went with Sternbach's "super runabout" design. I liked the downward-turned, longer warp nacelles and the more angular overall lines. It was much more keeping in line with a small workhorse or auxiliary ship design, IMO, with an emphasis more on function than aesthetics.

No problem....my pleasure, sir.

The sketches are from Star Trek the Magazine.
The original design is a great starting point, yet I have to pick it apart.

The nacelles are based off the Oberth Class.
That tells me he was thinking science ship and not a combat vessel.

Thanks for this explanation. Seeing as science is involved it's little wonder that I was clueless. :)

The original Voyager design is more hard edge lines and we did get something similar in
Nova-class starship USS Equinox in 2376. (seen in VOY: "Equinox, Part II")
as well as noting
Rick Sternbach revealed how the Equinox was designed:
a sketch that I had done for the Deep Space Nine Tech Manual of the original design for the USS Defiant before...
The Equinox got the hammerhead shark flathead design that the original Voyager had IMHO.

It looks awkward?! Anyone else agree?
i do. would make a big difference if the nacelles were shorter and above the hull. never liked ships with spindly nacelles, in particular not the excelsior. looks like they could never abandon the old rocket design.

The only thing that could have made Voyager work was decent writing. I prefer the design they went with, its good that they kept the starfleet look but moved things on.
