Most ridiculous fashion trend?

While I wouldn't characterize this as the most ridiculous fashion trend (those have all pretty much been cited in the thread) this is one I find sort of annoying: girls who wear jeans under a skirt or dress--pick one! Do you really need that much layering?

It just ends up looking strange and redundant IMO.

They're just being proactive. People are evolving to be less and less hairy. Shaving your balls is like traveling to the future!

Yet it is the same people (the fashion concious) that deliberately put themselves in harms way to 'tan' -Wouldn't people of the future be a lot more indoors than we are even now - ie. with lighter skin tones?

The modern necktie is a vestigial form of the scarf or cravat which did have a function, namely to keep the cold winter air from blowing down your shirt. Today, it's merely a decorative accessory, like a pocket handkerchief. Does anyone really use a handkerchief for blowing their nose anymore?

I carry a handkerchief everyday, of course it's folded up in my pants pocket so it doesn't count as a fashion accessory. But the point remains I do occasionally use it on my nose (only for wiping not blowing) if I can't get my hands on something disposable. Most of the time I use it to clean my glasses.

Are you talking about tunics rather than straight up dresses? Or jeans that are more like leggings? I don't do it myself, but I think it can be a nice look. I wouldn't pull on a regular pair of jeans under a frilly dress or something, though.

For me never to have stubble, i would have to shave twice or per day.

Same. Plus, I hate shaving, so to be constantly clean-shaven would be an absolute pain in the ass.

Are you talking about tunics rather than straight up dresses? Or jeans that are more like leggings? I don't do it myself, but I think it can be a nice look. I wouldn't pull on a regular pair of jeans under a frilly dress or something, though.

Not leggings, but full out proper blue jeans with a real skirt or dress. Not a fancy dress like a wedding or prom dress, but like a sun dress or something else similarly casual. It's sort of a thing that was favoured by hippie-esque girls quite a bit a few years ago, but it has (thankfully IMO) fallen by the wayside. Maybe it's just some weird Toronto thing.

In terms of how something is defined in terms of popularity, guys, consider this: If you knew somebody who was cutting themselves on the stomach or genitals with a sharp metal object, how would you define that? Differently than somebody with naval or genital piercings, I'm guessing. If so, why?

One thing that springs to mind is that piercings don't actually hurt. If there is some discomfort, it's generally an unwanted side-effect. It's not the goal.

Personally, while I concede differences of opinion on the psychology behind it, I don't see it as detrimental.

To me, tatoos and piercings are declarations of ownership. These are things I chose to inscribe on myself which are distinct from genetic inheritance. The freckles on my skin I was born with, and are a family trait. They come from an on-going biological legacy. My tattoo and piercings are a conscious choice I made representing ideas that are important to me and, I suppose, reflecting the influence of a particular cultural moment. I enjoy the intersection.

Or I'm a pretentious fuck. One of those.

I think Pat Benatar and Olivia Newton-John were the only women who could really pull off the short-tunic-and-leggings look.

I wholeheartedly agree. I much prefer that part of a woman's body to be left au naturel -- or, as the young people say, a “full Seventies bush.” As if women didn't have hair down there before 1970.

If your bikini is so skimpy that you need to shave your pubes, get a bigger bikini.
