Films you can't stand...

We'll just have to agree that we disagree. I hate that fucking film with a passion that surprises even me sometimes.

Of course, I'm sure this won't be the last word...

Quoting myself to start off. Of course I was referring to a particular Trek movie, but the sentiment could be aplplied to any number of films that everyone else seemed to like except you.

And so now here's a chance for folks to vent about whatever films that just didn't work for you to whatever degree and for whatever reason.

This is a ranting thread so it's kind of pointless for fans and defenders of given films to get into arguments about why they feel the dissenters are wrong. Indeed it can be rather enlightening to read a critical perspective of a given film.

So now let 'er rip...

The Princess Bride - I just, FOR THE LIFE OF ME, DO NOT understand the slavish devotion to this film. It DID NOT work for me. It was too aware that it was giving a massive wink to the audience and just FAILED for me.

I actually have come to hate it.

Pitch Black, The Fast And The Furious (so bad even Tokyo Drift was better), Final Destination...

Independence Day. I slowly evolved from enjoying it a lot, to being all right with it, to mildly disliking it, to groaning everytime I even hear it mentioned.

Sunshine. Why don't people realise how awful it is? It tries to be hard science but gives up the moment they reveal the sun is on the blink... then the pilot just forgets how to fly the ship and break it.

it's a bad film.

Casino Royale. There's no action and he plays cards for 30 minutes (a game I didn't know the rules for and so had no idea what was going on). The Departed. You wait the entire movie for a confrontation that never happens, then there's the ridiculous ending where everybody gets shot right in the forehead over and over and over...

ET is probably the biggie. Everyone thinks it's a classic and everyone I've encountered loves it. I watched it once and it made me physically ill, for some reason. It's one film I have absolutely no interest in ever seeing again.

The only other film to do that to me was Warren Beatty's Dick Tracy. But I put that down to the effect of its color scheme more than anything else.

I can't stand the ending of A.I. (which many other people seem to love) but I like the movie up to a point (interestingly this is another Spielberg film).

I also can't stand Avatar (or indeed most other films) in 3-D. I have criticisms of Avatar's story as well, but I wouldn't put the film ITSELF into the "can't stand category". I just don't like the 3-D.

The entire catalog of Will Ferrell movies, except for The Producers. The rest need to be locked in a vault, never to be seen again.

Umm...I have never heard anyone express anything other than this opinion. It's pretty much the general consensus on the film.

I hate Tim Burton's stuff. All the gothy stripey black and whitey stuff.

And i thought i was the only one. The thing that really irritates me about Tim Burton is when he takes other IP's and then Burton-izes them into the same stupid annoying pseudo-gothic crap.

Other choices would be Stargate. The film took a brilliant premise then made it incredibly dull. The only thing that makes it even slightly tolerable is James Spader's acting.

And Avatar. Cameron spent 12 years on that? And if the film wasn't disappointing enough, the fact that its spawned a new 3D fad gives me further reason to dislike it.

Ever seen Stranger Than Fiction? It is a radical mistake to stay away from this very drily witty, magical realism delight because it has Will Ferrell in it. It's like nothing else he's done, he's marvelous in it, as are the other three principles - Dustin Hoffman, Maggie Gyllenhall and Emma Thompson. And if that cast doesn't convince you, I guess nothing will. I find Ferrell very hit or miss as a funny man, but this is one of my favorite comedies of all time.

And now, back to your regularly scheduled thread:

Terminator 2 (overblown, overhyped, under-original and turns the scary Terminator world into cheesy cyborg-dad land - ick!)
Return of the Jedi (all the promise of SW and ESB sacrificed on the altar of cuteness and - suddenly the story is acting like Vadar's the main character, wtf?)
Idiocracy (oy, the same joke over and over and over...)
300 (I turned the DVD off as soon as I could stop laughing at the ludicrous dialog long enough to work the remote)
