iPhone 4 (4G?) Phone Details and Pictures and Video "Leaked"

I would wait if I was you but if you can't wait only get the 3GS. Getting the 3G would be a huge waste of money and you will be frustrated when it docent support all the new features in iPhone OS 4.0.

OK, here's the $64,000 question -- I've decided to upgrade to an iPhone as I've once again been in a situation where it would have been nice to access my e-mail while conducting errands. Chatted with a co-worker yesterday who has the 3GS-16 but said the 3GS-32 would be better; however, the 4G is rumored to be coming out in June. So, would it matter if I went ahead and got an iPhone (definitely a 3GS and not a 3G) or should I wait until the 4 comes out to see how much prices drop?

I am already an AT&T customer with a Nokia phone. AT&T will upgrade me to the 3GS-16 for $199 plus 2-year commitment; the 3GS-32 for $299 plus 2-year commitment; or the 3G-8 for $99. I am currently leaning toward the 3GS-16 and wonder if prices will drop dramatically when the 4 is released. It's about a two month wait, so I'm thinking to tough it out and see. Thoughts?

Basically, I don't see anything in this new iPhone that pushes Apple ahead of the pack again. When the iPhone first came out, it was innovative and stylish. Now, it's gotten tired and stale and competitors (especially Android-based phones) are threatening to gobble up their market share.

Except for the first couple years of the iPhone/iTouch, when has Apple been the technology leader in a field? Even with the iPhone, every generation was dogged with complaints that it lacked basic features of most other phones of the time (3G, MMS, Cut/Paste, Multitasking). The answer is never, because features is not what Apple is selling. Hell, my 3 year old HTC Tilt had every feature the iPhone 3GS has. Apple sells ease of use. It's why iPods are not the most advanced PMP, why other tablets are more powerful than the iPad, and why the iPhone will never be the technology leader again. It's just not priority #1 for them.

So just what, out there, would you say rivals the iPhone? I'm not interested in the Droid, the reasons being are #1) Google can lick my bunghole, and #2) Many reviews I read stated that it wasn't near as powerful or had the features of the iPhone. I work with many anti-Apple people (we're programmers) and one here sings loudly his praises of the iPhone.

I think we all knew this was coming but the police finally executed a search warrant because of the whole debacle. My favorite part is the complaining of executing the search when he was not home. Umm, the police with a search warrant have the right to remove evidence weather your home or not, has he not watched Law and Order?

http://gizmodo.com/5524843/police-seize-jason-chens-computers
Last Friday night, California's Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team entered editor Jason Chen's home without him present, seizing four computers and two servers. They did so using a warrant by Judge of Superior Court of San Mateo. According to Gaby Darbyshire, COO of Gawker Media LLC, the search warrant to remove these computers was invalid under section 1524(g) of the California Penal Code.

Wait, let me get this straight. You want to know what, out there, rivals the iPhone in terms of functionality... then dismiss Android-based phones out of hand, as if they don't count?

You must have been reading some old reviews. Some of the early Android-based phones sucked pretty hard. The Nexus One, however, gets rave reviews, and is probably the best Android phone out there.

A key difference between Android and iPhone is that the iPhone is both a specific phone and a platform, so there is tight integration between the hardware and software. Android is just a platform, and manufacturers can vary the hardware to suit their target sales markets.

I must say, I find it odd that someone would hate Google but like Apple.

The Nexus One has now been outpaced by the HTC Incredible and Desire, though just by an edge... mostly it's due to some very slight hardware tweaks and HTC's refined SenseUI. I just pulled the trigger on a Nexus not 20 minutes ago, I can't wait to argue with Telus about data plans!

As to the whole leak thing... the state of California raided the offices of one of Gizmodo's editors and several computers were seized indicating that a criminal investigation is underway, though it's on hold until the DA can determine if California's shield laws to protect journalists also apply here. So can we put to bed the whole idea that this was an intentional leak now?

I decided not to answer the "bunghole post" post directly. You have to be living in either a vacuum or a dreamworld to think the iPhone is the apex of cellphone features. Its multitouch screen and easy UI was its breakthrough. Props to Apple for shoving a stale industry out of complacency. However, to believe it has other wise superior hardware is...a stretch to say the least.

Current gen phones, I'm saying right now, not in the future, have 8-10Mp cameras, 4" high resolution screens, 802.11n wireless, 22Mb compatible HSPA radios, FM transmitters and recievers (listen to FM radio or broadcast your MP3 collection to your car stereo) and 1+GHz CPU's powering multi-tasking operating systems. Oh, and some can play flash content on the web.

I have a N1, and have played with Sense UI, I don't see the appeal of the latter. It's an either/or proposition at this point. Now, if they would have stuck with the 720p recording that the Desire was originally listed with... then we'd have a unrivaled champion. Then again, the N1 was once listed with 720p recording as well.

<snip legalese>

Which makes this a good test of whether or not Gizmodo, who probably have more readers than most technology magazines, should be protected under such laws.

Obviously, this is for a judge to decide, but news websites should receive the same protection as any other news source.

In other words, aside from the Android, you can't come up with anything that is a viable alternative to the iPhone. :vulcan: If that's the case, then I'll happily get an iPhone, because unlike a lot of you out there, I don't feel the need to own the latest and greatest in technology. You're talking to a guy who drives a 13 year old pickup and a 40 year old Volkswagen :p

Then why even get an iPhone? There are cheaper smartphones out there that likely do everything you want. Blackberries, Palms, older model iPhones...

Palm is dying/dead. Can Crackberries and some of these other devices you allude to hold music libraries and such? I keep asking for examples but can't get a definitive, straight answer.

How big a library are we talking about? Just about any phone above the level of "crappy and free with contract" has a built-in music player. The main variable is the capacity of the phone (and how big an expansion card it can hold.)

How about this: I don't want a crappy phone that comes free with a contract. The last one I did that with was some piece of shit LG clam shell phone. That was the final straw, and I paid $100 outright for a Nokia that I can hear ringing with the windows down and the radio blaring in the truck. I can also hear it ring across the house and while working outside if I set it down and walk away. I was something I can integrate/dock with my truck radio system.

Basically, I want something that's not super old technology but isn't cutting edge as of a month ago. I don't mind riding behind the curve a bit; however, I'm to the point now where I want to be able to access my e-mail and possible access maps and all that when needed.

What carrier are you with? I will see what's available. I'll bet you don't even need a smartphone. Email, maps, and media players come standard with just about any decent phone nowadays. I'll try to pick out a well-reviewed one for you based on your carrier.

AT&T and thankyouverymuch, Robert. And for the record, I have no desire to change carriers. Funny how Verizon is poised to upgrade it's network to 4G soon and is doing better than AT&T. 10 years ago, the hatred and disgust for Verizon was long and wide. I've never had a problem with AT&T in over 15 years of service.

BTW - I'll need a phone that's compatible with International networks. I'm planning on much travel in the future.

Also, who is your email provider? If you need Exchange connectivity, options are limited--not all non-smartphones offer it. Gmail and some other free email providers are usually available on lower-end phones.

I think that anyone would admit that there are phones out their with better technology packed into the phone. i.e. Better cameras, better, storage, play Flash(if you need that) and a whole host of other things but what I think the iPhone has over them all is usability. For individual parts, yes the iPhone is not the best but as a whole it is. Yet, the iPhone is not for everyone. The advantage android/palm/blackberry has over Apple ios the sheer number of phones. So they can mix and match technology easier and still be profitable. Apple with the one iPhone, it's appeares to be lagging behind. When in fact this one phone is driving everyone else to keep up and try to surpass. So you can say Apple is doing very well with it's limited product.
