Who's getting the Avatar DVD?

The one thing I don't get is... how much love Dances with Wolves seems to get these days!

I've seen it once back when it first came out? Enjoyed it enough, but that was pretty much that.

But every Avatar hater seems to have that movie memorized or something!

(To the same point, I doubt half the people comparing the movie to Ferngully actually watched that movie. It's not THAT popular of a movie)

You know, maybe I'm biased, because I think it's a fantastic piece of cinema. And I don't want to be a victim of a confirmation bias, or anything...but on the internet, all I hear is how much it sucked. But everyone I know in real life, and new people I've met since the film came out...everyone loves it, thinks it's brilliant.

So am I looking for people who love it? Or is it the nattering nabob of negativity that is the internet once again rearing its ugly head?

While I just thought it was ok, like you many people who saw it if they liked it and many people I know from work came up to me and asked if I saw it. The funny thing is though, most of those people were either, not frequent movie goers and are behind the times when it concerns 3d effects and CGI in general or younger less experienced movie goers who just said the effects were great but little or no comment on story.

Not to say the film was horrible or anything T'Baio. If was an ok film for me. I didnt outright hate it. It may just have something to do with the fact maybe I have seen too many stories like this in my lifetime and its just same old same old for me. Special effects have no bearing on me if I like the movie or not, which seems to be one of the reasons many went to see it or one of the major reasons they liked it.

I didnt think it really offered anything new to the table in effects or 3d tech. Storwise was just meh to me.

I might end up buying the Blu-Ray and keeping it on Mute the whole time. As interesting as it was to see in 3-D, I have a feeling Blu-Ray is probably going to be the best way to watch it.

Do people think the Indians won in Dances with Wolves? This isn't some trifling detail. Also, the love story in Dances with Wolves is quite different. Even the age of the movie is being changed for polemical purposes. It was released in 1990, twice ten years ago. Seems to me the only real point of comparison with Avatar is that the protagonist goes native.

The story in Avatar is simple but strong. Disliking a story that portrays the military in a negative light isn't the same thing as being a weak story. It is the oppositie of a bland story.

Well, I went by Wal-Mart and there was a line! a line!!! to get the blu ray or DVD at midnight...I was the third one to get a copy.

And then I used the Fry's advert from the back of today's sports page to save five bucks.

Watchin' it now, courtesy of the blu ray player & my sixty inch flatscreen, and it looks awesome.

Not as good as it looked at the IMAX, but better than it looked at the 2D tech screenin' I was invited to...

:bolian:

No line here in The Netherlands, but I'm pretty sure it'll be a smash hit on DVD. It's still no. 3 in cinema's here. I was tempted to pick up a copy, since the BD+dvd set was only 17 euros (DVD only version is available for 11 euros!). But I managed to resist the temptation. Picture quality looked good though.

The notion that the film paints the military in a negative light is absurd in any case.

Indeed. Colonel Badass was the only interesting character in the movie.

Running out now to get it. Don't forget everyone to get the Rifftrax (should be on-line tonight/late afternoon.)

Dammit, if i have to update the PS3 again to play this thing....

About that...
Didn't Stephen Lang say that he might be back for the sequel? Something about "You think two arrows in the chest is going to stop me? As long as they have my DNA..." :techman:

Maybe because they weren't military? They were mercenary's, ex-marines. People like to say the implication is that they were all ex-marines, and therefore it still paints the military in a negative light. But even if they were, and even if one could prove they were all crazy asshats...it's still only the ones who signed up for that particular job. How big do you think the military is in this time period? What percentage of all marines, ex and otherwise, do you think these guys make up? That would be like observing a prison and saying all humanity is crazy.

Fast and Dirty, a quick review on the Avatar BD DVD.

Grade: D, generously a D+

As we all knew the DVD wouldn't have any special features on it. It litteraly has none. Not even the damn trailer. Hell, not even a digital copy.

Picture for the BD is awesome, sound is good through my TV speakers, but this BD is bullshit. Oh? And the BD release? Comes with a DVD version! Seriously. A whole other disc including a lesser version of the movie. How many DVDs came out 13 years ago included a VHS copy of the movie?

Oh well, the movie is on it which is sufficent enough it's just bullshit that such a relase could exsist in this day.

Some movies offer a duo-pack containing BD + DVD besides a DVD or BD only version, looks like you are forced to get the duo-pack if you want the BD version for Avatar...

I picked up my copy last night at midnight and my wife and I sat up last night watching it.

I really don't mind that it is a bare bone edition. I generally don't buy movies with a lot of special features anyway because I really don't watch them all that often. Sometimes I only watch the special features once and that's that. Id' rather just concentrate on the movie.

The movie? Well, I just love it!

I knew it was bare-bones but Christ not even the damn trailer?! And including the SD-DVD is just dumb. And even though I knew it that doesn't mean this release is worthy of any grade more than a D/D+. Really, it's just a shitty excuse for them to double-dip. (Something I will not do. This is the version they released first, this is the version I'm buying and that's it.)
