New Look Daleks Revealed

Interesting, though: the Peter Cushing Daleks swapped out the plunger for a claw. If I were doing a redesign, the first thing I'd do is replace the plunger. Maybe a radially symetrical metal hand thingy, like a starfish. Hell, you could even have the "fingers" webbed together with black rubber so it is reminiscent of a plunger without looking like the Dalek is on a mission to unclog a toilet.

I don't mind the new Daleks, myself, though I prefer the ones that were more like the originals--I feel much the same about the Ryan Church take on Matt Jeffries' E.

Frankly I don't see why they couldn't put all THREE attachments on there. It would make the Daleks look even more scary and freakish.

Yeah, that's basically my philosophy about all these kinds of changes (the new E, the new Superman suit, the new Daleks, etc). I may prefer the original versions, but that doesn't mean the new ones don't have a lot going for them too.

And plus it's just nice to see something new and different.

I can deal with most of the new design. But I'm sorry. I look at that side view and all I can think is that the builders got their measurements wrong.

Except for the jelly jar dome lights, I thought the RTD versions were pretty much the ultimate dalek design.

Just a thought but in Confidential it was mentioned that the new Daleks were taller so the eye stalks would be at eye level with Amy (as the RTD Daleks were made to be eye level with Rose) and since Amy had no eye to eye dialogue with the new Daleks in this episode then perhaps the Daleks will indeed be back for the finale.

^
I hope so. Eleventh and Amy are already by far my favourite Tardis team of the new show. Best since Seventh/Ace, and maybe even better still.

I quite liked 10 & Donna ( and 10 & Wilf ), but prior to that I have to go back to 4 & Romana II to find as good a pairing..

Maybe the reason for the hump and thingy-majig at the back is that a smaller dalek comes out or one of the spider daleks of the fanfic/art world.

There does appear to be a "hatch" in the back, or a connection of some sort. I wouldn't be surprised to see it plug into something in the future.

^^ Everyone is entitled to their own favorite companion. Although, ironically, I'm not sure who mine would be, there's been so many. I will say that I like, in general, how nuWho companions seem like more well developed characters than those from the classic series.

Yeah, the show as now conceived is one about the characters as partners - if not always equal in ability, equals in respect for one another.

They said that the old Daleks eye storks were at eye level with Rose and they now have a taller companion, nothing was said that it was designed to be at the eye level of Amy, although Matt Smith has said in interviews the Daleks eye storks are at his eye level.

Just rewatched Confidential (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xd0g9p_doctor-who-confidential-series-5-ep_shortfilms 47 secs in) and Production Designer Edward Thomas said "We initially designed the original Daleks for the new series to be the same eye height as Billie so that the eye stalk would be the same height as Billie on this we had a much taller assistant so the eye stalk could go up" hence you would expect that they would have scenes together and hence because they had no scenes together in VOTD then perhaps they will be back this year. My question then is if we get a 4 foot companion in the future will they redesign the Daleks into mini Daleks?
