Who's getting the Avatar DVD?

Avatar comes out on DVD and BluRay this Thursday (Earth Day,). It's my understanding that it'll be a pretty basic set with not much as far as re-edited in scenes or other special features and not in "adapted for everyone's TV 3D." I suspect a "special edition" version will come out within the next year featuring more special features and in 3D BluRay for those new 3D TVs that are out there.

So anyone picking it up? I just might, though a cheap version of it, possibly the BD version. If for nothing else but for the Rifftrax for it.

One of the radio stations in Pittsburgh had an interview with one of the producers on Friday when I was on my way home from work. The DJ asked about the DVD and he explained that it's a bare bones set that just has the film because they wanted the film to speak for itself with this release. He also said that a special edition will be available in November.

There is another thread on the Avatar DVD here that describes stuff...and yes the one that is coming out on Thursday is bare bones. I'm passing and waiting until November for the 'ultimate' edition to come out.

I might.... I still don't have a hi-def TV, therefore not a Blu-ray player.

Otherwise... Was this thread necessary? (I know, that's rich coming from a guy replying to it!) :D

For me, Avatar was an interesting theatrical experience (IMAX 3D), not a film of sufficient merit for me to want to rewatch at home... maybe in a decade when the 4K res, 3D home video version comes out in whatever succeeds Blu-ray.

I'm thinkin' about it...checkin' out prices for the blu ray, seems like Target has the best deal, ya get three dollars off the $19.99 sale price if ya buy AVATAR and one of six or seven other blu rays that are on sale together.

By itself, I'd say Fry's has the cheapest price, with $19.77...

...and Best Buy has the worst, highest, price at $22.99.

Same here, watching it in IMAX 3D was fun but I have no interest in watching it at home.

Nope.

Barely got through almost THREE HOURS of "Dances With Wolves In Space" in the cinema. Why the hell would I want to pay my hard earned money to watch this at home?

I'll just watch "Aliens" and the brilliant making of doco(again)from the quadrilogy pack, if I want to see a filmmaker in his prime.

I'm not. I enjoyed the film and would very much like to see it in HD, but I'm not buying any barebone releases in this day and age. This just screams double dip. We all know a super duper avatard edition will eventually be released. I'll wait for that one.

It was an alright movie. Defintiely not as great as some think it is. I dont buy many films on dvd. Just ones that really stand out.(LOTR) This one was nothing special.

If the fall set is *really* nice, lots of extra footage and real, meaty making-of material, then I'll probably put it on my wish list for the holidays. It was an enjoyable film in the theaters, and will probably be nice for an occasional viewing down the road, but not enough to buy the bare-bones version.

I really enjoyed the movie in the theater. It looked spectacular on the big screen, with gee whiz bang bang effects. Thing is, there is no story behind it. The movie was only good visually. I will likely never own a television large enough to recapture the experience, and don't feel the need to, either.

I think on a small screen, when the gee whiz special effects aren't there, the lack of an actual script is going to become glaringly obvious. I'd rather keep the memory.

Nope. It was a pretty weak movie once you move past the stunning visuals, and that'll happen much faster on my TV than in IMAX 3D. I really can't see myself sitting through a rewatch of it at home.

Yeah, I saw the movie twice (including once in Imax 3d) but for some reason I have very little interest in actually buying the dvd right now. There are other movies out on dvd(or that will be out soon) that Id rather save my money for.
